To estimate an OBS stream’s electricity cost, measure or estimate the average power draw of the equipment you want to count, convert its streaming hours into kilowatt-hours (kWh), then apply your home’s local electricity tariff. There is no single India-wide OBS wattage or household rate that produces a reliable bill estimate.
Calculate the streaming setup’s monthly electricity use
One electricity unit is 1 kWh. The calculation is:
Monthly energy (kWh) = average power (W) × hours used per month ÷ 1,000
For a schedule expressed in days, use:
Monthly energy (kWh) = average power (W) × hours per day × streaming days ÷ 1,000
This is the standard watts-to-kWh conversion given in the Kerala State Council of Educational Research and Training’s 2021 physics text: energy in kWh equals power in watts multiplied by time in hours, divided by 1,000.

Worked example—not a typical OBS wattage
A hypothetical 200 W setup running for 5 hours a day over 30 days uses 30 kWh: 200 × 5 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = 30. The 200 W figure is only an example to show the arithmetic; OBS does not have a universal power draw, and this should not be read as a typical streaming setup.
Decide what equipment to include
OBS itself does not determine the electricity use. The relevant figure is the actual power drawn by the equipment operating during your stream. Decide whether your estimate is for the computer alone or the entire streaming desk, then include only the devices in that scope.

- PC-only estimate: measure or estimate the computer’s draw while streaming.
- Full desk estimate: include the PC and any monitor, speakers, capture devices, lights, or other peripherals you want counted.
Do not treat a component’s nameplate rating as a measured average streaming load. The amount drawn can vary with the computer and what it is doing; a measurement over representative sessions is more useful for estimating your own use.
Measure watts and accumulated kWh during a representative stream
A plug-in electricity usage monitor that displays instantaneous watts and cumulative kWh can help measure connected equipment over actual sessions. For example, Yantram describes its PM10 meter as reporting watts, accumulated kWh, and electricity expense. Check that any meter you choose is rated for the voltage, current, and plug format used by your equipment in India.

- Connect the equipment you intend to include, following the meter manufacturer’s instructions and electrical safety guidance.
- Record the cumulative kWh reading before a representative streaming session.
- Run the stream under your usual conditions and for a representative duration.
- Record the ending kWh reading. Subtract the starting reading to get the session’s measured energy use.
- Repeat across sessions if your streaming workload varies, then use a representative average to project your monthly schedule.
To include several desk devices together, do so only if the meter and electrical arrangement safely support their combined load. A US utility cooperative’s guide to cumulative kWh measurement describes the same measurement concept, but it notes that the Kill-A-Watt meter it discusses cannot be used with 220 V appliances. That specific device should not be assumed suitable for Indian mains.
Convert kWh into an electricity charge using your tariff
For a rough incremental energy-charge estimate, multiply the additional kWh by the marginal energy rate that applies to your home. For a more accurate bill estimate, follow the tariff’s consumption-slab method and account for any relevant fixed charges, duties, subsidies, or other adjustments. Your total bill impact depends on the household’s existing consumption and the rules of your state or territory, DISCOM, and consumer category.

India does not have one domestic electricity rate that should be applied to every OBS stream. The Central Electricity Authority says its Financial Studies & Analysis Division prepares an annual tariff and duty publication by analyzing State Electricity Regulatory Commission tariff orders and collecting subsidy and electricity-duty information; its site lists the March 2026 report. Use the tariff applicable to your own connection rather than treating a national summary or another region’s rates as your bill rate.

Lakshadweep’s FY 2026–27 schedule lists domestic energy charges by consumption slab, as well as fixed charges:

These are Lakshadweep schedule figures, not India-wide rates. The schedule also lists a fixed charge, so multiplying kWh by an energy rate alone does not reproduce every part of a household bill. See the official Lakshadweep tariff schedule and confirm the applicable treatment for your connection before calculating.

- Assuming OBS has one standard wattage: it does not. Use a measured or carefully estimated draw for your actual equipment.
- Forgetting the ÷ 1,000 conversion: watts multiplied by hours gives watt-hours; divide by 1,000 to get kWh.
- Counting only the PC when you mean the desk: add the monitor and other devices if they are part of the estimate.
- Using a flat India-wide rate: use your own connection’s current tariff and billing structure.
- Calling an energy-charge estimate the full bill increase: slabs and other bill components can change the result.
