How to Calculate Payment Processing Fees and Net Freelance Income

To find what you keep from an invoice, subtract the processor’s fee from the amount charged. For a percentage-plus-fixed fee, that is payout = gross charge − (gross charge × rate + fixed fee). To set a charge that leaves a target payout, use gross charge = (target payout + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate). These figures show your payout after processing—not your business profit or after-tax income.

Calculate the processing fee and payout

Use three values from the fee schedule that applies to your account:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • G: the gross amount charged to the client.
  • r: the percentage fee written as a decimal. For example, 2.9% is 0.029.
  • f: the fixed fee per transaction in the currency received.

For a fee made up of a percentage plus a fixed amount:

Processing fee = G × r + f

Payout after processing = G − (G × r + f)

For example, if a hypothetical transaction has a 2.9% rate and a $0.30 fixed fee, the fee on a $100 charge is $100 × 0.029 + $0.30 = $3.20. The payout is $100 − $3.20 = $96.80, before any other costs.

Example: a $100 online card payment using Square’s US rate

Square’s US pricing page, accessed October 4, 2026, displayed an online card rate of 2.9% + $0.30 on two plans. At that rate, a $100 charge produces a $3.20 processing fee and a $96.80 payout before other costs. This is an illustration of those displayed plans, not a universal Square rate or a rate for every account. Check Square’s US processing fees and pricing.

Work backward from a target payout

If the same percentage-plus-fixed fee applies to the whole charge, rearrange the payout equation to solve for the gross amount:

G = (N + f) ÷ (1 − r)

Here, N is the payout you want after processing. The fixed fee must be added to the target first, then the result divided by one minus the percentage rate expressed as a decimal.

Example: target a $100 payout

At 2.9% + $0.30, the calculation is ($100 + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029), or about $103.40. Since the processor charges in currency increments, round to the currency’s precision and check the fee and resulting payout using the rounded charge. This formula does not account for additional charges that may apply.

Use the rate for the actual payment and account

There is no single rate that applies to every freelancer or transaction. The applicable fee can depend on the provider, market, currency, plan, payment method, channel, and transaction type. Square’s US pricing page accessed October 4, 2026, displayed online rates of 2.9% + $0.30 on two plans and 3.3% + $0.30 on another. Its displayed in-person tap, dip, or swipe rates varied by plan: 2.4% + $0.15, 2.5% + $0.15, and 2.6% + $0.15. Square’s page lists its plan and payment-channel rates.

PayPal’s US merchant-fee page, last updated October 1, 2026, lists several invoice payment categories with different fee structures. These are US schedule examples, not worldwide rates:

Account for other charges and rounding

The reverse formula assumes the same percentage-plus-fixed fee applies to the entire charge. If your transaction has international, currency-conversion, platform, refund, or other charges, model them separately using your account’s actual terms. After calculating a gross amount, round it to the currency’s precision and recalculate the fee on that rounded amount to check whether it meets the target.

“Net after fees” is not profit or take-home pay

The formula gives the payout after processing fees. It does not subtract your other business expenses or determine your personal tax. A processor’s fee schedule cannot establish a universal tax rate or a complete calculation of freelance take-home income.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Square says its processing fees are deducted before funds are transferred to a linked bank account, and that the fee is taken from the transaction total, including tax and tip. That describes Square’s fee handling; check your own provider’s documentation for its treatment of your transactions. Read Square’s support explanation of fees.

Verify the fee schedule before quoting a client

Before using either formula, confirm the live rate for your provider, account, market, currency, plan, payment channel, and transaction type. Then calculate the fee on the expected charge—or gross up the payout you need—and check the result after currency rounding. Rates and terms can change.
