To estimate the cash needed for an agricultural futures position, calculate the mark-to-market gain or loss: price change in the contract’s quoted units × contract quantity × number of contracts. Add gains or subtract losses from account equity, then compare that equity with the contract’s maintenance margin. If equity falls below maintenance, the applicable margin framework requires a deposit that restores the account to the stated initial-margin level; your broker’s notice, deadline, house margin and liquidation rules control the practical details.
Margin is collateral (often called a performance bond), not a purchase deposit, fee or limit on loss. A futures position can lose more than the amount initially posted, so the calculation is both a funding exercise and a risk test.

What futures margin means in an agricultural account
A futures contract gives both sides an obligation tied to an underlying commodity or spread. The exchange clearing system requires collateral to support that obligation. CME Group describes this collateral as a performance bond. You do not normally pay the contract’s full notional value when opening the position; you post the required margin instead.

- Initial margin: the collateral required to establish the position.
- Maintenance margin: the minimum equity level for keeping the position open under the exchange or clearing framework.
CME’s general explanation is: “If subsequently margin equity falls below maintenance margin, a call must be issued to bring the account up to initial margin.” That is an exchange-level framework. A customer’s broker can require more collateral, set different operational procedures, or close a position under the customer agreement.

Margin does not cap your loss. Daily mark-to-market debits can consume the deposit and then require additional cash. If the market moves sharply, the amount needed can exceed the original initial margin.
The core calculation
For a straightforward outright futures position, define:
ΔP= the adverse price move in the contract’s quoted units;Q= the quantity represented by one contract, such as metric tons;N= the number of contracts;L= the loss from the move.
Use this estimate:
L = |ΔP| × Q × N
The absolute value gives the size of the loss. Direction determines whether a price move is adverse:

For a single adverse move with no other activity, compare the resulting equity with maintenance margin. If it is below maintenance, calculate the amount required under the applicable call rule. Under CME’s stated general framework, the target is initial margin, although a broker’s notice may specify a different immediate funding amount or additional house requirement.
Step-by-step method before opening or holding a position
- Identify the exact instrument. Record the exchange, commodity, contract code, delivery month, quote units and contract quantity. “Corn futures” or “soybean futures” is not specific enough because requirements can differ by contract month.
- Obtain current initial and maintenance requirements. Use the exchange’s current schedule for that product and month, then ask the broker whether a house margin applies. Record the date and whether the figures are for the relevant customer risk category.
- Record the position direction and size. Write down long or short, entry price, number of contracts and quantity per contract. For a spread, record both legs and the spread quote.
- Translate a price move into cash. Multiply the adverse move by the contract quantity and number of contracts. Keep the quote units in the calculation; a move quoted in cents, dollars per bushel or dollars per metric ton cannot be mixed without conversion.
- Apply mark-to-market changes. Subtract losses and add gains to the account equity. Include any variation payment, realized transaction cost or other account debit shown by the broker.
- Test the maintenance threshold. If equity is at or above maintenance, the position remains above that threshold at that moment. If it is below, the account is under the call threshold.
- Determine the funding target and deadline from the notice. The general CME framework points to restoring initial margin, but the broker’s customer agreement controls the amount requested, acceptable funding method, deadline and liquidation authority.
- Stress the position again. Calculate additional losses for plausible adverse moves and keep liquidity beyond the minimum requirement. A balance that barely meets maintenance can fall below it after the next price change.
Worked agricultural spread example
The following figures come from CME Group’s 2026 illustration of a soybean-oil spread. They are an arithmetic example, not a current universal rate for soybean oil, corn, wheat or any other agricultural contract.
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Position | Short spread |
| Contracts and represented quantity | 10 contracts representing 100 metric tons |
| Entry spread price | −$300 per metric ton |
| Later spread price | −$230 per metric ton |
| Adverse move for the short | $70 per metric ton (the spread narrowed) |
| Initial margin | $9,350 |
| Maintenance margin | $8,500 |
Because the short position was hurt by a $70-per-metric-ton move, the variation loss is:

$70 × 100 metric tons = $7,000
If the account began with $9,350 and no other cash movements occurred, the balance after that loss is:

$9,350 − $7,000 = $2,350
The example’s table shows $6,150 as the amount needed to bring $2,350 back to its stated $8,500 maintenance figure:
$8,500 − $2,350 = $6,150
That arithmetic explains the table, but it should not be mistaken for a universal call target. CME’s separate general framework says a call brings equity up to initial margin. Using the example’s $9,350 initial margin, the difference from $2,350 would be $7,000. Which amount your broker demands, and when it must be paid, depends on the broker’s current rules and notice. Read the call rather than assuming that an exchange illustration is your account instruction.
Checking the direction
If the same quantity were long rather than short, an adverse $70-per-metric-ton move would be a decline in the spread price instead of a rise or narrowing against a short. The cash calculation still uses the adverse move multiplied by quantity; only the sign and market direction change.
Why agricultural margin rates change
CME states that “Performance bond requirements vary by product and market volatility.” Agricultural requirements can therefore change when volatility, liquidity or other risk measures change. The exchange publishes advisories and historical margin files, and its schedules show requirements by contract month.

A dated notice is not a perpetual quote. An agriculture notice reviewed for this topic stated that its rates became effective after the close of business on August 14, 2026. That date illustrates why a number must be tied to an effective date. A corn-margin page displayed an update of October 6, 2026 and showed maintenance values by delivery month and volatility-scan percentages, but displayed search values should not be treated as a live quote without checking the official page and the exact contract.
Before relying on any figure, verify:
- the exchange and contract family;
- the delivery month;
- initial versus maintenance margin;
- the effective date and time of the schedule;
- whether the rate is for the applicable customer category, such as a hedging or non-hedging classification;
- whether the broker adds a house margin or concentration charge.
Outright futures, spreads and portfolios are not interchangeable
Outright contract
For an outright long or short, the price-change formula is usually a useful first estimate. It still depends on the correct contract multiplier and quote convention. A one-cent move has a very different cash value in a contract quoted per bushel than in one quoted per metric ton.
Calendar spread
A calendar spread combines different delivery months. The legs may offset some risk, but the months do not move identically. CME notes that basis risk remains between futures months. Calculate the change in the spread quote for a quick variation estimate, then use the exchange and broker’s spread treatment for the actual margin requirement.
Intercommodity spread
An intercommodity spread links different products, such as related agricultural markets. The quantity relationship and quote units must be aligned before multiplying. A simple outright multiplication can overstate or understate the portfolio result if offsets, conversion factors or leg-specific rules apply.

Options and portfolios
Options and portfolios can include scan risk, offsets and other risk-array inputs that are not visible in a single price-change formula. CME points to SPAN-style portfolio calculations for futures and options margin. Use the broker’s risk report or the applicable exchange methodology rather than assuming that each leg’s full outright margin simply adds together.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to handle a margin call
- Authenticate the notice. Use the broker’s normal account portal or known contact channel. Confirm the affected account, contract, quantity, current equity, maintenance threshold, requested amount and deadline.
- Recalculate the displayed loss. Recreate the price move with the correct quote units and contract quantity. Include all contracts and both legs of a spread. Differences can arise from later mark-to-market changes or other account activity.
- Ask for the required target. Confirm whether the broker wants equity restored to exchange initial margin, a higher house margin, or another amount stated in the customer agreement.
- Confirm acceptable funding and timing. Ask which payment methods are credited in time and whether the deadline is based on receipt, initiation or a particular trading-session cutoff. There is no single universal broker deadline established for all agricultural accounts.
- Decide whether to fund, reduce or close. Funding preserves the position but increases cash at risk. Reducing or closing realizes the loss and may avoid further exposure, but execution prices can move while the order is placed.
- Document the action. Keep the notice, payment confirmation, order records and updated equity statement. If the broker liquidates under the agreement, the resulting price and any remaining deficit still belong to the account.
Do not wait for a position to return to entry price. A margin call is a current collateral requirement, not a forecast that the market will reverse. If the call is not met within the broker’s required timeframe, the broker may close the position, as described in CME’s agricultural example. The exact authority and timing come from your agreement.
Comparing two agricultural contracts or positions
A lower posted margin does not automatically mean a safer or cheaper position. Compare the items below at the same timestamp and for the same account classification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Comparison point | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Margin thresholds | What are current initial and maintenance amounts, and when did they become effective? |
| Contract economics | What quantity does one contract represent, and what are the quote units and minimum tick value? |
| Price risk | How much cash does a one-tick, one-cent or one-dollar move create for the full position? |
| Volatility | Has the exchange issued a recent volatility-related advisory? |
| Structure | Is this an outright, calendar spread, intercommodity spread, option or portfolio? |
| Offsets and basis | Does the exchange methodology recognize offsets, and what residual basis risk remains? |
| Broker terms | Does the broker impose house margin, concentration limits or different liquidation rules? |
| Funding operations | How are calls delivered, what methods are accepted and when are funds credited? |
For a meaningful comparison, calculate the cash loss from the same adverse percentage or price move, not just the two margin deposits. A contract with a smaller initial requirement can still create a larger loss per tick or require more liquidity during a volatile session.
Practical liquidity plan
- Keep a buffer above maintenance. Maintenance is a trigger threshold, not a recommended account balance.
- Model several adverse moves. Use the contract’s tick value and quantity to estimate the cash impact of successive moves.
- Separate trading capital from emergency cash. A call can arrive while transfers are delayed or markets are moving quickly.
- Review exposure after every contract or month change. A roll to a new delivery month can carry a different requirement and different liquidity.
- Monitor notices and account equity. Do not rely solely on a daily statement if the broker provides intraday alerts or risk reports.
- Recheck requirements before adding size. Exchange advisories and house policies can change while an existing position is open.
Common calculation errors
- Using the commodity’s cash price instead of the futures quote. Margin loss is based on the futures position and its contract multiplier.
- Forgetting the number of contracts. A per-contract loss must be multiplied by the full position size.
- Reversing long and short direction. State explicitly whether an up or down move is adverse.
- Mixing units. Convert cents, dollars, bushels, pounds or metric tons consistently before multiplying.
- Treating initial margin as the maximum loss. It is collateral, not an insurance limit.
- Assuming maintenance equals the call deposit. The exchange framework may target initial margin, while a broker notice can include house requirements or other terms.
- Applying outright math to a portfolio. Spreads and options can receive offsets, but they also carry basis or model risk.
- Using an undated rate. Requirements are product-, month- and volatility-sensitive; record the effective date.
Questions to settle with your broker
Before entering an agricultural futures position, ask for written answers to these operational questions:
- What are the current exchange initial and maintenance margins for this exact contract month?
- What additional house margin or concentration requirement applies to my account?
- When is equity marked and how are variation debits and credits posted?
- How will a margin call be delivered, and who is authorized to contact me?
- What is the deadline, and must funds be received or merely sent by that time?
- Which payment methods are accepted for a time-critical call?
- Can the broker liquidate without waiting for my instruction, and how is the order selected?
- How are calendar spreads, intercommodity spreads, options and offsets margined?
These answers are account-specific. Neither an exchange illustration nor a generic calculator can replace the terms in your brokerage agreement.
