How to Calculate Your Household Income Percentile by State

To estimate your household’s income percentile in a state, compare your household income with that state’s published income-distribution thresholds for the same year. The American Community Survey (ACS) is the closest match for the usual question about how a household compares with other households. If your income falls between two published thresholds, interpolation can provide an estimate—not an exact Census rank.

Choose the right income measure and data year

First decide what “income” means for your comparison. For the ordinary question—how a household compares with households in its state—use ACS household-income data. Do not substitute an individual’s earnings or adjusted gross income (AGI) from a tax return; those measure different populations and concepts.

Keep the state, reference year, and dollar basis together. The Census Bureau’s 2024 ACS one-year Subject Table S1901 reports income in 2024 inflation-adjusted dollars and includes median and mean household income and distribution categories. Confirm the release and definitions for the state-specific distribution cut points you use; a median or mean alone cannot locate an income elsewhere in the distribution.

The ACS offers one-year state estimates as well as five-year pooled estimates for geographies including census tracts and block groups. These series describe different time periods, so choose one and identify it rather than mixing them. The Census Bureau explains the available geographies and estimates in its income FAQ.

Calculate an approximate percentile

  1. Set the comparison. Choose the state, ACS release, reference period, and household-income definition. Use the same dollar basis throughout.
  2. Find the state’s cut points. Locate the two published income thresholds that bracket your household income. Use thresholds for that state and distribution—not a national curve or another state’s data.
  3. Interpolate if needed. If your income lies between the lower and upper thresholds, estimate its position with this formula:
Estimated percentile = lower percentile + ((household income − lower income threshold) ÷ (upper income threshold − lower income threshold)) × (upper percentile − lower percentile).
  4. Label the result. Report it as an estimate, naming the state, data year, dollar basis, and source. If your income is above a top-coded published threshold, say it is above that cutoff rather than assigning a more precise rank.

Linear interpolation assumes incomes are spread evenly between the two cut points. The third-party Beforeview methodology explanation describes this approach and cautions that the resulting rank may be off by a few percentile points; it also notes the limitation at the top-coded boundary. Treat the calculation as an approximation, not an official individual ranking.

Example with your own thresholds

Suppose your selected state’s published thresholds place your income between two percentile cut points. Insert those two incomes and their associated percentiles into the formula. The result estimates where your household falls within that bracket; it does not turn the state median into a full distribution or establish an exact rank. Use the actual thresholds from the same release you selected rather than illustrative or mismatched values.

Know what the percentile does—and does not—tell you

A state percentile is a relative position within that state’s household-income distribution. A national percentile answers a different question. The median is the 50th-percentile point, but knowing the median alone does not reveal your rank at an income above or below it.

The Census Bureau’s 2023 state and metropolitan-area report compares ACS median household income and Gini measures. Those figures help describe state income levels and inequality, but neither summary by itself identifies a household’s percentile at an arbitrary income.

When another dataset may be the better fit

Dataset What it measures When to use it
ACS household income Household income, with state one-year estimates and pooled five-year estimates for smaller geographies Use for the usual comparison of a household with households in its state. Identify the release and whether it is one-year or five-year.
IRS state AGI percentiles Adjusted gross income on individual income-tax returns Use when the question is about tax-return AGI, not household income. These ranks are not interchangeable with ACS household percentiles. IRS state AGI percentile data.
BEA personal-income distributions Prototype distributions of personal and disposable personal income by household Use for that distinct economic-income concept, explaining the measure and methodology rather than presenting it as ACS household income. BEA says its state prototype was updated in July 2026, added 2024, and revised 2012–2023. BEA distribution of personal income.

Whichever series you choose, a useful comparison makes clear the income concept, reference period and release, geography, dollar basis, and whether the rank comes directly from a published cut point or from interpolation. These details determine what the percentile means.
