How to Calculate GST and Check the Correct Rate in India

To calculate Indian GST, multiply the taxable value by the applicable rate and divide by 100. To find that rate, first identify the product or service’s exact classification and then verify the full entry against current official notifications. There is no single GST rate for an unspecified item.

How to calculate GST on a taxable value

Use these formulas once you have confirmed both the taxable value and the applicable rate:

  • GST amount: taxable value × GST rate ÷ 100
  • Total including GST: taxable value + GST amount

For example, at an assumed rate of 18% on a taxable value of ₹1,000, GST is ₹180 and the total is ₹1,180. This illustrates the arithmetic only; it does not mean 18% applies to any particular product or service.

When the quoted amount already includes GST

If one rate applies throughout and the gross amount is tax-inclusive, extract the tax with this formula:

  • Many national and regional tax rates included
  • Embedded GST: gross amount × rate ÷ (100 + rate)
  • Taxable value: gross amount ÷ (1 + rate/100)

For a tax-inclusive amount of ₹1,180 at an assumed 18% rate, the embedded GST is ₹180 and the taxable value is ₹1,000. This extraction assumes one rate and no other complications in the amount.

Confirm the taxable value before calculating

The amount shown on a price tag or quotation is not necessarily the taxable value. Under section 15 of the CGST Act, the value of supply is generally the transaction value when the statutory conditions are met. The rules can require additions, including certain incidental expenses and specified amounts the recipient pays on the supplier’s behalf. Discounts, related-party transactions, non-monetary consideration, reimbursements, and composite or mixed supplies can also affect how a transaction is valued or classified. See the CBIC explanation of CGST Act section 15.

How to verify the correct GST rate

  1. Describe the exact supply. Note what the item or service is, its composition or use where relevant, packaging or label details where relevant, and the transaction date. Rate entries can depend on these facts.
  2. Find its classification. Identify the relevant HSN heading for goods or SAC/accounting classification for services. Read the entire rate entry, including conditions, exclusions, and notes—not just a percentage in a search result. See the CBIC HSN/SAC guidance.
  3. Check official rate and amendment sources. Start with the CBIC GST goods and services rate schedule, then check the CBIC Tax Information portal for relevant current notifications or clarifications. The rate schedule includes historical notification references; the portal’s retrieved information lists 2026 notifications and says its content is being updated. A schedule entry by itself may therefore not establish the rate currently in force for a transaction.
  4. Determine the tax type. In ordinary intra-State supplies, CGST and SGST or UTGST generally apply; in inter-State supplies, IGST generally applies. The result depends on statutory place-of-supply rules and exceptions, not simply on the buyer’s billing address. Consult CGST Act section 9, IGST Act section 5, and IGST Act section 8.
  5. Reconcile the invoice. Check the description and classification, taxable value, rate, tax amount, place of supply where relevant, and whether reverse charge applies. The CBIC invoice rules set out relevant invoice particulars.
  6. Get help if classification is uncertain. If multiple headings appear plausible or an exclusion or exemption may apply, verify the current notification and seek qualified tax advice for a consequential or disputed transaction.

What to compare when two rate entries seem possible

A bare percentage comparison can miss the details that determine the treatment. Compare the actual transaction against each candidate entry:

What a rate lookup cannot determine without transaction details

No specific rate can be confirmed without knowing the product or service, relevant transaction facts and date, and, where available, its HSN or SAC classification. Rates and conditions can change, so verify the entry against applicable amendments for the transaction date rather than relying on a generic percentage or an old reference.
