1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo calculate the EMI on a fixed-rate, reducing-balance SME loan, use the principal, monthly interest rate and number of monthly payments. Then estimate scheduled interest as total payments minus principal. The result is a planning estimate—not a lender quote—and it does not necessarily include fees or other charges.
How do I calculate business loan EMI?
For equal monthly instalments on a fixed-rate, fully amortising loan, use:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1)
- P is the principal actually financed.
- r is the monthly interest rate as a decimal. For an annual rate quoted as a percentage, calculate r = annual rate (%) ÷ 12 ÷ 100.
- n is the number of monthly instalments. For a tenure in years, multiply the number of years by 12.
If the monthly rate is zero, EMI is P ÷ n.
For a quick estimate, put the financed amount, monthly rate and number of payments into the formula or a loan EMI calculator. Confirm the inputs: a fee added to the loan balance increases the principal used in the calculation.

Each EMI covers interest on the outstanding principal, with the remainder reducing that principal. As the balance falls, subsequent interest is calculated on the smaller balance. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) explains this reducing-balance method and provides an amortisation example in its borrower FAQ.

How much total interest will I pay on my business loan?
When the loan has equal monthly instalments and the assumptions used for the EMI match the loan schedule, estimate scheduled interest with:
Total scheduled interest = (EMI × number of instalments) − principal

Worked example: RBI’s published illustration
The RBI FAQ gives an example of a 1,000,000 loan at a 15.00% annual interest rate over 120 monthly payments, with an EMI of 16,133.50. The FAQ does not state a publication year, and the figures are an illustration—not a current SME loan offer.

| Item | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Principal | 1,000,000 | RBI FAQ example |
| Annual interest rate | 15.00% | RBI FAQ example |
| Number of payments | 120 | RBI FAQ example |
| Monthly EMI | 16,133.50 | RBI FAQ example |
| Total scheduled payments | 1,936,020 | Derived by multiplying the published EMI by 120 |
| Total scheduled interest | 936,020 | Derived by subtracting the principal from derived total payments |
In that example, first-month interest is 12,500.00; the remainder of the EMI reduces principal, according to the RBI’s amortisation table.
Does a longer loan tenure reduce EMI?
Usually, yes: spreading repayment over more months reduces the monthly EMI, but increases total scheduled interest, assuming the same principal and rate. The RBI describes this tenure trade-off in its borrower FAQ. Compare both the monthly amount and the total repayment rather than choosing a loan by EMI alone.

What can change the estimate?
- Principal: A larger financed balance raises the EMI and scheduled interest when the rate and tenure are unchanged.
- Interest rate: A higher monthly rate raises the EMI and scheduled interest, all else equal.
- Rate type and resets: The fixed-rate formula is a snapshot using the rate entered. For a floating-rate loan, calculate a scenario at the current rate; a later reset may change the remaining schedule according to the contract.
- Payment and calculation conventions: Day-count rules, payment dates, disbursement timing and rounding can make the lender’s actual schedule differ from a simple monthly estimate.
- Fees added to the balance: If charges are financed, they may increase the principal on which the EMI is calculated.
Does EMI include processing fees?
Not necessarily. The EMI formula covers principal and interest under its assumptions; it does not include fees paid separately. A charge financed into the loan may affect the EMI by increasing the financed principal, while a charge paid separately affects the overall borrowing cost without necessarily appearing in the instalment.

For borrowers in India: check APR and the KFS
For Indian borrowers covered by the relevant RBI requirements, compare the lender’s disclosures as well as the EMI estimate. The Ministry of MSME handbook, Know Your Lender, Grow Your Business, describes APR as the annual cost of credit including interest and other charges. It also explains that a Key Facts Statement (KFS) includes an APR computation sheet and an amortisation schedule; applicable third-party service charges, such as insurance or legal charges, are part of APR and disclosed separately. See the handbook and the RBI Master Directions KFS material for the relevant disclosure context. Check the current KFS and actual loan terms rather than treating an EMI estimate as the full cost.

How to compare two SME loan offers
Compare offers using the same borrowing amount and repayment period, then review the complete disclosures. An online estimate may use different assumptions from the lender’s schedule.
- Monthly EMI and total scheduled interest
- APR and the fees or charges included in the lender’s disclosures
- Fixed or floating rate, including applicable reset terms
- Prepayment terms
- The KFS, sanction terms and amortisation schedule
Use the actual KFS and sanction terms for the offer you are considering. The monthly-rate conversion and tenure inputs used by a calculator are explained, for example, on the IDFC FIRST Bank Business Loan EMI Calculator; a calculator output remains an estimate unless it matches the lender’s terms and calculation conventions.
