How to Calculate the Cash Runway of a Bitcoin Treasury Company

Cash runway (months) = deployable, unrestricted cash ÷ average monthly net cash burn. A Bitcoin treasury company should publish that cash-only result separately from any estimate that assumes selling Bitcoin, borrowing against it or raising capital. For example, $120 million of eligible cash divided by a $10 million monthly net burn gives a 12-month historical estimate. The figure is useful only when the cash definition, burn period, measurement date and included obligations are disclosed.

Start with a cash-only runway

Runway answers a practical question: how long can the company meet cash obligations before its available cash is exhausted? The narrowest and most comparable answer excludes Bitcoin and uncommitted financing. It uses cash that is unrestricted, accessible to the operating entity and available for ordinary obligations.

Write the calculation this way:

Cash runway (months) = eligible unrestricted cash ÷ average monthly net cash burn

If the cash-flow statement shows a negative number, use the positive outflow magnitude in the denominator. A company with $120 million of eligible cash and $10 million of average monthly net cash burn therefore has a 12-month historical runway. That is an arithmetic illustration, not a reported company result or a forecast.

Define eligible cash before dividing

Begin with cash and cash equivalents on the latest balance sheet, then remove amounts that cannot be used for the obligations being analyzed. Check for:

  • Restricted cash, escrow balances and minimum cash requirements.
  • Cash held at subsidiaries where legal, regulatory, lender or joint-venture restrictions limit transfers.
  • Amounts reserved by board policy for a specific purpose.
  • Cash needed to satisfy collateral, margin or covenant requirements.
  • Balances that are technically on the balance sheet but cannot reach the operating entity in time.

State the measurement date and the resulting eligible balance in the article or model. A headline cash total without these adjustments can overstate the period a company can actually operate.

Measure burn from cash flows, not net income

Use the latest cash-flow statement together with the balance sheet. Net income is an accounting result and can diverge sharply from cash generation when Bitcoin fair-value movements, depreciation, stock compensation or other non-cash items are large.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a trailing period

A practical historical measure is average monthly operating cash outflow over a stated trailing period, such as the last three, six or twelve months:

  1. Add the period’s operating cash flows.
  2. Separate inflows from outflows and identify unusual one-time receipts or payments.
  3. Convert the selected period to a monthly average.
  4. Use the positive outflow magnitude as the burn denominator when the net result is negative.

Quarterly filings can produce lumpy numbers. A single quarter may include a large customer payment, tax bill, interest payment or working-capital reversal. Explain why the selected period represents normal operations and show the actual dates.

Decide what the burn includes

There is no universal definition of “burn.” Disclose whether the selected measure includes recurring capital expenditure, lease payments, debt interest, principal repayments, preferred dividends, restructuring costs and other contractual cash uses. Do not subtract the same item both in operating burn and again in a separate obligations schedule.

For an operator that is still building mining capacity, an operating-cash measure may omit growth capital expenditure that is essential to its plan. Present an adjusted burn that adds the relevant maintenance or committed growth spending, or use a forward schedule, rather than presenting the lower historical number as a complete forecast.

Why accounting losses can mislead

Strategy reported a period in which operating cash flow improved while net loss rose substantially because of non-cash unrealized digital-asset losses. That pattern demonstrates why net loss alone cannot calculate runway. Reconcile the cash-flow statement to the balance sheet and identify non-cash Bitcoin gains or losses separately from cash movements.

Bitcoin holdings are not cash runway

A cash-only runway excludes Bitcoin, uncommitted financing and assets that are not freely deployable. Bitcoin can support a broader liquidity scenario, but that is a different measure. It depends on market price, execution time, transaction costs, custody, lending terms, collateral restrictions, management approval and the availability of buyers or lenders.

Classify every Bitcoin balance

Do not treat the balance-sheet fair value of Bitcoin as equivalent to cash. Separate holdings into categories such as:

  • Unpledged Bitcoin held in a liquid custody arrangement.
  • Bitcoin pledged as collateral for a loan or credit line.
  • Bitcoin loaned to a counterparty and subject to recall or counterparty risk.
  • Bitcoin subject to operational, legal or contractual restrictions.
  • Bitcoin that management does not plan to sell under its stated capital-allocation policy.

For each category, state the quantity or fair value, the date, the conditions for monetization and any haircut used in your model. A quoted market price is not a guarantee that the company can sell the entire position at that price immediately.

Model monetization explicitly

If a scenario assumes Bitcoin sales, calculate proceeds from the amount the company could reasonably sell, not from total reported holdings. Apply a conservative price assumption, execution or liquidity haircut, selling costs and the timing of settlement. If Bitcoin is pledged, model the lender’s consent, release mechanics or collateral-sale rules before counting proceeds.

Borrowing against Bitcoin is also a scenario, not cash on hand. Include advance rates, interest, maturity, margin-call risk and the possibility that a price decline forces additional collateral or repayment. A lending arrangement that can be recalled or suspended should not be treated as permanent liquidity.

What public filings show about the distinction

Recent U.S. public-company filings illustrate why total assets and cash runway are different measurements. The figures below are dated disclosures, not current benchmarks; update them from the issuer’s latest filing before using them.

Issuer and date Reported liquidity or assets Why it does not equal cash runway
CleanSpark, June 30, 2026 $920.827 million in total current assets, including cash, prepaid and other current assets, Bitcoin and receivables from Bitcoin collateral; $155.752 million in current liabilities; $1.770878 billion of outstanding zero-coupon convertible notes. Total current assets include non-cash and potentially restricted items, while large convertible-note obligations affect future liquidity.
MARA Holdings, June 30, 2026 $421.3 million of cash and cash equivalents excluding restricted cash; $2.1 billion fair value of Bitcoin holdings. The filing separately described Bitcoin that was loaned and pledged as collateral. The $2.1 billion total is not unrestricted cash.
Strategy, June 30, 2026 and July 24, 2026 USD Reserve of $2.40 billion at June 30 and $3.75 billion at July 24. The later amount included expected ATM proceeds that had not yet settled. Strategy says the reserve is restricted by board policy to preferred dividends and interest; other uses require board authorization. Expected ATM proceeds are not guaranteed cash until issued and settled.

CleanSpark’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 said: “Based on our current plans and business conditions, we believe that existing cash and cash equivalents and bitcoin, together with cash and bitcoin generated from operations and our future financing activities, will be sufficient to satisfy our anticipated cash requirements for the next 12 months until we reach consistent profitability, and we are not aware of any trends or demands, commitments, events or uncertainties that are reasonably likely to result in a decrease in the liquidity of our assets.” This is management’s outlook, not an independently verified cash-only forecast. It also combines cash, Bitcoin, operating generation and future financing, so it should not be labeled a 12-month cash runway.

Build a month-by-month liquidity schedule

The ratio is a useful starting point, but a forward schedule reveals when an individual payment could cause a shortfall. Map expected receipts and disbursements by month or quarter for at least the period covered by the runway estimate.

Opening resources

  • Unrestricted cash and cash equivalents at the measurement date.
  • Restricted balances shown separately, with the condition for release.
  • Operating cash held at subsidiaries and the practical ability to transfer it.
  • Bitcoin monetization only when the transaction, timing and risk adjustment are explicitly modeled.
  • Financing proceeds only when committed, available and documented on known terms.

Operating receipts and payments

  • Mining or other ordinary operating receipts, including collection timing.
  • Power, hosting, payroll, taxes, insurance and other recurring costs.
  • Working-capital movements and seasonal effects.
  • Maintenance and growth capital expenditure, including committed projects.
  • Leases, purchase agreements and cloud or software commitments.

Financing and distribution dates

  • Debt principal due, holder put dates, interest payments and credit-line maturities.
  • Refinancing assumptions, clearly separated from obligations that are already due.
  • Declared, expected and discretionary preferred dividends.
  • Collateral releases, margin requirements and repayment triggers.

Strategy’s latest reviewed filing identified working capital, capital expenditure, expected preferred-stock dividends, debt interest, cloud and software purchase agreements and other contractual obligations among short-term liquidity needs. MARA reported a June 30, 2026 liquidity mix of cash, digital assets and remaining ATM capacity, while also disclosing a credit-line maturity and note principal due within the next twelve months. Those examples show why dates and restrictions can matter more than a headline asset total.

Use scenarios instead of one optimistic number

Present at least a base case and a downside case. Add an upside or management case when financing or Bitcoin monetization is material. Give every case a measurement date, forecast horizon and written assumptions.

Scenario Operating assumptions Bitcoin and financing assumptions What to report
Base Most supportable receipts, expenses, working capital and planned capital expenditure. Only committed financing and Bitcoin sales that have a documented schedule; otherwise exclude them. Cash-only runway, month of minimum cash and any obligation that causes a breach.
Downside Lower receipts, higher costs, delayed collections or required capital spending. Lower Bitcoin sale price, no new financing and reduced or delayed monetization. Shortened runway, funding gap and sensitivity to each major assumption.
Upside or management case Improved operating cash generation or lower spending, with reasons and evidence. Financing or Bitcoin proceeds included only with timing, terms and transaction costs. Additional liquidity, but clearly labeled as conditional rather than available cash.

Compare the cases on five separate axes:

  1. Unrestricted cash runway excluding Bitcoin.
  2. Liquidity after scheduled operating and financing obligations.
  3. Runway including only the Bitcoin monetization explicitly modeled.
  4. Dependence on uncommitted capital-market access.
  5. Sensitivity to Bitcoin price, operating cash flow and debt maturities.

An equity ATM’s remaining capacity is not guaranteed proceeds. A company may face market-price, volume, regulatory, authorization or investor-demand limits, and the proceeds may arrive after a payment is due. Keep capacity in a conditional scenario until shares are issued and cash is settled.

A worked calculation

Assume a company reports $150 million of cash and cash equivalents. The analysis removes $20 million of restricted cash and $10 million held at a subsidiary that cannot be transferred during the forecast period, leaving $120 million of eligible cash. Operating cash outflow over the last six months totals $54 million, or $9 million per month. A $2 million monthly maintenance-capital requirement is not included in that operating figure.

The simple operating-cash ratio is $120 million ÷ $9 million = 13.3 months. If maintenance capital expenditure is recurring and must be funded, the adjusted burn is $11 million and the adjusted runway is approximately 10.9 months. If a $25 million debt principal payment falls in month eight, the forward schedule may show a cash shortfall before either ratio reaches zero. The schedule therefore takes precedence over the ratio for the actual payment date.

Suppose management also owns Bitcoin worth $200 million at the measurement date. That amount remains outside the cash-only calculation. A separate downside case could model selling $60 million of Bitcoin after a 15% price and execution haircut, producing $51 million of modeled proceeds, less any transaction costs. The result should be labeled “runway including modeled Bitcoin sale,” with the assumed sale month and conditions, not simply added to the $120 million cash balance.

Common errors and how to correct them

Counting all Bitcoin as cash

Error: adding reported Bitcoin fair value to unrestricted cash. Correction: classify pledged, loaned and restricted holdings, apply price and execution assumptions and show the Bitcoin-supported result separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using net loss as burn

Error: dividing cash by net loss, especially when unrealized digital-asset losses dominate earnings. Correction: start with cash flows, remove non-cash accounting movements and reconcile to actual obligations.

Ignoring maturities

Error: applying a smooth monthly average while a large note, credit line or dividend falls due in one month. Correction: place principal, interest, put dates and distributions on the forward calendar.

Double-counting capital expenditure or debt service

Error: including an item in operating burn and subtracting it again as a scheduled payment. Correction: document the exact composition of each measure and reconcile the ratio to the schedule.

Treating restricted reserves as general cash

Error: counting a board-designated reserve for preferred dividends or interest as money available for any purpose. Correction: show the restriction and require the stated authorization before modeling another use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Presenting management’s 12-month statement as proof

Error: converting an issuer’s liquidity outlook into an independently verified runway. Correction: attribute the statement, preserve its combined assumptions and label it management’s expectation.

How to publish a defensible runway analysis

  1. Identify the issuer and date. Use the latest 10-K, 10-Q and subsequent material filings available for the analysis date.
  2. Reconcile the opening balance. Tie eligible cash to the balance sheet and explain every restriction or transfer limitation.
  3. Show the burn inputs. Name the trailing period, operating cash-flow figures, adjustments and treatment of capex, leases, interest, principal and dividends.
  4. Calculate the cash-only ratio. Display the numerator, denominator and months with units and dates.
  5. Build the forward schedule. Add receipts, recurring spending, working capital, capital projects, maturities and distributions by period.
  6. Separate Bitcoin liquidity. List unpledged, pledged, loaned and restricted holdings; model only the amount, price, timing and costs you can support.
  7. Separate financing scenarios. Mark ATM capacity, refinancing and future debt or equity as conditional until committed and settled.
  8. Stress the drivers. Test Bitcoin price, operating cash flow, capex, interest, dividends, debt repayment and market access.
  9. Report the first cash-pressure date. If a scheduled obligation creates a deficit before the ratio reaches zero, state that date and the funding assumption required to avoid it.

How to interpret the result

Runway is a ratio, not a promise. Its value changes whenever eligible cash, burn, obligations or financing assumptions change. A company can show a long historical ratio and still face an early liquidity event if a large maturity, collateral call or project payment is concentrated in one period. Conversely, a short trailing ratio may improve if operating receipts are seasonal or a committed financing closes.

For Bitcoin treasury companies, the most informative presentation has three layers: unrestricted cash runway; a dated obligations schedule; and one or more conditional Bitcoin or financing scenarios. Keeping those layers separate lets readers see what the company can pay today, what it must pay next and what management may be able to raise or monetize if market conditions cooperate.

The reviewed public filings do not establish an industry-wide runway benchmark or a universal definition of “cash runway.” Company-specific figures, Bitcoin values, debt, ATM capacity and board policies are date-sensitive. Recalculate whenever a new filing, financing, maturity, Bitcoin transaction or material operating change alters the inputs.
