If the files do not exist yet, estimate their size by multiplying the combined video and audio bitrate by the total duration of unique content, then dividing by eight. Repeating the playlist does not require another copy of its files.
Start with the files you already have
If your videos are encoded, their listed file sizes give the most direct estimate. Add each distinct file once; do not count a file again because it will play again in the loop. Make sure the total reflects all files in the playlist, not just the videos currently queued.

For a local library, compare the total with the free space on the destination drive. If you keep source files or backups separately, include those copies in your capacity planning. An external hard drive for video files may be useful for retaining a local library; choose its capacity after measuring your files and allowing for future additions.
Estimate storage when the files are not encoded
For a constant combined bitrate, use this formula:
Estimated bytes = (video bitrate in bits per second + audio bitrate in bits per second) × duration in seconds ÷ 8

For several videos, use the sum of the durations of the distinct files. If video and audio are already expressed as a combined bitrate, use that rate once rather than adding the audio again.
Quick estimate in decimal GB
Decimal GB ≈ combined Mbps × hours × 0.45
At a sustained combined rate of 1 Mbps, an hour is about 0.45 decimal GB. In binary units, the same data is about 0.419 GiB. Drive manufacturers commonly label capacity in decimal units, while operating systems may show capacity using decimal or binary units; state which convention you are using when comparing estimates.

Example using YouTube upload recommendations
YouTube’s official upload encoding guidance recommends 8 Mbps video for 1080p SDR at 24, 25 or 30 fps and 384 kbps for stereo audio. Together, those rates are 8.384 Mbps. At a constant combined rate, that works out to about 3.77 decimal GB per hour, or about 90.55 decimal GB for 24 hours of unique content.

This is an arithmetic estimate from YouTube’s recommended upload rates, not a measurement or promised file size. YouTube supports variable bitrate and does not require a bitrate limit, so an actual file can be larger or smaller depending on its encoding and content.

These values are calculations from the stated rates and a 24-hour duration, not separate measurements or a YouTube storage table. If you have the files, add their actual sizes instead.
Choose bitrate inputs that match the video
YouTube’s upload recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate and whether the video is SDR or HDR. The following SDR video rates and audio rates are recommendations in YouTube’s official guidance, not requirements for every source file or claims about how much storage a platform uses after processing.

YouTube lists audio recommendations of 128 kbps for mono, 384 kbps for stereo and 512 kbps for 5.1. Add the relevant audio rate to the video rate when calculating separate components. For HDR formats other than the example above, check the current guidance rather than applying the SDR figures.
Keep comparisons consistent: use the same resolution, frame rate, SDR or HDR format, audio configuration and bitrate basis. A variable-bitrate file’s size depends on the content; a calm, static scene and a visually complex one need not occupy equal space at the same nominal settings. YouTube’s guidance also says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”

Refine the estimate before encoding a large library
- List unique videos and durations. Count each distinct file once, even if the playlist will repeat it throughout the day.
- For existing files, total their actual sizes. This is preferable to inferring size from a nominal bitrate.
- For files not yet encoded, choose matching video and audio rates. Apply the formula to the total duration of unique content.
- Test a representative sample. Export a short sample from representative footage and measure its actual size. Use its average size per minute to refine the estimate for similar content.
- Allow room for changes. Leave extra capacity for future additions and any working or backup copies; the right amount depends on your plans, not on a universal safety-margin standard.
- Check the destination’s limit. Compare your total with local free space or a hosted service’s current storage allowance and terms before relying on it.
What looping changes—and what it does not
A 24/7 loop replays the same library, so storage for the playlist is based on one copy of each distinct file. For example, four unique one-hour videos require storage for those four files, not for every time they repeat during a day. If you also create a separate recording of the continuous 24-hour stream, estimate that recording as a different 24-hour file.
