To estimate a crypto remittance before sending it, calculate two amounts: what leaves your hands and what the recipient can actually spend. Include the crypto purchase, provider and network charges, exchange-rate spreads, recipient conversion and withdrawal costs, and any applicable taxes. Use the live quotes for the exact amount, asset, network, provider, and recipient currency you plan to use.

Calculate sender outlay and recipient proceeds separately

A transfer fee alone does not tell you the total cost. A service can advertise no transfer fee while recovering costs through its exchange rate, conversion, or withdrawal charges. The CFPB identifies provider fees, exchange-rate costs, and government taxes as components of remittance costs; it also warns that a “free” claim can obscure costs embedded in rates or digital-wallet conversion and withdrawal.

Use these two totals:

  • Sender outlay: the total amount debited or paid to fund the transfer, including any fiat deposit charge, crypto purchase or conversion cost, provider charge, sender-paid withdrawal or network fee, and applicable taxes.
  • Recipient proceeds: the local-currency amount the recipient can spend after converting the crypto if needed, then paying recipient-side exchange, agent, bank, withdrawal, and applicable tax charges.

Your overall cost is the difference between the sender’s outlay, expressed in a common currency, and the recipient’s spendable proceeds, adjusted for any amount intentionally left with the recipient as crypto. For a straightforward comparison, record both the sender’s total debit and the recipient’s final local-currency proceeds. Do not subtract a charge a second time if the quoted rate already incorporates it or the quoted received amount is already net of it.

Build the estimate from the live quotes

  1. Record the sender’s funding amount. Note how much will leave the bank, card, or account, including any deposit or funding charge. Distinguish the amount you intend to remit from the total debit required to fund it.
  2. Check the crypto purchase quote. Record the asset amount, purchase or conversion rate, and any stated trading fee. A spread may be reflected in the rate rather than itemized as a separate fee.
  3. Confirm the asset and network. The recipient must be able to receive the selected asset on the selected network. Copy the live withdrawal or send preview, including any fee, and identify whether the charge is paid separately, deducted from the transfer, or included in the provider’s estimate.
  4. Record what is expected to arrive. Use the preview’s net amount and denomination, not simply the amount you entered. Note the quote time because rates and network costs can change.
  5. Price the recipient’s exit to local currency. If the recipient needs cash or local-currency funds, obtain the actual exchange or cash-out quote and include the recipient’s conversion, agent, bank, and withdrawal charges.
  6. Add taxes and possible third-party deductions. Include applicable taxes and any known recipient-bank or intermediary charges. If an amount is uncertain, mark it as uncertain rather than silently treating it as zero.
  7. Calculate the net result. Convert all amounts to a consistent currency and calculate recipient spendable proceeds and total sender outlay. Then divide the difference by sender outlay to express the cost as a percentage.

Use a fill-in worksheet

Item Value to copy from the quote
Sender funding debit Amount leaving the bank, card, or account, including funding charges
Crypto purchase or conversion Asset amount, quoted rate, and separately stated purchase or trade charges
Send route Asset, network, provider, and quote time
Sender-side send cost Provider, withdrawal, or network charge; note whether it is separate or already reflected in the net amount
Amount expected to arrive Asset and net amount shown in the send preview
Recipient conversion Local-currency quote and any exchange, agent, or conversion charges
Recipient withdrawal and third-party costs Cash-out, bank, intermediary, or other known charges
Taxes Applicable sender- or recipient-side taxes
Recipient spendable proceeds Local-currency amount after necessary conversion and deductions

Cost percentage = (sender outlay converted to the same currency − recipient spendable proceeds) ÷ sender outlay converted to that currency × 100. If the recipient intends to keep the crypto, report the delivered crypto amount separately; do not present it as local-currency proceeds or assume a future conversion rate.

Provider fees and exchange-rate spread

A provider may show a separate fee, use a less favorable exchange rate, or combine both. Compare the rate with a relevant reference rate only if you have one for the same time and currency pair; the difference is a way to identify a possible spread, not necessarily a separately billed charge. CFPB remittance disclosures in the United States are designed to show the exchange rate, fees, and expected recipient amount for covered transfers, which makes those figures useful to check before payment.

Network fees and withdrawal charges

A blockchain network fee is not the same thing as an exchange’s fee to withdraw or a recipient service’s charge to convert crypto to cash. A provider may estimate a network charge and show it at transaction time. For example, Coinbase says external wallet sends typically incur network fees and that it estimates the fee for a stand-alone wallet-to-wallet send; it also says transfers between Coinbase users’ primary balances do not incur network fees. Those statements describe Coinbase services, not all crypto transfers.

Network conditions

Network charges can change between an old example and your actual transaction. Ethereum documentation describes an ordinary ETH transfer as requiring 21,000 gas units, but the fee price depends on current conditions; its displayed example is illustrative, not a quote. Ethereum’s priority fee depends on network usage at transaction time. Use the current send preview rather than an old fee figure.

Recipient-side conversion

Crypto arriving in a wallet is not automatically equivalent to spendable local currency. If the recipient needs local money, include the conversion rate and every required cash-out step. The IMF has cautioned that crypto-to-fiat conversion costs can reduce efficiency, so a low-cost on-chain transfer may not mean a low-cost remittance overall.

Compare routes on the same basis

For a fair comparison, collect quotes at roughly the same time and hold constant the sender amount, corridor, recipient currency, and delivery method. Record:

  • the sender’s total debit;
  • purchase and conversion rates, including any spread or trading charge;
  • provider, network, and withdrawal charges;
  • recipient conversion and cash-out deductions;
  • taxes and third-party fees;
  • delivery speed; and
  • recipient spendable proceeds.

A route cannot be called cheapest based on a headline fee or an old market-wide statistic. Its live, corridor-specific net proceeds are what matter.

Understand the U.S. disclosure caveat

CFPB guidance says U.S. remittance transfer providers generally disclose relevant transfer amounts, provider fees and taxes, the total transaction amount, exchange rate, certain covered third-party fees, and the amount expected in the recipient currency before payment. The CFPB’s consumer guidance describes protections that generally cover U.S. consumers using a qualifying provider for transfers over $15. Whether those requirements apply depends on the provider and transaction. The cited guidance does not establish that a self-custody crypto transaction receives the same treatment, and U.S. rules should not be assumed to apply in other jurisdictions.

Historical figures are not a substitute for your live quote. An IMF policy paper published in 2023 reported conventional-remittance statistics for a $200 transfer in 2020, including a 5.7% average fee, with a 4% 25th percentile and 7.7% 75th percentile. The same paper discussed a $2.72 median Bitcoin network transaction fee over a three-year period and a historical 2.9% median transaction-fee share based on a constructed denominator. These are dated measures drawn from cited sources, not current prices or a direct comparison of specific crypto and fiat services.
