The reliable way to price a Bitcoin-backed loan is to calculate from the cash or stablecoin you actually receive, then add interest and every mandatory charge over the period you will borrow. Read the agreement for the rate formula, day-count basis, compounding, payment dates, collateral deductions and liquidation rules. A headline annual rate by itself is not an all-in cost.
Start with four separate numbers
Loan quotes often mix principal, proceeds, interest, fees and collateral requirements. Put them into separate lines before comparing anything.

| Measure | What it means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Gross principal | The contractual amount borrowed before deductions. | Use it as the starting balance only if the agreement accrues interest on that amount. |
| Net amount received | Gross principal minus upfront charges withheld from the proceeds. | Use this to judge how much usable cash or stablecoin you obtain. |
| Scheduled cash outlay | Principal repayments, interest payments and mandatory fees paid in cash. | Use it to plan payments during the loan term. |
| Cost of borrowing | Interest plus required charges, excluding returned principal. | Use this when asking what the financing costs you. |
| Total of payments | All scheduled principal, interest and mandatory charges. | Use this to know the amount paid under the contract schedule. |
Also record charges taken from your pledged Bitcoin separately. If you convert a Bitcoin-denominated charge into dollars, state the valuation date and price source; the dollar figure changes as Bitcoin’s price changes.
Collect the contract inputs before doing arithmetic
Copy the following fields from the actual offer, term sheet and collateral agreement. If a field is missing, ask the lender rather than assuming a market convention.

Calculate interest using the agreement’s method
Simple interest on a constant principal
For a contract that uses simple interest on an unchanged principal, the estimate is:
Interest = principal × annual rate × elapsed days ÷ day-count denominator
Use the rate as a decimal. For example, 2.50% is 0.025. Count the days exactly as the contract specifies, including any rule for the first or last day.

Illustrative arithmetic, not a market quote
Suppose a contract—not a typical-rate claim—states a $10,000 principal, 2.50% simple annual interest, 90 actual days and a 360-day denominator:
$10,000 × 0.025 × 90 ÷ 360 = $62.50 interest
If the contract requires quarterly interest, that $62.50 would be due at the payment date for the 90-day period. Principal is still owed unless the payment schedule says otherwise. If the loan runs for a different number of days, recalculate rather than prorating by calendar months.
Compounding or a changing balance
Do not use the simple-interest formula when the agreement compounds unpaid interest, adds fees to the balance, or calculates interest on an amortizing balance. For a changing balance, calculate each period from the balance and rate applicable to that period, then follow the contract’s rounding rule. A loan that requires monthly principal payments will normally produce less interest than one that leaves the full principal outstanding, even when the quoted annual rate is identical.
Daily fee accrual can differ from interest accrual
A digital-asset loan form filed with the SEC describes a loan fee that is annualized but calculated daily on actual elapsed days using a 360-day basis. That shows why the fee clause must be read independently from the interest clause. The form is at SEC-filed digital-asset loan form.

Account for fees once—and identify who pays them
For each fee, write the amount, timing, payment method and whether it is already included in another charge. Then place it in one of three buckets.
| Fee location | Calculation treatment | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Withheld from proceeds | Subtract from gross principal to obtain net amount received. | Does interest still accrue on the gross principal or only the amount delivered? |
| Paid in cash during or at the end of the term | Add to scheduled cash outlay and total repayment. | Is it recurring, and on which dates is it due? |
| Deducted from Bitcoin collateral | List separately; convert to currency only with a stated valuation date and price source. | Is the deduction a fixed amount, a percentage of collateral, or a percentage of the loan term? |
Provider-specific examples must stay provider-specific
A public BTCBacked borrowing page currently discloses a one-time platform fee of 1.5% per year of the loan term, deducted from Bitcoin collateral. It also discloses a 5% liquidation fee that applies only under stated default or failure-to-meet-margin conditions. Those figures are that provider’s disclosures, accessed October 13, 2026, and may change; they are not general Bitcoin-loan fees. See the borrowing disclosure and copy the wording in your own agreement.
If a fee is deducted from collateral, it reduces the Bitcoin returned even when your cash payment schedule is unchanged. Do not count it again as a cash fee unless the contract also bills you in cash.

- Enter gross principal. Label the currency and the date funds are advanced.
- Subtract every upfront deduction. The result is net amount received.
- Enter each interest period. Apply the exact rate, balance, elapsed days and denominator from the agreement.
- Add scheduled principal repayments. For an interest-only loan, principal normally remains due at maturity; for an amortizing loan, use the stated repayment schedule.
- Add mandatory cash fees. Include custody, network, extension, repayment and default charges when the contract makes them payable.
- Record collateral deductions separately. Note the Bitcoin amount, the event date and the valuation source used for any currency conversion.
- Calculate cost of borrowing. Add interest and required charges, excluding principal if you are reporting financing cost.
- Calculate total repayment. Add principal to the cost of borrowing and show the dates of each payment.
- Check for double counting. Confirm that an origination or platform fee has not been included both in the rate and as a separate line.

Why APR is not the same as the interest rate
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s official loan-calculation disclosure defines amount financed as the amount available after upfront finance charges, finance charge as the dollar cost of the loan, and total of payments as the scheduled total. It states: Annual Percentage Rate (APR). Your costs over the loan term expressed as a rate. This is not your interest rate.
Read the disclosure at CFPB Loan Calculations.
APR-style comparisons use the timing and amount of money received and every payment made. Two loans can have the same nominal rate and the same dollar finance charge but different annualized results if one delivers less money after fees or requires earlier payments. The CFPB supervisory manual explains that APR measures total credit cost, can include transaction charges, and depends on amount financed and payment timing; it also says, Since an APR measures the total cost of credit, including costs such as transaction charges or premiums for credit guarantee insurance, it is not an “interest” rate, as that term is generally used.
See the CFPB Supervision and Examination Manual.
For a Bitcoin-backed loan, do not label a simple sum of interest and fees as APR. To produce an annualized comparison, list the net proceeds on the date received and every principal, interest and fee payment on its actual date, then apply the APR method required in the relevant jurisdiction. Consumer-credit disclosure rules differ by country, product and borrower, so a U.S. concept should not be treated as a universal legal requirement.

Best Value
| Comparison axis | What to record | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Net proceeds | Amount actually delivered after deductions | Shows usable liquidity rather than advertised principal |
| Rate mechanics | Fixed or floating; simple or compounded; daily basis; balance used | Determines how interest grows |
| Payment schedule | Interest-only, amortizing or bullet; exact dates | Changes cash-flow pressure and annualized cost |
| Mandatory fees | Upfront, recurring, custody, network, extension, repayment, default and liquidation charges | Captures costs omitted from a headline rate |
| Collateral conditions | Initial LTV, margin trigger, liquidation threshold, cure time and top-up rights | Determines how much price movement you can withstand |
| Custody and use of Bitcoin | Custodian, segregation and any permitted reuse | Changes counterparty and operational exposure |
| Early repayment and maturity | Prepayment fee, extension option and balloon amount | Shows whether you can exit without an unexpected charge |
Model collateral risk separately from scheduled cost
Interest and fees describe the ordinary payment schedule. Bitcoin collateral creates a separate, contingent risk: if the collateral value falls, you may have to add Bitcoin or repay part of the loan, and the lender may liquidate under the agreement.
A current SEC filing describes a contractual margin ratio and says that when the ratio falls to or below the applicable liquidation ratio, the lender may liquidate pledged Bitcoin under the agreement. The filing is at SEC filing on margin ratio and liquidation. Extract these variables from your own contract:
- How collateral value is priced, including index, exchange sources and valuation frequency.
- The initial LTV and the margin-call or maintenance threshold.
- The liquidation threshold and whether the lender can act immediately.
- The notice and cure period, if any.
- Whether you can add collateral or repay partially to restore the ratio.
- Any liquidation fee, spread, auction cost or other deduction.
Liquidation is not a predictable fee in the normal schedule. It is a scenario that can turn a loan with modest scheduled interest into a substantially different economic outcome, including loss of Bitcoin exposure and additional charges.

Common calculation mistakes and fixes
- Using the advertised principal as the cash received. Fix: subtract every withheld charge first and record net proceeds.
- Assuming a 365-day year. Fix: copy the contract’s denominator; the filed example above uses 360 days and actual elapsed days.
- Applying simple interest to a compounding loan. Fix: follow the balance update and compounding interval in the agreement.
- Ignoring payment dates. Fix: place each receipt and payment on a dated cash-flow line before making an annualized comparison.
- Counting a fee twice. Fix: mark whether each charge is included in the rate, withheld from proceeds, paid in cash or deducted from collateral.
- Converting Bitcoin fees at an unstated price. Fix: record the valuation date, time and price source.
- Treating a liquidation charge as scheduled cost. Fix: show it in a separate stress or default scenario.
- Assuming one lender’s LTV or margin rule is universal. Fix: use only the thresholds in the specific offer.
- Calling a fee-to-principal ratio APR. Fix: annualize dated proceeds and payments using the applicable APR methodology.
- Forgetting the maturity balloon. Fix: verify whether principal is repaid gradually or in full on the final date.
Final contract review before signing
- Reconcile the amount advanced, amount received and every deduction.
- Recalculate at least one interest period independently from the lender’s illustration.
- Confirm whether weekends, holidays, partial days and late payments alter day counts.
- Ask for a complete fee schedule, including charges triggered by extension, early repayment, default or liquidation.
- Confirm who controls the private keys or custody account and what happens if the custodian is unavailable.
- Run price-drop scenarios for the collateral ratio and write down the required action, deadline and cost at each threshold.
- Check the governing law, borrower eligibility, disclosure obligations and available remedies in your jurisdiction.
- Save the signed agreement and the version of every referenced fee page; public terms can change.
The calculation is only as good as the contract inputs. Rates, fees, LTV limits, liquidation remedies, legal protections and program availability vary by lender, borrower, jurisdiction and date. Use the worksheet to understand a particular offer, not as individualized financial or legal advice.
