To see whether Amazon Prime is worth renewing, compare the fee shown in your account with the realistic cost of alternatives to the benefits you actually used—not the advertised value of everything Prime makes available. Add those avoided costs for the same period, then subtract the membership fee and any separate add-ons.
Use one period and one formula
A year is usually the most useful period because membership fees and many subscriptions are billed annually. You can use a month instead, but keep every benefit and fee on that same timeline.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Estimated net value = realistic value of benefits actually used − Prime membership fee − separately paid add-ons.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA positive estimate means the alternatives you would realistically pay for cost more than your Prime membership and add-ons. A negative estimate means they cost less. This is a personal estimate, not a precise accounting measure: replacement services may differ, and household members may use benefits differently.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
How to calculate whether Prime is worth it
- Choose the period. Use the coming year if you are deciding whether to renew, or a month if you are comparing monthly costs. Do not mix periods.
- Enter your actual membership fee. Check the amount and billing terms in your Amazon account or renewal notice for your membership type. Do not rely on an older price quoted elsewhere: Amazon Pay published U.S. prices of $14.99 monthly or $139 annually in 2022, but those figures are historical, not verified current pricing.
- List the benefits you used during that period. Record actual delivery choices, services, or other benefits used—not every benefit included or promoted.
- For each benefit, identify your realistic alternative. Ask, “What would I have paid, or what would I reasonably buy instead, if I did not have this benefit?” If you would not pay for a substitute, assign zero or a conservative value.
- Subtract add-ons and total the estimate. Include separate subscriptions or services only if you pay for them. Add the defensible avoided costs, then subtract the Prime fee and those extra charges.
How much do I need to order for Prime to pay for itself?
There is no universal order count: it depends on the shipping charges you would actually have paid without Prime, your delivery choices, and the membership fee shown for your account. For a delivery-only estimate, add only the shipping charges avoided on orders where you would otherwise have paid for shipping. Do not assign a value to an order that would have qualified for free shipping anyway, or count faster delivery as savings unless you would have paid extra for that speed.
Then compare those avoided charges with the fee for the same period. If your avoided shipping costs fall short, delivery alone has not covered the fee in your estimate; other benefits you actually use may still affect the overall calculation.

Estimate each benefit against a plausible alternative
Use a simple spreadsheet or calculator. Give each line an estimate and a confidence rating so uncertain or rarely used benefits do not inflate the total.
| Benefit | What to count | Plausible alternative | Estimated avoided cost | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Orders for which Prime changed a shipping charge or delivery choice you would have paid to change | The shipping charge or paid delivery option you would otherwise choose | Only the charge actually avoided | High if based on order history and a known charge; lower if estimated |
| Video | Prime Video viewing you would otherwise replace with a paid service | A service or rental you would actually buy | Zero or conservative value if you would not pay for a substitute | Based on whether you would genuinely subscribe or rent |
| Music | Use of the included music benefit that replaces a paid music option | A music service you would otherwise purchase | Value only for a substitute you would realistically pay for | Lower if playback limits mean it does not replace your usual listening option |
| Reading or photo storage | Use that replaces a paid reading or storage service | The specific subscription or storage plan you would otherwise buy | Value only when there is a credible paid alternative | Reflect how much of the included benefit you actually use |
| Pharmacy | Eligible medication purchases where the Prime price is better than your real alternative | Your insurance copay or the price at another pharmacy | The actual difference for those purchases | Check each medication, eligibility, insurance, and alternative price |
Do not count the same use twice. For example, if one subscription already replaces both video and another entertainment option in your budget, do not credit Prime with avoiding both costs unless you truly would have paid for both. Likewise, a deal is not savings if it prompted an extra purchase: include the purchase cost rather than treating the discount as free value.

Is Amazon Prime worth it if I only use delivery?
It can be, but calculate delivery on its own using the shipping charges or paid delivery choices you would actually have selected without Prime. Compare that total with your current account fee for the same period. If you would usually choose free shipping, combine orders, or wait for delivery, those orders may add little or no avoided cost. Do not count unrelated benefits simply because they are available if you do not use them.
Check what is included and what costs extra
Amazon’s Prime page describes benefits including delivery, Prime Video, Amazon Music, and Prime Day. Availability and conditions can vary by geography, plan, account, and date, so check the benefits shown in your own account rather than assuming every membership has the same package.

Amazon’s Amazon Music FAQ distinguishes Music Prime from the separate Music Unlimited subscription and describes playback limitations. If those limitations mean Music Prime would not replace the service you would otherwise buy, lower its estimated value accordingly.
Prime Video Ad Free requires a separate subscription. Amazon Family allows sharing of specified benefits subject to household requirements; Amazon says Prime Video Ad Free cannot be shared through Family. Review Amazon Family’s rules before dividing a household’s estimated value among members.

Value medication benefits using your own prices
Amazon Pharmacy says Prime members save “up to 80%” on brand and generic medication, but that is not a guaranteed saving for an individual. Its page says the figures are based on usage and Inside Rx data compared with cash prices, and reports average savings of 70% for all generics and 37% for select brand medications; restrictions apply. These are Amazon-reported figures, not a substitute for checking your own medication prices.
For your estimate, compare the price available to you for each eligible medication with your insurance copay and the price you could get from another pharmacy. Count only the actual difference you would realize. Amazon Pharmacy also describes RxPass at $5 per month for eligible medications, regardless of how many eligible prescriptions a member has; eligibility restrictions apply. Include that charge only if you pay for RxPass, and compare it with what your eligible prescriptions would otherwise cost.
Keep One Medical separate from Prime
Amazon says One Medical membership is not included with Prime. Its One Medical page lists a Prime-member price of $99 per year for the first member and $66 per year for each additional family member, up to five, subject to terms. Treat it as an optional, separate expense—not a Prime benefit. If you are calculating the combined value of Prime and One Medical, subtract that membership fee and account for any scheduled-appointment costs billed to you or your insurance.

For each option, use the same period and compare the fee, benefits you expect to use, plausible substitute prices, add-ons, eligibility, household sharing, and confidence in your estimates. If comparing monthly and annual billing, use the current terms shown in your account and how long you expect to keep the membership; do not assume annual billing is cheaper without checking the offer.
For a renewal decision, use a realistic forecast for the coming year, not an unusually busy past month. If the result is close, mark uncertain lines as low confidence and see whether your decision changes when you assign them zero. That sensitivity check shows whether renewal depends on a benefit you may not actually use.
