1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShort answer: a genuine exchange of one digital asset for another, with no cash balancing payment (“soulte”), is generally subject to a tax deferral for an individual in France’s private digital-asset regime. You normally calculate the gain later, when you sell for euros, buy a non-digital good, pay for a service, or make an exchange that includes a soulte. That later gain is calculated for your entire digital-asset portfolio with the Form 2086 formula, not by assigning a separate gain to each stablecoin.
This guide uses the Direction générale des Finances publiques (DGFiP) Form 2086 notice for 2025 revenues (filed in 2026) and taxpayer guidance updated 17 July 2026. Rules and rates can change, so use the notice for the tax year you are filing.

1. First decide whether the stablecoin transaction is taxable now
A token-for-token swap with no soulte
Under the private individual regime, an exchange without soulte between digital assets benefits from tax deferral. In practical terms, swapping Stablecoin A for Stablecoin B does not, by itself, trigger an immediate capital-gains calculation when you receive no euros and no other non-digital consideration. The deferred treatment applies to the exchange itself; it does not erase the acquisition history that will be needed for a later taxable disposal.
The French tax authority states: “Toutefois, les opérations d’échange sans soulte d’actifs numériques bénéficient d’un sursis d’imposition.” The wording refers to an exchange of digital assets without a balancing payment. Keep evidence that the transaction was in fact asset-for-asset and that no cash amount was paid or received.

Transactions that can be taxable disposals
The deferral does not cover every transaction described as a “swap.” A disposal is generally within the taxable regime when digital assets are transferred:
- for legal tender, such as euros;
- for a good that is not itself a digital asset;
- for a service; or
- for another digital asset when a soulte is paid or received.
A trade in which you receive euros alongside another token is therefore not the same as a pure no-soulte crypto-to-crypto exchange. The cash balancing amount must be reflected in the disposal-price calculation. Likewise, using a stablecoin to pay a merchant or settle an invoice is not automatically protected by the no-soulte deferral simply because the payment is made with a token.
“Stablecoin” is not a legal classification by itself
The label stablecoin describes an intended price characteristic, not necessarily the instrument’s legal status. The private digital-asset rules apply only if the particular instrument qualifies as an “actif numérique” under the applicable definition. If a token has unusual contractual, technical or regulatory features, establish its classification separately rather than assuming that every asset marketed as a stablecoin receives identical treatment.

The calculation in this article is for an individual managing digital assets as private wealth. French guidance distinguishes that situation from activity carried out on a commercial basis, which can fall under bénéfices industriels et commerciaux (BIC), and activity conducted in conditions analogous to a professional activity, which can fall under bénéfices non commerciaux (BNC). Frequency, organisation, scale, financing and the way the activity is conducted can all matter.
Do not apply the Form 2086 portfolio formula mechanically if your activity may be professional-like. The filing, accounting and rate consequences can differ. If you trade as a business, provide liquidity as an organised activity, or operate with other facts suggesting a professional classification, obtain advice on the correct regime before preparing the return.
3. Use the Form 2086 portfolio formula
For a taxable disposal, the current Form 2086 notice gives the following gross gain-or-loss formula:
Gross gain or loss = disposal price − (total acquisition price × disposal price ÷ global portfolio value)
Recommended Free Tools
Rank #2
The DGFiP notice expresses it as: “Plus ou moins-value brute = Prix de cession – [Prix total d’acquisition x Prix de cession / Valeur globale du portefeuille].” The formula allocates part of the portfolio’s overall acquisition cost to the disposal according to the size of that disposal relative to the portfolio immediately before it.
Disposal price
The disposal price is the real amount or value received for the taxable disposal. It can include a soulte received and can be reduced by a soulte paid. Substantiated expenses borne for the disposal may also reduce the disposal-price term. Keep invoices, exchange statements and fee records so that any reduction is supportable.
There is an important limitation for fees: qualifying disposal expenses may reduce the disposal-price term, but fees do not reduce the disposal price used in the ratio of disposal price to total portfolio value. Applying a platform fee indiscriminately to every part of the formula can produce the wrong result. BOFiP also describes an administrative simplification for certain platform and network-validation fees associated with an otherwise taxable disposal; apply that simplification only when its conditions are met.
Total acquisition price
Total acquisition price is the qualifying acquisition cost of the digital-asset portfolio. It can include fiat amounts paid to acquire assets and certain values of goods or services given in exchange for digital assets. The amount is not a simple sum of the original cost of the token being sold.

The calculation is adjusted for earlier transactions. In particular, total acquisition price is reduced by capital fractions already used in prior taxable disposals and by qualifying prior soultes received. Prior deferred exchanges must be incorporated according to the Form 2086 and BOFiP rules rather than treated as a fresh market-value purchase of the token received.
Global portfolio value
Global portfolio value is the value of all relevant digital assets and related rights held by the taxpayer’s household immediately before the taxable disposal. The 2026 notice for 2025 revenues says the total covers assets held at an exchange, on a personal server, or in offline storage. Do not limit the denominator to the wallet or platform from which the sale was made.
Use a consistent, defensible valuation at the time of disposal and preserve the price source, timestamp and currency conversion used. If several platforms quote different prices, document the method used to select or reconcile the value rather than silently choosing a convenient figure.
4. Worked calculation
Simple numerical illustration
Assume, solely to show the arithmetic, that:
- the relevant total acquisition price of the portfolio is €10,000;
- the taxable disposal price is €2,000; and
- the global portfolio value immediately before disposal is €20,000.
Insert those figures into Form 2086’s formula:
€2,000 − (€10,000 × €2,000 ÷ €20,000) = €1,000 gross gain.
The €1,000 is a gross result before applying the year’s other same-nature digital-asset gains or losses and before the income-tax and social-levy calculation. It is a hypothetical explanation of the formula, not a calculation for any particular taxpayer.
Why the stablecoin received does not automatically reset your cost
Suppose a no-soulte exchange changes one stablecoin into another. The market value of the stablecoin received is not automatically a new, standalone acquisition cost that replaces your portfolio history. The later taxable disposal is determined with the portfolio method, including the total acquisition price and capital fractions already used. A token-by-token cost-basis shortcut can therefore diverge from the statutory calculation.
5. Assemble the figures before completing Form 2086
A reliable calculation is a records exercise as much as a mathematical one. Build a ledger that can reconstruct every taxable event and the portfolio immediately before it.
Records to retain
- Exchange and broker statements showing dates, assets, quantities and consideration.
- Wallet addresses, transfer records and balances for personal wallets and offline storage.
- Fiat purchase confirmations and bank records.
- Evidence of any goods or services exchanged for digital assets.
- Separate identification of each soulte paid or received.
- Platform, network-validation and other disposal-fee invoices or statements.
- Prices, valuation sources, timestamps and exchange rates used for portfolio values.
- A running record of capital fractions allocated to earlier taxable disposals.
Keep the records in a form that allows you to reproduce the global portfolio value across all locations. A statement from one exchange is not enough if assets were also held on another platform or in self-custody.

Record each no-soulte crypto-to-crypto exchange even though it is deferred. Note the assets exchanged, quantities, time, counterparties or platforms, fees and confirmation that no cash balancing amount was involved. These details establish the chain of transactions that feeds the acquisition-price calculation when a later disposal occurs.
Handle fees consistently
Classify each fee rather than subtracting every charge from proceeds. Determine whether it is a substantiated expense of the taxable disposal, a network or validation charge covered by an administrative simplification, or a cost that belongs elsewhere in the records. Apply the permitted reduction to the disposal-price term without altering the disposal-price-to-portfolio-value ratio contrary to the BOFiP method.

6. Apply the €305 annual threshold correctly
For 2025 revenues, the 2026 Form 2086 notice states that gains are exempt when the total annual disposal prices, excluding no-soulte digital-asset exchanges, do not exceed €305. The threshold is based on gross disposal prices, not on the amount of gain. When the annual total exceeds €305, the applicable disposals fall within the regime and must be calculated under the portfolio formula.
Consequently, a year with a small economic gain can still cross the threshold if the gross amounts sold are large, while a year with a larger percentage gain may remain outside the regime if qualifying gross disposal prices stay within the limit. Check the version of Form 2086 for the tax year being filed; thresholds and instructions are tax-year specific.
DGFiP guidance says the Form 2086 detail is required even when the relevant disposal prices are below the threshold. Follow the filing instructions for the year and retain the calculation showing how you reached the annual total.
7. Net gains and losses for the year
After calculating each applicable disposal, combine the year’s results under the private digital-asset rules. A net loss can offset only gains of the same nature during that same year. It cannot be carried forward to a later year and cannot be used against gains from another category of asset.
Maintain a schedule showing every taxable disposal, its gross gain or loss, and the year-end net result. Do not use a digital-asset loss to reduce salary, rental, securities or other non-digital-asset income unless a different rule specifically applies to your situation.
8. Report the result with the annual return
Form 2086 and the income-tax return
- Identify every disposal that is not covered by the no-soulte deferral.
- Calculate each gross result with the portfolio formula and document the inputs.
- Net the year’s same-nature digital-asset gains and losses.
- Complete Form 2086 for the relevant tax year, including the detailed transactions required by its instructions.
- Carry the net gain to box 3AN or the net loss to box 3BN, as applicable.
Even if the annual disposal-price threshold appears not to be exceeded, follow the year’s instructions for the 2086 detail rather than omitting it on the assumption that no tax is due.

Foreign digital-asset accounts
If you hold an account with a digital-asset platform located abroad, consider the separate foreign-account reporting obligation. DGFiP provides online reporting and, for paper declarations, Form 3916-3916 bis. This obligation is distinct from calculating the gain on Form 2086; satisfying one does not replace the other.

9. Tax rates for 2025 revenues filed in 2026
The 2026 Form 2086 notice for 2025 revenues states a 12.8% income-tax component for the private individual’s default flat-tax treatment. DGFiP taxpayer guidance modified 17 July 2026 reports a total prélèvement forfaitaire unique (PFU) of 31.4%, made up of 12.8% income tax and 18.6% social levies.
The taxpayer may expressly and irrevocably elect the progressive income-tax scale for the household’s relevant digital-asset gains by using box 3CN. Compare the consequences for the household’s entire tax position before making that election; it is not a transaction-by-transaction choice. Because rates and forms are time-sensitive, verify the official notice for the year in which you file.
10. Common mistakes that change the answer
Treating every stablecoin swap as taxable
A pure digital-asset exchange without a soulte is generally deferred under the private regime. The taxable event normally arises later when consideration is euros, a non-digital good, a service, or a digital-asset exchange with a soulte.

Form 2086 uses the whole portfolio’s acquisition price and global value. A spreadsheet that assigns the original purchase price only to the units sold may not reproduce the statutory result.
Using only one wallet’s balance
The global value includes relevant assets and rights held across exchanges, personal servers and offline storage. Gather the household-wide position before the disposal.
Using gain instead of gross proceeds for the threshold
The €305 test concerns annual gross disposal prices, excluding deferred no-soulte exchanges. It is not a €305 gain allowance.
Subtracting fees from every formula term
Substantiated disposal expenses can affect the disposal-price term, but they do not automatically reduce the ratio used to allocate portfolio acquisition cost. Apply the documented BOFiP treatment to each type of fee.
Ignoring professional-status risk
High-volume or organised activity may not belong in the private regime. Resolve BIC or BNC classification before relying on Form 2086.
11. A transaction-by-transaction decision table
| What you receive or pay | Typical treatment for a private individual | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Digital asset for digital asset, no soulte | Tax deferral; not an immediate taxable disposal | Assets, quantities, date, fees and proof that no soulte was involved |
| Digital asset for euros or other legal tender | Taxable disposal subject to the portfolio formula | Gross proceeds, disposal expenses, portfolio value and acquisition-price schedule |
| Digital asset for a non-digital good | Taxable disposal | Value of the consideration and supporting invoice or contract |
| Digital asset used to pay for a service | Taxable disposal | Service value, date, quantity transferred and fee records |
| Digital asset for another digital asset plus a soulte | Not the protected no-soulte exchange; calculate under the applicable disposal rules | Token values and the soulte paid or received |
12. When a professional review is warranted
Obtain advice tied to the relevant tax year and your records if the token’s legal status is uncertain, a transaction includes mixed consideration, you cannot reconstruct balances across platforms, you have substantial soultes, or your activity may be professional-like. The same applies when a foreign platform account, staking or other arrangements create reporting questions not resolved by the basic Form 2086 calculation.
A professional can also test whether your valuation method is consistent, whether prior taxable disposals used the correct capital fractions, and whether the progressive-scale election in box 3CN is beneficial for the household. Keep the final advice with the ledger that supports the filed return.
