Calculate branded-video ROI as: [(incremental value attributable to the video − total video investment) ÷ total video investment] × 100. The difficult part is not the arithmetic. You must define which costs belong in the investment, measure an outcome that matches the campaign objective, and estimate what happened because of the video rather than counting conversions or views that would have occurred anyway.
This guide shows how to set the scope, choose a measurement design, value brand outcomes, calculate ROI and related metrics, and report uncertainty without presenting attribution as proof of causation.

What branded-video ROI actually measures
Return on investment (ROI) asks whether the value created by a video exceeded the money committed to it. For a financial outcome, use:
ROI (%) = [(incremental value attributable to the video − total video investment) ÷ total video investment] × 100

“Incremental” is the essential word. A person may have bought from your company without seeing the video. If that purchase is credited to the campaign merely because a platform recorded an impression or click, it is attributed value, not necessarily incremental value.
Define “value” before launch. It might be incremental profit, incremental revenue, the approved value of qualified leads, or another financial measure. Revenue is not profit: if your organization normally evaluates marketing on contribution margin, use that margin consistently. If you use revenue because profit data is unavailable, label the result as revenue-based ROI and disclose the limitation.
Define “investment” just as explicitly. A complete branded-video assessment can include production, talent, post-production, music and other rights, paid distribution, and measurement. There is no universal platform rule that determines your boundary; your organization must choose one and apply it consistently when comparing campaigns.
ROI, ROAS and other metrics are not interchangeable
Video reports often place several ratios next to one another. Give each its proper name so stakeholders do not confuse delivery, attribution and profitability.
| Metric | Formula | What it answers | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| ROI | (Incremental value − total investment) ÷ total investment | Did the value created exceed the full cost included in the analysis? | It does not prove causality unless the value is estimated with an appropriate design. |
| Incremental ROAS (iROAS) | Incremental conversion value ÷ total ad spend | How much incremental conversion value was generated per dollar of advertising spend? | It excludes non-media costs unless you deliberately add them to the denominator; it is not ROI. |
| Standard attributed ROAS | Attributed conversion value ÷ ad spend | How much value a selected attribution model assigned to the ads? | Assigned credit can include conversions that would have happened without the video. |
| Cost per incremental conversion (iCPA) | Total ad spend ÷ incremental conversions | What did each additional conversion cost in media terms? | It does not include production or other costs unless you change the denominator. |
| Engagement rate, views or watch time | Platform-specific delivery or interaction calculation | Was the video delivered, watched or interacted with? | Engagement alone is not a financial return. |
Google’s Conversion Lift documentation defines incremental conversions as treatment conversions minus control conversions, and incremental ROAS as incremental conversion value divided by total ad spend. Use those labels rather than calling an attributed ROAS figure “ROI.”
Start with the business objective
A video can serve several jobs, but the primary job determines the outcome you should use in the ROI calculation. Write the objective in one sentence before selecting a dashboard or survey.
Incremental sales or leads
Specify the conversion event, the eligible audience, the conversion window and the financial value. For ecommerce, that may be a completed order with a contribution-margin value. For lead generation, it may be a sales-qualified lead multiplied by an agreed expected value. Do not change the event or value definition after seeing the result.

Awareness, recall or consideration
Use a brand-lift survey that compares people exposed to the video with a control group. Typical measures include aided or unaided awareness, ad recall, consideration, favorability and purchase intent. A lift in a survey percentage is an outcome, not a dollar amount. If you convert it to money, document the valuation model and every assumption; the measurement sources do not prescribe a universal price for one percentage point of awareness.
Multiple objectives
Keep the outcomes separate. Report incremental conversions and their financial value in one section, brand-lift results in another, and delivery metrics as diagnostics. Combining them into one invented “total value” is defensible only when finance has approved a transparent valuation method that prevents double counting.
Set the investment boundary before launch
List every cost category you intend to include, then use the same list for the numerator and denominator across comparable campaigns. A practical full-campaign boundary can contain:
- Concept development, creative strategy and production management.
- Directing, crew, locations, set construction, equipment and insurance.
- Talent fees, usage extensions, voice-over and appearance rights.
- Editing, color, sound mix, captions, translations, cut-downs and versioning.
- Music, stock footage, trademarks and other licenses.
- Paid distribution or media spend, including trafficking and applicable platform fees.
- Brand-lift, conversion-lift, analytics, data or survey costs.
Some organizations publish two views: a full-program ROI that includes production and measurement, and a media-only iROAS that uses ad spend as the denominator. Both can be useful if their scopes are named. Never compare a media-only result from one campaign with a fully loaded result from another.
Choose a measurement method that can answer your question
| Method | Best use | Comparison | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand-lift survey | Awareness, ad recall, consideration, favorability and purchase intent | Survey responses from an exposed group versus a control group | Smaller lifts require more responses to detect reliably, and the result does not supply a universal dollar value for brand equity. |
| Conversion-lift experiment | Incremental conversions and conversion value | A treatment group eligible to see the ads versus a withheld control group | Availability and design depend on the platform, account and audience; the result applies to the measured period and population. |
| Standard attribution reporting | Routine path and channel reporting | Credit assigned to recorded interactions under a selected attribution model | Attribution is not automatically causal incrementality. |
| Delivery and engagement metrics | Checking reach, views, completion and watch behavior | Platform signals such as impressions, reach, views and watch time | Signals and standards vary across web, social, connected TV and streaming environments; they do not establish financial ROI by themselves. |
The Interactive Advertising Bureau notes that video measurement signals, standards and methodologies vary widely across environments. When comparing placements, align the outcome, audience definition, exposure and control rules, time window and included costs. A view in one environment may not be equivalent to a view in another.
Use incrementality when the question is “because of the video”
A randomized exposed-versus-control design is the clearest practical way to estimate causal impact. In a conversion-lift study, eligible users are randomly assigned to a treatment group that can receive the ad and a control group that is withheld from it. After the agreed conversion window:
- Count conversions in the treatment group.
- Count conversions in the control group.
- Calculate incremental conversions as treatment conversions minus control conversions, using the platform’s documented weighting when group sizes differ.
- Calculate incremental conversion value as treatment conversion value minus control conversion value.
- Carry the study’s audience, dates and confidence or uncertainty information into the report.
For example, suppose a hypothetical study records 1,240 conversions in treatment and 1,000 in a comparable control after adjustment. The estimated increment is 240 conversions. If treatment value is $148,800 and control value is $120,000, incremental conversion value is $28,800. Those figures are illustrative, not a benchmark; your study must use its own observed counts and values.

If randomization is unavailable, you can still report attributed conversions, geo experiments, matched-market tests or modeled estimates, but describe the design and avoid causal language that the method cannot support. A simple before-and-after comparison is vulnerable to seasonality, pricing changes, product launches, competitor activity and other factors that affect both periods.

Calculate the financial result
Full-program ROI
Assume the hypothetical incremental value is $28,800 and your stated full investment is $20,000, including production, rights, distribution and measurement. The calculation is:
[(28,800 − 20,000) ÷ 20,000] × 100 = 44%
That is a 44% incremental ROI under the stated assumptions. If the same campaign spent $12,000 on media but the full investment remained $20,000, its media-only iROAS would be 28,800 ÷ 12,000 = 2.4, or $2.40 of incremental conversion value per dollar of ad spend. The two figures answer different questions and should appear in separate columns.
Break-even and negative results
Break-even occurs when incremental value equals the investment, producing 0% ROI. A negative ROI means the measured incremental value did not recover the included cost. Do not “repair” a negative result by replacing incremental value with total attributed revenue, omitting production costs or extending the conversion window after the fact.
Profit versus revenue
If an order produces $100 in revenue but only $35 in contribution margin after product and fulfillment costs, using $100 as value will overstate economic return when the decision is about profit. State whether your value basis is revenue, gross profit, contribution margin, lifetime value or an approved lead value, and keep that basis consistent.

Valuing brand outcomes without false precision
Brand effects often appear before a purchase and may influence people outside the immediate conversion window. A survey can show that exposed respondents have higher awareness or consideration than controls, but the percentage-point lift is not inherently a financial return.
If finance requires a dollar estimate, create a documented model. One possible approach is to connect an incremental consideration lift to a validated historical relationship between consideration and future contribution margin. Another is to assign a conservative expected value to qualified demand generated during a defined period. Whichever approach you use:

- State the source and date of the relationship used.
- Identify whether the value is observed, modeled or assumed.
- Use a range or scenarios when the relationship is uncertain.
- Prevent the same person or conversion from being counted in both direct-response and brand-value buckets.
- Keep the unmonetized brand-lift result visible alongside the modeled dollar result.
Do not present a modeled brand value as if the survey itself measured dollars. The measurement sources establish how to compare exposed and control responses, not a universal valuation for awareness, favorability or intent.
Plan the study and data before the video runs
- Write the objective. State whether the primary goal is incremental sales, leads, awareness, consideration, preference or a defined combination.
- Define the eligible audience. Record geography, age or customer status rules, exclusions, devices and any frequency limits.
- Choose the outcome and value basis. Name the conversion event, survey questions, attribution window and financial value before launch.
- Choose treatment and control rules. Document how exposure is randomized or how markets are matched, and how contamination or cross-device exposure will be handled.
- Set the cost boundary. Approve the production, rights, distribution and measurement categories that will enter the investment denominator.
- Set the observation window. Use a period long enough to capture the expected response, but do not extend it selectively after seeing the result.
- Predefine reporting fields. Capture audience size, delivery, exposure rate, conversions, conversion value, survey responses, uncertainty, spend and every included cost category.
- Freeze the definitions. Changes to conversion rules, value, audience or costs require a dated note and a separate result rather than a silent revision.
Interpret uncertainty and null results
Every lift estimate has sampling and design uncertainty. Report the estimate with the interval or significance information supplied by the measurement system, the sample or conversion counts, and the study dates. A small positive point estimate may not distinguish a real effect from noise; a result that is not statistically conclusive is not proof that the video had no effect.

If a survey produces few responses, treat the result as directional and avoid precise financial extrapolation. For conversion-lift studies, check whether the number of conversions and the control design support a stable estimate for the audience you care about.
A null result can also reflect creative or delivery problems. Google notes that late or subtle branding can make it harder for viewers to attribute an ad to the advertised brand, while branding only at the beginning may not significantly lift conversions. Examine branding clarity, exposure frequency, audience fit and the chosen outcome before concluding that video as a channel failed.
Account for differences between video environments
Web video, social feeds, connected television and streaming services may use different definitions for an impression, view, completion, reach and frequency. Some environments provide user-level experiment controls; others offer only aggregated delivery or modeled reporting. Keep the following aligned when you compare them:
- The same business outcome and value basis.
- The same eligible audience or a clearly explained audience adjustment.
- Equivalent exposure and control definitions.
- The same attribution or observation window.
- The same treatment of production, rights, media and measurement costs.
- The same rules for deduplicating people, devices and conversions.
If alignment is impossible, present environment-level results separately and explain why a single blended ROI would be misleading. A high completion rate in one placement cannot compensate mathematically for an unmeasured incremental outcome in another.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling views a return
Problem: A report treats views, watch time or completion as revenue. Correction: Keep delivery metrics as diagnostics and connect them to a measured business or brand outcome.
Best Value
Using attributed revenue as incremental revenue
Problem: A platform assigns credit to every conversion after an impression. Correction: Label it attributed value, or use a treatment-control experiment to estimate incrementality.
Reporting ROAS as ROI
Problem: Conversion value is divided by ad spend and described as profit return. Correction: Call it ROAS or iROAS, and calculate ROI separately with the approved full investment.
Changing the cost boundary between campaigns
Problem: One campaign includes production and another includes media only. Correction: Publish the categories in the denominator and maintain a consistent full-program and media-only view.

Problem: A one-point lift is multiplied by an unsupported dollar amount. Correction: Leave the lift unmonetized or document a validated valuation model with assumptions and a range.
Over-reading a small or late lift
Problem: A tiny survey difference is treated as a precise effect, or a null conversion result is treated as definitive. Correction: Show response counts, uncertainty, branding timing and the limits of the observation window.
A reporting format stakeholders can audit
Put the definitions at the top of the report, not in an appendix. A useful one-page summary contains:
- Objective: the business question and primary outcome.
- Population and period: geography, audience, dates and conversion or survey window.
- Design: randomized treatment-control, matched markets, attribution or modeled analysis.
- Investment: each included cost category and the total.
- Incremental result: incremental conversions, value or brand-lift estimate, with uncertainty.
- Financial calculation: the exact ROI equation and value basis.
- Separate diagnostics: reach, views, watch time, frequency, completion and attributed results.
- Limitations: contamination, missing costs, small samples, cross-environment differences or modeled assumptions.
Retain the underlying treatment and control counts, survey questionnaire, audience exclusions, spend records and calculation sheet. That documentation lets another analyst reproduce the number and identify whether a later change is a true performance difference or simply a change in definitions.

Use this sequence for every branded-video campaign:
- If the objective is direct response, prioritize a conversion-lift experiment and a contribution-based value definition.
- If the objective is brand building, run a brand-lift survey and report the lift without inventing a dollar value unless an approved model exists.
- If the campaign has both jobs, maintain separate direct-response and brand-outcome lines and reconcile only through a documented finance model.
- Use standard attribution for operational optimization, but do not use it as causal proof.
- Use views and watch behavior to diagnose creative and delivery, not to declare ROI.
- Compare campaigns only after aligning audience, outcome, period, experiment design and cost scope.
The resulting ROI is not a universal property of a video file. It is the output of a defined objective, cost boundary, measurement design, value model and time window. Change any of those inputs and you have a different question—and potentially a different answer.
