Thus, 18% of 225 is 225 × 0.18 = 40.5. The same approach handles tips and discounts on any phone, even when its percent button behaves differently from another calculator. Use the built-in Calculator for exact cents, mental benchmarks for a fast estimate, and Siri or another voice assistant when speaking is more convenient.
Start with the three formulas you actually need
Most percentage questions on a phone are one of three tasks. Convert the rate to a decimal (move the decimal point two places left), then enter the matching expression.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Task | Formula | What to enter for a rate of r% |
|---|---|---|
| Find a percentage of a number | amount = base × rate | base × (r ÷ 100) |
| Find a discount and sale price | savings = original price × rate sale price = original price − savings |
price × (r ÷ 100), then subtract; or use price × (1 − r ÷ 100) |
| Calculate a tip and total | tip = bill × rate total = bill + tip |
bill × (r ÷ 100), then add |
Writing the decimal rate avoids ambiguity. It also works in a basic calculator that has no percent key, and it gives you a visible expression you can check before accepting the result.
Choose the fastest phone method for the job
The right method depends on whether you need an estimate, exact cents, or extra functions such as splitting a bill.

Calculate a percentage of a number
Reliable decimal method
- Identify the base number and the percentage. For example, the base is 225 and the rate is 18%.
- Convert 18% to 0.18 by dividing by 100.
- Enter
225 × 0.18in the calculator. - Read the result: 40.5.
This works for prices, storage capacity, battery change, exam scores, tax estimates, or any other quantity where you are asking “what is this percentage of that number?”
Mental check for 18% of 225
Break 18% into familiar pieces. Ten percent of 225 is 22.5, five percent is half of that (11.25), and three percent is 6.75. Adding 22.5 + 11.25 + 6.75 gives 40.5, matching the calculator. This check is useful when you want to catch a misplaced decimal without re-entering the entire expression.
When the answer should be a whole number
Percentages do not always produce whole units. Keep the full result during the calculation, then round only at the point the item requires it. For money, use two decimal places; for people or physical items, follow the rule of the situation rather than silently rounding a fractional person or item.
Work out a tip, total, and equal shares
Exact calculator procedure
Suppose a bill is $48 and you want to illustrate a 20% tip:
- Calculate the tip with
48 × 0.20. The result is $9.60. - Add the tip to the bill:
48 + 9.60equals $57.60. - For four equal shares, divide the total:
57.60 ÷ 4equals $14.40 per person.
Keep the bill, tip, total, and per-person amount as separate values while you work. That makes it clear whether someone is asking for the gratuity alone or the amount to pay.

Tip-rate and tax choices are local decisions
The arithmetic is universal, but the appropriate rate and the base amount are not. Depending on your location and preference, you may calculate a tip from the pre-tax bill or the post-tax total. Decide which amount you are using before entering it. The examples here are illustrative, not a universal tipping rule.

Unequal payments
If people ordered different items, do not divide the final total equally. Calculate each person’s share from the items they consumed, then decide how to allocate tax and tip. A calculator can perform each percentage, but it cannot know your group’s agreement about shared dishes, alcohol, or rounding differences.
Calculate a discount and the final sale price
Show both the savings and what you pay
For an $80 item at 25% off:
- Convert 25% to 0.25.
- Find the savings:
80 × 0.25equals $20. - Subtract the savings:
80 − 20equals a $60 sale price.
Showing the savings separately helps you verify a shelf label and explain the deal to someone else.
One-step sale-price entry
A 25% discount leaves 75% of the original price. Enter 80 × 0.75 to get $60 directly. In general, multiply by 1 − discount rate; for a 15% discount, that multiplier is 0.85.
Check whether a displayed price is really discounted
If a store shows an original and sale price, calculate the difference first, then divide the difference by the original price. For example, a drop from $80 to $60 is $20; 20 ÷ 80 = 0.25, or 25%. This is the reverse of calculating the sale price and can expose a rounded or incorrectly labelled percentage.

Handle successive discounts correctly
Two discounts applied one after another are not normally added as if they were one rate. Each discount applies to the price that remains.

For 20% off followed by another 10% off, the first multiplier is 0.80 and the second is 0.90. Enter 0.80 × 0.90 to get 0.72. The customer pays 72% of the original price, so the combined reduction is 28%, not 30%.
For a $100 item, that means $80 after the first reduction and $72 after the second. Use the same multiplication method for three or more reductions: multiply all of the “price left” multipliers in order.
Use an iPhone Calculator or Siri
Calculator: use decimals when you need predictable behavior
Open the Calculator app and enter the explicit expression, such as 225 × 0.18 for 18% of 225 or 80 × (1 − 0.25) for a 25% discount. The decimal form is easier to audit and does not depend on how a particular app interprets its percent key.
What Apple documents about the percent key
Apple’s iPhone Calculator guide documents percentage addition. Its example is 100 + 15% = 115; repeating the operation with 150 gives 172.5. Those are documented behaviors in Apple’s calculator, not evidence that every calculator app uses the same sequence. If your displayed expression or answer surprises you, clear it and enter the decimal formula instead.
Ask Siri a complete question
Apple Support’s iPhone Calculator guide gives this example: “Siri: Ask Siri something like, ‘What’s 18 percent of 225?’” Speak the base number and rate together, then check the result on screen before using it in a payment. Voice recognition can mishear a decimal, a currency amount, or a noisy restaurant request.
Use Android without assuming one universal button sequence
Android calculators differ by manufacturer, app version, and screen layout. There is no single button sequence established for every Android phone. Some calculators show a percent key; others expect you to type the decimal rate or use an expanded expression.

- Open the calculator and look at the complete displayed expression, not just the final number.
- For a percentage of a number, enter
base × decimal rate, such as225 × 0.18. - For a discount, enter
price × (1 − decimal rate), such as80 × (1 − 0.25), or calculate savings separately and subtract. - For a tip, calculate the tip first, then add it to the bill.
- Before paying, repeat the calculation with the decimal method if the percent key produces an unexpected result.
On a phone with a voice assistant, you can ask the same complete natural-language question used on an iPhone, but verify that the assistant understood the rate and base correctly.

10%, 5%, 15%, and 20%
- 10%: move the decimal point one place left, or divide by 10.
- 5%: take half of the 10% amount.
- 15%: add the 10% and 5% amounts.
- 20%: double the 10% amount.
On a $48 bill, 10% is $4.80, so 20% is $9.60. On a $70 item, 10% is $7 and 5% is $3.50, so 15% is $10.50. These shortcuts are exact when you perform the small additions exactly; they are estimates when you round intermediate values for speed.
Build less familiar rates from familiar ones
Combine the benchmarks rather than trying to memorize every percentage. For 18%, use 20% minus 2%; for 12%, use 10% plus 2%. If the result is important to the cent, use the mental result as a reasonableness check and let the calculator produce the final figure.
Fraction and decimal benchmarks
Educational percentage guidance commonly recommends using familiar fractions or decimal benchmarks to estimate. For example, 25% is one quarter, 50% is one half, and 75% is three quarters. A restaurant tip can be estimated by starting with 10% and adding or subtracting a convenient portion. Treat these as estimates unless the numbers divide cleanly.
Round money only at the right time
Keep extra decimal places while calculating a tip, discount, tax, or group split, then round the amount each person actually pays to the smallest currency unit. Rounding the tip before adding it can create a one-cent difference; rounding each person’s share separately can also leave a remainder. Decide who pays that remainder rather than hiding it in an unexplained adjustment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When a store or restaurant has already rounded a tax or fee, use the printed amount as the authoritative charge and use your percentage calculation as a check. A mathematically exact percentage may not match a merchant’s legally or operationally rounded total.
Best Value
Troubleshoot an unexpected answer
The result is 100 times too large or too small
You probably entered 18 instead of 0.18, or divided by 100 twice. Clear the expression and use base × (percentage ÷ 100). For 18% of 225, the expected scale is around 18% of 225, so a result near 4,050 or 0.405 signals a misplaced decimal.
A percent key gives a different result than expected
Percent keys can apply the rate to the previous number, the running total, or the next operation depending on the calculator. Do not guess which rule is active. Read the displayed expression, test it with a simple case such as 100 plus 15%, and then use the explicit decimal expression for the real calculation.
The sale price looks higher than the original
Check whether you added the discount instead of subtracting it. A discount uses the remaining multiplier, 1 − rate; a surcharge or markup uses 1 + rate. Keep those two operations separate when reviewing a receipt.
The group split does not add back to the total
Look for rounding at two stages: the tip or discount may have been rounded, and each person’s share may have been rounded again. Recalculate from the unrounded total, divide by the number of people, and assign any leftover cent according to your group’s agreement.
Decide whether a dedicated app is worthwhile
The built-in calculator is sufficient when you need one transparent expression. A dedicated app may save time when you repeatedly enter a bill, tip rate, number of diners, or discount and want the app to display several outputs at once.
- Choose the built-in tool when privacy, no installation, and visible arithmetic matter most.
- Choose voice input when your hands are occupied or typing is difficult, but confirm the recognized numbers.
- Consider a dedicated app only after checking whether it shows the original price, savings, final price, tip, total, and per-person amount separately.
- Review permissions and offline behavior before entering financial information. Store listings describe advertised functions; they do not establish accuracy, privacy, or performance across devices.
A compact phone-ready checklist
- Identify the base amount and the percentage.
- Convert the percentage to a decimal by dividing by 100.
- Multiply for a percentage, multiply then subtract for a discount, or multiply then add for a tip.
- For successive discounts, multiply the remaining-price factors in sequence.
- Divide the final total for equal shares.
- Keep full precision until the currency-rounding step.
- Use a mental 10% or 5% check to catch a decimal error.
- If a percent key behaves unexpectedly, replace it with the explicit decimal expression.
With those steps, the calculation is the same on an iPhone, an Android phone, or a basic calculator: only the buttons and voice interface change.
