Then assess collateral risk separately: a fall in Bitcoin’s price can raise your loan-to-value ratio (LTV) and trigger a margin call or liquidation, even if the loan’s scheduled interest looks manageable.
What to include in the borrowing-cost calculation
Start with the loan agreement’s cash flows, not just its advertised interest rate. Record how much money reaches you, when payments are due, and what you must pay to close the loan under the holding period you expect.

- Record the amount received. Use the cash or stablecoins disbursed. Note whether a fee is withheld from the proceeds, added to the loan balance, paid upfront, or taken from your Bitcoin collateral.
- List every payment. Include scheduled interest and principal payments, any balloon or final payment, and the payoff amount for your intended repayment date. For early repayment, check whether the contract requires accrued interest or a prepayment charge.
- Add required fees. Check for origination, platform, custody, transfer, servicing, and other mandatory charges. Record each fee’s amount, timing, and fee base. Keep contingent default or liquidation costs separate from expected scheduled costs.
- Total the expected scheduled outflow. Add scheduled payments and required charges over the period you plan to hold the loan. The scheduled finance charge is the interest and applicable origination costs over that period; the agreement may define the term more specifically. Unchained, for example, describes its finance charge as lifetime interest and origination fees.
- Compare both APR and dollars. APR is a yearly cost measure that can include interest and other credit costs, such as origination fees. Use the lender’s disclosed APR, agreement, and payment schedule together: APR helps compare rates, while total dollars show the expected outflow for your particular loan.
When comparing offers, match the amount actually received, term, currency, payment timing, and repayment assumptions. A headline rate or APR alone cannot reveal whether a fee is deducted from proceeds, financed, or taken from collateral.
Estimate interest only when the loan structure supports it
For a simple interest-only loan with constant principal, estimated interest is:
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Principal × annual interest rate × years
For example, a hypothetical $10,000 loan at 12% simple annual interest for one year would accrue an estimated $1,200 in interest: $10,000 × 0.12 × 1. Add required fees to estimate scheduled finance costs. This illustration is not a lender quote or a complete APR calculation.
The shortcut does not fit an amortizing loan, a variable rate, or a contract with a different accrual or compounding method. Unchained describes its interest-only payments as based on outstanding principal, simple annual interest, and a 365-day year. For a real loan, follow the agreement’s day-count basis, payment dates, balance changes, and rate terms.

How fees change the amount you pay
A fee’s timing changes the cash flow even when its stated percentage is the same. An upfront fee paid from your own funds adds an immediate cost; a fee withheld from proceeds means you receive less than the stated principal; a financed fee increases the balance; and a fee deducted from Bitcoin collateral still reduces your economic value even if it does not reduce cash proceeds on funding day.
Lender pages illustrate why the fee basis and contract matter; the following are dated, lender-specific examples, not market-wide terms or directly comparable offers.

| Example | What the cited page says | Date or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Lantern Finance | Its rates page says the starting APR includes base interest plus a 2% upfront fee. It says rates and availability can depend on eligibility, jurisdiction, collateral, LTV, and agreement. | Page last updated June 26, 2026; starting APR and availability are not a personalized offer. |
| BTCBacked | Lists a one-time platform fee of 1.5% per year of the loan term, deducted from Bitcoin collateral, and a 5% liquidation fee if liquidation applies. | Undated page accessed October 4, 2026. |
| APX Lending | Says its line of credit has no origination, early-prepayment, or unused-line fee, and that interest is its only cost. The page also says accrued interest is included in real-time LTV. | Terms depend on the specific line of credit and agreement. |
| Pledg | Its India pilot page describes an all-inclusive APR in the Key Fact Statement, a 70% margin-call level, and an 80% liquidation level. | Pilot terms identified as of July 2026; applies to that pilot, not all markets or loans. |
These examples cannot be ranked fairly without matching the loan amount, term, currency, eligibility, payment structure, fee base, and jurisdiction. Verify the figures and fee treatment in the agreement for the offer you are considering.

Before borrowing, find the contract’s starting LTV, margin-call trigger, time allowed to respond, acceptable ways to cure the call, liquidation threshold, amount of collateral that may be sold, and any liquidation fee. Onramp’s help page for its partner Arch describes up to 50% initial LTV, a margin call at 70%, and possible partial liquidation at 80%; Pledg’s India pilot describes 70% and 80% margin-call and liquidation levels. These are examples, not safe universal thresholds.
Simplified liquidation-price estimate
For fixed debt, with no fees or accrued interest, a rough estimate is:
Liquidation BTC price ≈ debt ÷ (liquidation LTV × BTC units pledged)

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use liquidation LTV as a decimal in this equation—for example, 80% as 0.80. The result is only a simplified estimate. A lender may use a different formula, include accrued charges, rely on a specified price source, or provide cure procedures that affect what happens before collateral is sold. Check the agreement rather than treating the estimate as a prediction of the actual liquidation price.
