The amount shown in Steamworks is not the same as the money Valve pays, and a Steam payment is not the same as studio profit. Start with the relevant gross-sales report, subtract Steam’s applicable adjustments, apply the revenue-share percentage in your Steam terms, and account for any withholding. Only then subtract expenses recorded by your business and calculate your own income or company taxes. Because contracts, sales geography, tax residency, entity structure, refunds, and costs differ, there is no universal “Steam take-home percentage.”
What “earnings” means in a Steam calculation
A useful worksheet keeps four amounts separate:
- Gross Revenues: the sales figure before Steam’s applicable adjustments.
- Net Revenues: Gross Revenues less Applicable Adjustments. Steam identifies taxes, returns and chargebacks among those adjustments.
- Steam payment: Net Revenues multiplied by the revenue-share percentage in the partner’s applicable Steam terms, then reduced by applicable withholding taxes.
- Developer profit and retained amount: the payment less business expenses, followed by the personal or company taxes that apply to the developer.
These are different accounting questions. A sales dashboard can show strong gross sales while refunds, customer taxes, withholding, payroll and other costs leave considerably less available to the studio or its owners.

Use the right Steam report
Sales & Activations Reports are an early sales signal
Steam’s near-real-time Sales & Activations Reports provide revenue, units, player counts, geographic breakdowns and related product statistics. Their displayed revenue does not include deductions such as refunds, chargebacks and taxes. Treat that view as a current sales indicator, not as the amount you should expect in a payment.
The monthly Steam Sales Report is the settlement report
For a payment calculation, reconcile the same period to the monthly Steam Sales Report. It shows Gross Revenues less Applicable Adjustments to produce Net Revenues, then applies the contractual revenue-share percentage to calculate the payment. Use the report’s period, product and currency details consistently; mixing a live dashboard period with a completed monthly statement can make an otherwise correct calculation appear wrong.

Keep a copy of each monthly report with your bookkeeping. If your internal sales tracker differs from the monthly statement, investigate refunds, chargebacks, tax treatment, timing and the selected date range before changing your expense or tax figures.
The platform-to-profit waterfall
Steam’s calculation can be represented as a sequence rather than a single percentage:
Net Revenues = Gross Revenues − Applicable Adjustments
Steam amount before withholding = Net Revenues × contractual revenue-share percentage
Steam payment received = Steam amount before withholding − applicable withholding taxes
Estimated profit before developer-side taxes = Steam payment received − developer-paid business expenses
Estimated retained amount = estimated profit before developer-side taxes − applicable personal or company taxes
The first three lines use Steam’s reporting and the partner’s agreement. The last two lines require your own accounting and tax records. Do not put payroll, contractors, software, marketing or localization into “Applicable Adjustments” unless Steam’s report explicitly lists such a deduction; those are normally expenses of the business, not platform deductions.

1. Define the period and product
Write down the product, sales period, currency and report used. Decide whether you are measuring a calendar month, a release-to-date period or another internal interval. A payment statement may cover a different period from a near-real-time dashboard, so the date range must be visible on your worksheet.
2. Record Gross Revenues
Enter the Gross Revenues shown on the applicable monthly Steam Sales Report. If you begin with Sales & Activations Reports, mark the figure as provisional and replace or reconcile it with the monthly report when available.
3. Identify every Applicable Adjustment
Record the adjustments shown by Steam rather than applying a guessed percentage. Steam’s documentation names taxes, returns and chargebacks as examples. Refunds can occur after the original purchase, and chargebacks can arrive through payment disputes, so the final monthly amount may be lower than an earlier dashboard snapshot.
4. Calculate Net Revenues
Subtract the reported Applicable Adjustments from Gross Revenues. Check that the result agrees with the Net Revenues line on the monthly statement. If it does not, look for a report-period mismatch, a currency conversion or an omitted adjustment line.

5. Apply your contractual revenue share
Use the revenue-share percentage in your signed Steam Distribution Agreement and partner reporting. Valve’s stated sequence is to multiply Net Revenues by that percentage. Do not substitute a percentage copied from a forum, an old article or another partner’s deal: the applicable terms and product arrangements control your calculation.
6. Subtract applicable withholding
Check the withholding line for the partner and payment period. Withholding is an amount retained for tax purposes before payment; it is not automatically your final income-tax bill. Preserve any withholding documentation because your accountant may need it when determining credits, treaty treatment or the business’s tax return.

7. Post the payment to your business records
Match the net bank receipt to the Steam statement. If the statement is issued in one currency and the bank settles in another, retain the statement value, settlement value and exchange-rate treatment used in your books. Do not silently replace the contractual amount with the bank deposit when reconciling revenue.
8. Subtract documented business expenses
Use your ledger, not Steam’s dashboard, for costs paid by the studio. Possible categories include employee or owner compensation, contractors, software subscriptions, marketing, localization and general overhead. Whether an item is deductible, capitalized or treated as owner compensation depends on your accounting method and jurisdiction.

Apply the rules for your location, legal entity, residency, tax status and filing period. A sole proprietor, corporation, partnership and individual owner can produce different results even with the same Steam payment. A qualified tax professional can determine the treatment of withholding, deductible costs, payroll taxes, estimated payments and any applicable treaty relief.
How to read the statement before entering numbers
Begin by checking the report header and not just the largest currency figure. Confirm the product or app, the covered month, the reporting currency and whether the document is a monthly Steam Sales Report or a Sales & Activations view. Save the original file or a dated export so you can explain later which version supported a journal entry.
Next, transcribe each adjustment as its own line. A single “deduction” percentage hides important information: a refund-heavy launch behaves differently from a month with mostly customer-tax adjustments, and a chargeback may be recorded after the sale that caused it. Keeping separate labels makes it easier to compare months and investigate an unexpected change in Net Revenues.
Finally, compare the statement’s calculated payment with the amount before withholding and with the bank receipt. The bank amount should not replace the statement amount in your revenue records. It is the cash result after withholding and any currency conversion. Record both values, the date each was recognized, and the explanation for any difference.

Timing and cash-flow checks
Sales dashboards update close to real time, while a monthly statement reflects the reporting period used for the payment calculation. That timing difference matters when a promotion crosses the end of a month or when a refund is processed after the original sale. For management forecasts, label dashboard figures as estimates. For accounting and tax entries, use the finalized statement and your documented accounting policy.
Cash planning should also distinguish earned revenue from money available to spend. A payment may arrive after the sales activity that generated it, and a portion may be withheld. Keep a reserve for expenses and developer-side taxes instead of treating the entire bank deposit as distributable owner income. The appropriate reserve depends on your jurisdiction and entity, so have an adviser set the policy.
Taxes that are often confused
Customer transaction taxes
Steam’s tax FAQ says it collects VAT, GST and JCT in listed jurisdictions and remits the amounts to the appropriate tax authorities. Treatment differs by market: in the United States and some Canadian jurisdictions, sales tax is additive at checkout, while Steam lists VAT-inclusive markets where tax is included in the displayed price. Rates and covered jurisdictions can change, so use Steam’s current tax FAQ and tax-rates page rather than copying a static rate table into a spreadsheet.

Applicable withholding is taken from the amount otherwise payable to the partner. Its rate can depend on information supplied by the partner, residence, entity type, treaty claims and the payer’s requirements. Record the gross amount before withholding and the amount withheld; recording only the bank deposit can understate revenue and obscure a potential tax credit.
Your own income, corporate and payroll taxes
After business expenses, the remaining profit may be subject to company tax, personal income tax, payroll taxes or distributions rules. The correct calculation depends on local law and your records. Steam’s platform documentation does not establish a universal after-tax percentage and should not be used as jurisdiction-specific tax advice.
Illustrative scenarios (not typical results)
The following examples show how the same gross sales can produce different retained amounts. They are deliberately labeled assumptions: the revenue-share and tax rates are not presented as standard Steam terms, and the expense figures are invented worksheet inputs.
| Item | Scenario A: lower adjustments and costs | Scenario B: higher adjustments and costs |
|---|---|---|
| Gross Revenues | $100,000 | $100,000 |
| Refunds, chargebacks and customer-tax adjustments (assumed) | $15,000 | $25,000 |
| Net Revenues | $85,000 | $75,000 |
| Illustrative contractual revenue share | 70% | 75% |
| Amount before withholding | $59,500 | $56,250 |
| Illustrative withholding | 10% ($5,950) | 0% ($0) |
| Steam payment received | $53,550 | $56,250 |
| Developer-paid business expenses (assumed) | $30,000 | $45,000 |
| Profit before developer-side taxes | $23,550 | $11,250 |
| Illustrative developer-side tax | 25% ($5,887.50) | 20% ($2,250) |
| Amount retained after the illustrative tax | $17,662.50 | $9,000 |
Scenario A retains more despite its assumed 10% withholding because it has fewer adjustments and lower studio costs. Scenario B receives a larger payment than Scenario A, yet its higher operating expenses leave a smaller amount after the illustrative tax. In a real worksheet, replace every assumed figure with the monthly statement, signed terms, bank records and books.
When comparing two products, hold the comparison axes constant: gross sales, adjustments, contractual share, withholding, expenses and local tax assumptions. State the sales geography and tax residency behind each scenario. Otherwise, a difference that looks like platform performance may actually be a difference in refunds, customer-tax mix or business structure.
How much does Steam take?
There is no single answer that applies to every developer. Steam’s documented sequence starts with Gross Revenues, removes Applicable Adjustments, and multiplies the resulting Net Revenues by the revenue-share percentage. Your agreement and partner report determine that percentage. The apparent “cut” can therefore change with customer-tax treatment, refunds, chargebacks, the contractual share, withholding and the period being measured.
Quoting a fixed percentage without naming the partner’s terms can mislead a developer in two ways: it may apply the wrong share to Net Revenues, and it may imply that platform deductions include the studio’s own expenses. Keep those categories separate in both forecasts and published revenue figures.
Steam Direct fee recoupment is a separate cash-flow item
Steam says the Steam Direct fee can be recouped in a later payment after a product reaches $1,000.00 in Adjusted Gross Revenue from Steam Store or in-app purchases. This threshold concerns recoupment of the submission fee; it is not a recurring revenue-share rate and should not be subtracted as a percentage from every sale. Track it as a separate line so a launch forecast does not confuse a one-time recovery condition with ongoing platform economics.

Optional reporting automation
Valve has announced a Sales Data API for retrieving revenue and unit data programmatically. It can help a team feed a dashboard or accounting workflow, but it is not required for the manual calculation. Protect API keys as credentials; do not commit them to source control, publish them in a client application or share them in support tickets. Automation should still reconcile to the monthly Steam Sales Report before you finalize a payment or tax entry.

Using the live dashboard as cash received
Symptom: the forecast equals the near-real-time revenue number but the bank payment is lower. Fix: replace the provisional figure with the monthly report and account for refunds, chargebacks and taxes.
Applying the share to Gross Revenues
Symptom: the worksheet multiplies the top-line sales figure directly by a remembered percentage. Fix: calculate Net Revenues first, then apply the percentage in your own Steam terms.
Calling withholding the final tax bill
Symptom: the amount withheld is treated as the exact personal or company tax due. Fix: record withholding separately and have your adviser determine how it is credited or reported.

Subtracting studio costs inside Steam’s adjustment line
Symptom: payroll, contractor invoices or marketing are entered as Applicable Adjustments. Fix: leave Steam’s adjustment lines tied to the monthly statement and deduct business costs later from your own books.
Comparing different periods or currencies
Symptom: the report, bank receipt and sales tracker cannot be reconciled. Fix: label each period and currency, retain the original statement values and document the exchange-rate method used in your accounts.
Assuming another developer’s terms apply
Symptom: a public percentage is used without checking the partner agreement. Fix: verify the signed Steam Distribution Agreement and the revenue-share and withholding lines in your partner report.
A practical worksheet layout
Set up one row per product and reporting month. Keep source values and your calculations visibly separate:
- Product, report month, report currency and date downloaded.
- Gross Revenues from the monthly Steam Sales Report.
- Each Applicable Adjustment listed by the statement.
- Net Revenues and a check that they equal Gross Revenues less those adjustments.
- Contractual revenue-share percentage and the resulting pre-withholding amount.
- Applicable withholding, supporting documentation and net bank receipt.
- Business expenses by ledger category, with the accounting treatment used.
- Developer-side tax provision, payment or credit treatment determined with professional advice.
For forecasting, add an assumptions column and mark every estimated adjustment, share, withholding rate, expense and tax rate. For tax filing, replace assumptions with statements and accounting records. This separation lets you revise a forecast without rewriting historical entries.

A review checklist before you publish or file figures
Ask five questions before treating a result as final:
- Does the period on the statement match the period in the ledger and the comparison you are making?
- Did you use Net Revenues, rather than the unreconciled dashboard total, as the base for the contractual share?
- Can every adjustment, withholding amount and currency conversion be traced to a statement or supporting record?
- Are studio expenses shown after the Steam payment, with their accounting treatment documented?
- Have personal or company taxes been calculated under the correct entity, residence and filing rules?
If an answer is no, label the number as a forecast or estimate. A transparent estimate is more useful than a precise-looking percentage whose inputs cannot be verified.
What you can safely conclude from the result
A completed worksheet can tell you how a particular product and period moved from Steam-reported gross sales to a payment, then from that payment to an estimated business profit and retained amount. It cannot establish an average Steam developer income or promise that another game will produce the same percentage. The reliable answer is therefore a documented waterfall tied to your monthly report, your contractual terms, your bookkeeping and the tax rules that apply to you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Steam take from game sales?
There is no universal take-home percentage. Steam starts with Gross Revenues, subtracts Applicable Adjustments to reach Net Revenues, applies the revenue-share percentage in your Steam terms, and then deducts applicable withholding before payment.
Can I use the Sales & Activations Reports number as my payout?
Use it as a near-real-time sales signal only. That view excludes deductions such as refunds, chargebacks and taxes. Reconcile it to the monthly Steam Sales Report for a payment calculation.
Are VAT, GST or sales tax the same as my income tax?
No. Steam may collect and remit customer transaction taxes in listed jurisdictions. Your company, personal and payroll taxes apply separately to the business results and depend on your location and entity structure.
Why is my bank deposit lower than the amount in the statement?
Applicable withholding and currency conversion can reduce the cash received. Record the statement amount before withholding, the withholding documentation and the actual bank settlement separately.
Is the Steam Direct fee a percentage of every sale?
No. Steam says the fee can be recouped in a later payment after the product reaches $1,000.00 in Adjusted Gross Revenue from Steam Store or in-app purchases. Track that condition separately from revenue share.
Can I deduct payroll, contractors or marketing from Steam’s Net Revenues?
Those are normally developer-paid business expenses, not Steam Applicable Adjustments. Subtract them after the Steam payment using your ledger and the accounting rules that apply to your business.
The Bottom Line
To estimate what a Steam game actually earns, reconcile the monthly Steam Sales Report, subtract its Applicable Adjustments, apply your contractual revenue share, account for withholding, and then subtract documented business expenses and developer-side taxes. Your agreement, records and jurisdiction—not a generic percentage—determine the result.
