Estimate runtime with capacity (Wh) × usable-efficiency factor ÷ average load (W). A 1,000 Wh station running a steady 100 W load, for example, is roughly 8.0–8.5 hours with the 0.8–0.85 planning factors used in manufacturer guidance. Then perform two separate checks: the combined running load must stay below the station’s continuous output, and any motor or compressor startup must stay below its surge rating.
The two calculations you must make
A portable power station has an energy reservoir and an output limit. The reservoir is measured in watt-hours (Wh); the output limit is measured in watts (W). These answer different questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- How long? Compare stored energy in Wh with the device’s average consumption in W.
- Can it start and keep running the device? Compare the load’s running and startup watts with the station’s continuous and surge ratings.
The idealized runtime equation is:
Runtime (hours) = capacity (Wh) ÷ load (W)
That division assumes every watt-hour reaches the appliance. In practice, an AC inverter and the station’s electronics consume some energy, and the battery may not deliver its nameplate capacity under every condition. For planning, use:

Jackery Support suggests a rough 0.8 factor. EcoFlow uses an efficiency assumption and shows 0.85 as a practical example. Those are planning allowances, not universal constants or guaranteed test results. If your station manual supplies its own estimate or efficiency guidance, use that information first.
What Wh and W mean in plain language
Watt-hours are the fuel tank
One watt-hour represents one watt used for one hour, or 100 watts used for 0.01 hours. A 500 Wh station theoretically contains twice the energy of a 250 Wh station, although usable runtime depends on the output path and losses.
Watts are the rate of use
A device drawing 50 W uses energy half as quickly as a 100 W device. If both draw steadily from the same station, the 50 W device runs about twice as long before efficiency and other conditions are considered.
Why the label wattage can mislead
A nameplate often gives a maximum, nominal, or operating figure rather than the average over time. A refrigerator, freezer, or heat-pump appliance cycles: its compressor runs, stops, and starts again. A laptop charger may draw more while charging than after the battery is nearly full. For changing loads, calculate with the average draw over the period you care about, or measure it.
Worked runtime examples
Steady 100 W AC load on a 1,000 Wh station
Using EcoFlow’s illustrative 0.85 planning factor:
1,000 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 100 W = 8.5 hours
Using Jackery Support’s rough 0.8 factor gives 8.0 hours. Report this as an estimate, not a promise: actual time changes with the device’s real draw, inverter behavior, temperature, battery condition, and any other connected loads.

50 W load on a 500 Wh station
Theoretical runtime is 500 Wh ÷ 50 W = 10 hours. Applying a 0.85 planning factor produces approximately 8.5 hours, the type of example given in manufacturer guidance.

EcoFlow shows 700 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 70 W ≈ 8.5 hours. The arithmetic demonstrates the method; it is not a guarantee for every 700 Wh product or every 70 W appliance.
Several devices at once
Add the watts of devices that operate simultaneously, then use that combined average in the equation. If a 60 W monitor, 40 W router, and 20 W laptop average are all on together, the load is 120 W:
1,000 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 120 W ≈ 7.1 hours
This assumes all three averages overlap for the whole period. If the laptop charges for only part of the time, use a time-weighted average or measure the complete setup instead.
Check output limits before trusting the runtime
A station can have enough Wh for a long runtime yet still fail to operate an appliance if its inverter cannot supply the required watts.
Continuous AC output
Continuous output is the power the station is designed to provide while a load is running. Add the running watts of every AC device that will be on at the same time and compare that sum with the station’s continuous AC rating. Leave practical headroom rather than planning to operate permanently at the exact limit.

Surge or peak output
Motors and compressors can demand a brief startup surge several times higher than their running draw. Compare that startup demand with the station’s surge or peak rating. A station may show a comfortable runtime calculation and still trip its protection or fail to start a refrigerator, freezer, pump, or air conditioner.
Capacity and output are separate specifications
| Specification | What it tells you | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity (Wh) | Approximate stored energy | How long can the station supply my average load? |
| Continuous AC output (W) | Sustained inverter power | Can it run all connected devices at once? |
| Surge/peak output (W) | Short startup capability | Can it start a motor or compressor? |
| Port type and rating | Which output path is available and how much it can deliver | Can I use AC, DC, USB, or USB-C directly? |
As a concrete manual example, the Jackery Explorer 1000 Pro is listed with 1,002 Wh capacity, 1,000 W rated AC output, and 2,000 W peak surge. Those figures illustrate why energy capacity, continuous output, and startup capability must be checked independently; they do not establish that this model is suitable for your particular load.
A repeatable sizing procedure
- List every device. Include appliances, chargers, lights, networking equipment, and the station’s own accessories that will draw power during the same period.
- Record each device’s actual or average watts. Use a label only as an initial estimate. For variable loads, obtain an average over representative use.
- Separate simultaneous loads from sequential loads. Add only the devices that overlap when checking continuous output. For runtime, total their energy over the period or use a time-weighted average.
- Identify startup loads. Note motors, compressors, pumps, and other devices that may briefly draw more than their running wattage.
- Choose the output path. Decide whether each device will use AC, a compatible DC socket, USB-A, or USB-C. Direct DC can avoid inverter conversion and may extend runtime.
- Read the station’s label or manual. Write down capacity in Wh, continuous output, surge output, and the rating of the specific port you plan to use.
- Apply a documented planning factor. Use the manufacturer’s stated estimate when available; otherwise label a 0.8 or 0.85 factor clearly as a rough planning assumption.
- Calculate runtime. Multiply Wh by the factor and divide by average watts.
- Perform the output checks. Confirm combined running watts are below continuous output and startup demand is below surge output.
- Round down for planning. Keep a reserve for changing conditions, additional loads, and the point at which you need the station to remain operational.
AC versus direct DC and USB power
AC appliances use the station’s inverter, which converts battery energy into household-style alternating current. That conversion introduces losses. A compatible DC or USB output can bypass the AC inverter for devices designed to accept that voltage, potentially improving usable runtime.

Verify voltage, connector type, polarity where applicable, and the port’s wattage limit. A laptop’s USB-C input, for example, may require a specific power-delivery profile; a USB port that physically accepts the cable may not provide enough power. Include adapters and conversion equipment in your load plan.
How to measure a real load instead of guessing
Measurement is most valuable when a nameplate is missing, a device cycles, or a short estimate would affect emergency planning.
AC measurement
EcoFlow identifies a plug-in AC watt meter as a useful tool. Place it between the wall outlet and the appliance, observe startup and running behavior, and record the average over a representative operating period. A brief reading can capture a compressor’s startup but miss its later cycling, so log long enough to include normal on and off periods.

USB and USB-C measurement
An inline USB or USB-C meter can show the power delivered through those ports. Measure the complete device-and-cable arrangement you intend to use; charging behavior changes as a battery fills.
Record a repeatable test
- Port used: AC, DC, USB-A, or USB-C.
- Device and operating mode.
- Starting and ending state of charge shown by the station.
- Elapsed time.
- Observed watts, including peaks or cycling.
- Room or outdoor temperature and any other connected loads.
A representative test lets you replace a generic factor with an observed result for that station, port, device, and condition. It still does not guarantee identical performance at a different temperature, battery age, or load profile.
Variable, cycling, and high-startup loads
Use average draw for cycling appliances
If a refrigerator averages 80 W over a full duty cycle but briefly runs at a higher wattage, use the 80 W average for a runtime estimate and check the compressor’s startup demand separately. Using the running wattage continuously is a conservative screening calculation; it will usually understate or otherwise fail to predict exact runtime because it ignores off periods.
Why simple math is weak for air conditioners and freezers
Jackery Support cautions that its simple capacity-times-factor method is best for stable loads and should not be treated as a precise prediction for variable or high-startup-power devices such as air conditioners, refrigerators, and freezers. For these, measure a full operating cycle and verify startup capability.
Account for standby consumption
Some stations continue drawing a small amount of energy while an AC outlet, display, or communication function is enabled, even when the connected device is idle. Turn off unused outputs and include any always-on accessories in the average-load measurement.
What changes actual runtime
- Real device draw: the appliance may consume more or less than its label.
- Duty cycle: compressors, heaters, and thermostatically controlled devices switch on and off.
- Conversion losses: AC inverter use generally differs from direct DC or USB use.
- Temperature: environmental conditions can change battery and electronic performance.
- Battery condition: age and prior use can affect available energy.
- Other loads: every connected device, including chargers and station electronics, consumes part of the available energy.
- Port limits: a DC or USB outlet may have a lower wattage limit than the station’s headline AC output.
Jackery’s support guidance states that its calculation is approximate and that actual runtime varies with usage and environmental conditions. Treat the equation as a planning tool, then validate important use cases with a measured test.

Choosing a station from your load profile
Start with the devices and duration, not a capacity number picked in isolation.
| Selection question | Specification to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| How much energy is needed? | Usable capacity in Wh | Sets potential duration after losses |
| How many devices run together? | Continuous output in W | Determines whether simultaneous loads can stay on |
| Will a motor or compressor start? | Surge/peak output in W | Determines startup compatibility |
| Which connections are practical? | AC, DC, USB-A, USB-C ports and their individual ratings | Determines conversion losses and whether plugs match |
| Will you move it often? | Weight and portability | A larger energy store may be impractical to transport |
Check the exact model and regional version in the current manufacturer documentation. Capacity alone cannot establish that a station will run an appliance.
Troubleshooting a runtime estimate that does not match reality
The station shuts off even though the Wh calculation looked sufficient
Check continuous output first, then startup surge. A brief overload can trip protection before the battery energy is exhausted. Also verify that the appliance is connected to a port rated for its demand.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Runtime is much shorter than the estimate
Measure actual watts, including cycling and standby draw. Confirm whether the calculation used AC while the device is actually drawing through an inefficient adapter, and check for other connected loads. Recalculate with the measured average rather than the nameplate.
The station runs a device but it repeatedly restarts
Look for compressor or motor startup peaks, a marginal surge rating, or an extension and adapter arrangement that is not suitable for the load. Test the appliance alone and compare observed peaks with the station’s surge specification.
Direct DC did not improve runtime
Confirm that the DC voltage and connector are genuinely compatible, that the DC port is not current-limited, and that the device is not simultaneously using another charging path. Measure both configurations under the same operating conditions.

If startup demand exceeds surge output, use a compatible station with greater peak capability or remove that appliance from the plan. If the runtime is too short while output checks pass, increase usable Wh, reduce average watts, use a compatible direct-DC path, or shorten the required operating period.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Use Wh × factor ÷ average W for a realistic planning estimate; ideal Wh ÷ W is an upper-bound calculation.
- Use average consumption for changing loads, and measure a representative cycle when accuracy matters.
- Check continuous output and startup surge separately from capacity.
- AC, DC, and USB paths can produce different runtimes because conversion losses differ.
- Keep the manufacturer’s model-specific specifications and your measured load record with your emergency plan.
