Calculate the extra electricity used by a PC streaming YouTube by multiplying its average power draw at the wall by the hours it runs, then dividing by 1,000. The result is kilowatt-hours (kWh), which are the same as electricity units. To estimate rupees, multiply those added units by the applicable marginal energy rate on your electricity bill, accounting for local slabs and other charges.
Calculate the PC’s extra electricity units
- Find its average power draw. A plug-in power meter can measure the PC at the wall during a representative streaming session. If you do not have a measurement, use a clearly labelled estimate; there is no established standard wattage for a general-purpose PC streaming YouTube. Do not use the power supply’s maximum rated output as though it were the PC’s actual consumption. Include a monitor, speakers or networking equipment only if they are not already included in the measurement.
- Multiply watts by operating hours. Divide the result by 1,000 to convert watt-hours to kWh, or units. The Department of Electricity, Government of Puducherry explains that one unit (kWh) means 1,000 watts of electrical energy consumed in one hour. Its consumer guide recommends estimating appliance use from wattage and actual operating time, then multiplying daily use by 30 or 31 for a monthly estimate. Read the Puducherry consumer guide.
- Apply the period you are billing for. For a month, multiply average watts by streaming hours per day and the actual number of days in your billing period, then divide by 1,000.
Formula: units (kWh) = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000. For a monthly estimate: average watts × streaming hours per day × days in the billing period ÷ 1,000.

Illustrative example
If a particular PC averages 200 W at the wall and streams for 8 hours each day over 30 days, the calculation is 200 × 8 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = 48 kWh, or 48 units. These are assumed inputs for arithmetic, not a measured PC, a typical wattage or a standard monthly usage figure.

Multiply the estimated extra units by the marginal energy rate that applies to your connection and consumption slab. The energy-charge increment is not necessarily the whole bill increase: check fixed charges, duties or taxes, subsidies, meter charges and any time-of-day terms separately.

No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
There is no single India-wide domestic price per unit. The Ministry of Power says retail tariffs are determined by the appropriate electricity regulatory commissions, and state governments may subsidize consumer classes. Your location, utility, domestic category and consumption slab therefore matter. The Central Electricity Authority’s March 2026 tariff compilation can serve as a national reference, but use the latest tariff order for your own connection rather than treating a national figure as your rate. See the Ministry of Power’s tariff policy information and CEA tariff and duty information.
Check time-of-day billing where applicable
A June 2023 Ministry of Power release described solar-hour tariffs as 10–20% below normal tariffs and peak-hour tariffs as 10–20% above them, with times set by state commissions. It also described applicability after smart-meter installation. Those figures describe the policy framework in that release, not a guaranteed current rate or schedule for every household. Check your bill or DISCOM tariff schedule for the current hours, rates and whether time-of-day billing applies to your connection. Read the June 2023 Ministry of Power release.

- Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
Use a local estimator if available
Some utilities offer appliance calculators. WBSEDCL’s estimator accepts wattage and hours for an approximate cost, but states that its result excludes fixed charges and meter rent. If you are outside West Bengal, first check whether your own DISCOM provides an equivalent tool. Open WBSEDCL’s consumer corner.
Check the estimate against your meter and bill
Compare the estimated PC units with the difference between successive meter readings and the units billed for the same period. The household meter includes every connected load, so it will not isolate the PC; other usage, billing periods and tariff changes can also affect the bill amount. Comparing units across periods is more useful than attributing the entire rupee change to streaming.

- Keep the billing context constant when comparing setups: measured average wall draw, streaming hours, included peripherals, tariff slab and any time-of-day window.
- If you estimated from a PC’s stated or assumed wattage, treat the result as an approximation. A representative wall measurement or an energy-meter reading over a session gives you a more directly observed input.
- Do not count equipment twice: if the meter measures a PC and monitor together, do not add the monitor’s draw separately.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the purpose of the PC is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
