How to Calculate Your Bitcoin Break-Even Price After Fees

Your Bitcoin break-even sell price is the price at which the money you receive after selling fees equals the amount you spent to buy. To calculate it accurately, account for fees on both the purchase and sale—and use the actual amount paid and Bitcoin credited if your exchange handles fees differently than the basic formula assumes.

Use the fee-adjusted break-even formula

For a spot purchase where the buy fee is deducted from the cash budget and the sell fee is charged as a percentage of sale proceeds:

Break-even sell price = total cash outlay ÷ [BTC acquired × (1 − sell fee rate)]

If the full cash budget is the total outlay, the buy fee reduces the quote currency available to buy Bitcoin, and there are no other costs, the formula simplifies to:

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Break-even sell price = buy price ÷ [(1 − buy fee rate) × (1 − sell fee rate)]

Enter fee rates as decimals in the formula: for example, 0.1% is 0.001. The simplified version assumes percentage fees on both legs and a buy-fee convention where the fee comes out of the cash budget. It is not universal to every exchange or order.

Calculate it using your actual trade amounts

If the fee is charged on top of the order, taken from the Bitcoin you receive, or handled in another token, use the general formula with your actual outlay and BTC credited rather than the simplified version. This approach also accommodates a spread or other execution difference if you use the actual fill values rather than a displayed spot price.

  1. Find your total cash outlay. Include the money actually spent to acquire the Bitcoin and any costs you want the trade to recover.
  2. Find the Bitcoin you actually hold from the purchase. Use the executed amount credited to your account after any fee deducted in BTC.
  3. Use the sell fee that applies to your sale. Express a percentage fee as a decimal.
  4. Divide the cash outlay by the sale-fee-adjusted BTC amount: total cash outlay ÷ [BTC held × (1 − sell fee rate)].

For example, suppose you spend $1,000 to buy Bitcoin, receive 0.02 BTC after the purchase fee, and expect a 0.1% sell fee. Your break-even sell price is $1,000 ÷ [0.02 × (1 − 0.001)], or about $50,050.05 per BTC. This example uses an illustrative fee rate, not a universal exchange rate.

As a cross-check, calculate net sale proceeds as BTC held × sell price × (1 − sell fee rate). At break-even, that amount equals the cash outlay you chose to recover. If you also want to recover a withdrawal, transfer, or other cost, include it in that outlay.

Use the fee rates and execution values that apply to you

Your fee can depend on the exchange, whether your order is maker or taker, your account’s trading-volume tier, and whether you pay fees using the exchange’s own token. A market order generally uses the taker rate. A limit order receives maker treatment only if it adds liquidity and is filled as a maker order. Check the current fee schedule and order preview; do not assume a universal rate or discount. CoinMarketFees’ Bitcoin calculator identifies these variables and frames break-even as recovering the amount paid after fees.

A displayed spot price may not match your executed price because of spread or slippage. Use the preview and final fill amounts when available; the formula only reflects costs represented in the values you enter.

Trading break-even is not tax break-even

This calculation answers a cash-flow question: what sell price returns the amount you spent after the sale fee? It does not determine whether a sale has a taxable gain or loss. For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS describes gain or loss on a digital-asset sale as the difference between adjusted basis and amount realized. Purchased digital-asset basis includes purchase cost and qualifying acquisition fees, while amount realized is reduced by digital-asset transaction costs allocable to a disposition. The applicable treatment can depend on the transaction and the taxpayer’s facts. See the IRS digital-asset FAQs and the final regulations published in Internal Revenue Bulletin 2024-31.

Consequently, reaching your trading break-even price does not by itself establish that you have no taxable gain. Tax calculations depend on your lots, adjusted basis, transaction type, and applicable rules. The cited IRS guidance concerns U.S. federal tax; it does not establish tax treatment in other countries.

Keep records of acquisition dates, units, proceeds, costs, and fees if you need to calculate basis or report transactions. The IRS FAQ discusses identifying particular units and recordkeeping in specified contexts. Bitcoin.Tax’s July 14, 2026 support article describes using an exchange-reported trade price and time when available, or a time-specific exchange price in certain cases; that is the provider’s explanation of its approach, not an independent evaluation.
