To calculate GST, first confirm the applicable rate and the amount it applies to. For a taxable pre-tax price, multiply the price by the rate; for a tax-inclusive total, use the tax fraction to separate the GST from the total. The rate and tax treatment depend on the country, the item or service, and the transaction. The India-specific guidance below is not a universal GST rule; readers elsewhere should use their own tax authority’s rate lookup.
What you need to know before calculating GST
The formula calculates tax only after you establish the applicable rate and taxable value. It does not determine whether a purchase is taxable, exempt, zero-rated, covered by a special scheme, or classified at a particular rate. Identify the country, the product or service and its classification, the transaction details, and the purchase date before relying on a rate.

For India, the Government Services Portal’s GST service provides access to a GST rate list. The portal says inter-state supplies use IGST, while intra-state supplies use CGST and SGST or UTGST. That distinction does not, by itself, establish the rate for a particular item. The page reports an update date of April 30, 2026; check the official source again because rates and classifications can change.

Let P be the taxable value before GST and r the applicable GST rate written as a decimal. The arithmetic is:
#1 Best Overall
- 1) Instant GST Calculations - Quickly adds and subtracts GST at 5%, 12%, 18%, 28%.
- 2)Built-in History Log – Automatically records and displays past calculations for easy tracking.
- 3)Mobile Responsive Design – Optimized for smooth use on both smartphones and desktops.
- 4)Classic Calculator Layout – Familiar button arrangement similar to physical GST calculators.
- 5) Basic Math Operations – Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with ease.
- GST amount: P × r
- Total including GST: P × (1 + r)
For example, if a taxable value is 1,000 currency units and the confirmed rate is 10%, then GST is 1,000 × 0.10 = 100, and the total is 1,100. This illustrates the arithmetic only; it does not assert that 10% applies to a particular purchase or jurisdiction.
Indian e-invoice validation guidance describes tax calculation from taxable value and rate. For the relevant tax components, it presents CGST and SGST at half the rate in the stated formula, and IGST at the stated rate. Apply the component appropriate to the transaction rather than assuming every purchase uses the same tax type. See the official e-invoice validation guidance.

How to find GST inside a tax-inclusive price
If the total already includes GST, dividing by the rate alone will not extract the tax. For a rate R expressed as a percentage:
- GST included: total × R ÷ (100 + R)
- Pre-tax value: total ÷ (1 + R ÷ 100)
For example, Singapore’s Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) illustrates the method using a total of $10,000 and Singapore’s 9% rate: $10,000 × 9/109 = $825.69 GST, leaving $9,174.31 before tax. This is an IRAS example, not an Indian rate or a rate to apply in other countries. See IRAS guidance on prices inclusive of GST.

How to check the GST on an Indian purchase invoice
- Confirm the document and transaction treatment. A tax invoice, bill of supply, and other applicable documents may show different tax details. CBIC notes that exempt supplies and composition-scheme cases use a bill of supply rather than a tax invoice with a GST rate and tax amount.
- Check the item or service description and taxable value. The description and value are necessary to compare the invoice with the applicable rate and calculate the tax.
- Verify the rate against the official lookup. Use the Government Services Portal’s GST rate service and confirm that the classification and transaction facts match the purchase.
- Check the tax type and arithmetic. Compare the stated rate and tax amount with the taxable value and the applicable tax components. For an Indian transaction, consider whether the supply is inter-state or intra-state.
CBIC’s sectoral FAQ on GST lists supplier and recipient details where applicable, invoice number and date, description, value, rate, and amount of tax among invoice details. The absence of a separately stated GST amount alone does not prove an invoice is wrong: the treatment and document type matter.

Before concluding that the GST is incorrect, compare like with like. The quote may be tax-exclusive while the receipt is tax-inclusive; the product classification or applicable rate may differ from an assumption; Indian inter-state and intra-state supplies use different tax components; or the document may be a bill of supply rather than a tax invoice. Check these distinctions against the actual transaction and the relevant official guidance.
