To estimate a Bitcoin miner’s operating profit, calculate its expected BTC production from hashrate, network difficulty, block reward and fees; convert that BTC to dollars at a stated BTC price; then subtract electricity, pool fees and other recurring costs. The core daily model is:
Net profit = (BTC produced per day × BTC price) − electricity − pool fee − other recurring operating costs

Use measured wall power, a realistic uptime fraction and the marginal electricity rate your machine adds to the bill. Because difficulty, transaction fees, BTC price and tariffs change, the result is a scenario—not a guaranteed income figure.

A machine can have a positive operating margin while still taking years to recover its purchase price. Conversely, a cheap used machine can have an attractive payback calculation but lose money every day at an expensive tariff. Calculate operating profit first, then evaluate payback or return on investment.

Measured watts at the outlet when possible | Electricity is paid on power drawn, not the marketing specification alone. |
| Electricity rate | r |
Marginal USD per kWh | Use the incremental tariff, plus applicable demand or hosting charges. |
| Hours per day | h |
Usually 24, adjusted for planned downtime | Converts power into daily energy use. |
| Pool fee | f_pool |

Calculate expected Bitcoin per day
The expected-hash formulation estimates how much block work your miner performs in one day:
BTC_day = (H × 10^12 × 86,400 × u ÷ (D × 2^32)) × (S + F)
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →H is in TH/s, so multiplying by 10^12 converts it to hashes per second. There are 86,400 seconds in a day. Difficulty is multiplied by 2^32, the conventional difficulty target factor. The result is multiplied by the combined subsidy and average transaction fees per block.
This is an expected value over time. It does not mean a small miner receives exactly that amount every day, especially when mining solo. A pool uses contributed shares to make payments more regular.
Why difficulty must be refreshed
Difficulty changes as the Bitcoin network adjusts its target. A calculator result made with yesterday’s difficulty can become stale after an adjustment or a major change in network hashrate. Record the difficulty value and timestamp beside every estimate so you can reproduce it later.
Include fees as a separate assumption
Using only the subsidy produces a conservative estimate but omits fee revenue. Including fees is more complete, but the assumed average can be volatile. Keep S and F in separate spreadsheet cells so you can test a low-fee and high-fee case without changing the formula.

Revenue_day = BTC_day × P_btc
State the price timestamp or label it as a bear, base or bull assumption. Do not describe this output as guaranteed daily income: both the number of coins produced and their dollar value can change.
Calculate electricity cost from wall power
The direct electricity equation is:
Power_cost_day = (W ÷ 1,000) × h × r
Dividing watts by 1,000 converts the miner to kilowatts. Multiplying by operating hours gives kWh, and multiplying by the marginal rate gives the daily energy charge.
Illustrative power-cost table
For a 3,000 W miner operating 24 hours, the following are arithmetic examples, not market quotes:
| Electricity rate | Daily energy cost | 30-day arithmetic total |
|---|---|---|
| $0.04/kWh | $2.88 | $86.40 |
| $0.08/kWh | $5.76 | $172.80 |
| $0.12/kWh | $8.64 | $259.20 |
| $0.20/kWh | $14.40 | $432.00 |
The 30-day column simply multiplies one day by 30. It is not a forecast; uptime, rates, difficulty, fees and price can all change during that period.
Use the marginal rate, not an advertised average
Use the extra cost caused by running the miner. A household bill may contain tiered energy prices, fixed charges and taxes. A hosted machine may have an all-in monthly charge rather than a separate kWh line. Convert the actual incremental bill or hosting charge into a daily operating cost, and add demand charges when the miner triggers them.
Efficiency is a comparison metric
Energy efficiency is normally expressed in joules per terahash (J/TH). A device using 1,000 W to produce 10 TH/s has an efficiency of 100 J/TH, as illustrated in the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance methodology. Compute it as:
J_per_TH = W ÷ H
Lower J/TH means less electricity for the same hashrate, but efficiency alone does not determine the best investment. Purchase price, uptime, repairability, noise, electrical requirements and the rate you can actually obtain all affect the result.
Subtract pool fees and other recurring costs
For a pool fee expressed as a decimal fraction:
Pool_fee_day = Revenue_day × f_pool
Then calculate operating profit:
Net_operating_profit_day = Revenue_day − Power_cost_day − Pool_fee_day − other_recurring_costs

Other recurring costs can include hosting, cooling, ventilation, maintenance contracts, replacement fans, internet service attributable to the miner and payment-processing charges. Keep each item in its own line so you can see which cost is driving the result.
Step-by-step worked scenario
Consider an illustrative miner rated at 100 TH/s and 3,000 W. Assume 24-hour operation, 100% uptime for the first pass, a $0.08/kWh tariff, and scenario values for current difficulty, subsidy, fees and BTC price. These inputs are deliberately not a current market quote.
- Enter hashrate: set
H = 100TH/s. Use sustained hashrate if the machine throttles under heat or a particular firmware setting. - Enter network and reward assumptions: record
D,SandFwith their dates. Use the 3.125 BTC subsidy only for the post-April-2024 scenario described by the cited calculator methodology. - Calculate BTC/day: apply
(100 × 10^12 × 86,400 × u ÷ (D × 2^32)) × (S + F). - Convert to dollars: multiply the BTC/day result by your timestamped
P_btc. - Calculate electricity:
(3,000 ÷ 1,000) × 24 × $0.08 = $5.76 per day. - Subtract the pool fee: multiply gross revenue by the pool’s decimal fee rate.
- Add recurring overhead: subtract hosting, cooling, maintenance or other costs that apply to this machine.
- Label the result: call it a scenario operating profit, not guaranteed income. For a rough 30-day arithmetic view, multiply the daily result by 30 only after noting that all volatile inputs may change.
Find the break-even electricity rate
Break-even is the maximum electricity rate at which the chosen scenario has no operating profit or loss before hardware amortization. Solve the net-profit equation for the rate:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
r_break_even = (Revenue_day − Pool_fee_day − other_recurring_costs) ÷ ((W ÷ 1,000) × h)
If your actual marginal rate is below this threshold, the scenario has a positive operating margin. If it is above the threshold, the machine loses money before the ASIC purchase price, financing or taxes are considered.
How to use the threshold safely
- Calculate it separately for bear, base and bull BTC-price cases.
- Use realistic uptime; assuming 100% uptime raises the threshold artificially.
- Include hosting or cooling in recurring costs rather than treating them as free.
- Recalculate after a difficulty adjustment, a material BTC-price move, a tariff change or a pool-fee change.
There is no universal Bitcoin ASIC break-even rate. The threshold belongs to a specific machine and a specific set of network and market assumptions.
How to obtain defensible input values
Hashrate
Start with the miner’s sustained hashrate, not only its maximum marketing figure. Firmware profiles, ambient temperature, rejected shares and thermal throttling can reduce the delivered rate. If you have pool statistics, use an appropriately long average rather than a brief peak.

Electricity and demand charges
Use the marginal kWh price that the additional load creates. Check time-of-use periods, tier thresholds, taxes and demand charges. A low energy rate can be outweighed by a demand charge if the miner establishes a new monthly peak.
Uptime
Set u below 1 when you expect maintenance, connectivity failures, curtailment or seasonal shutdowns. A machine that is nominally online 95% of the time should be modeled with u = 0.95, not 1.00.
Fees and price
Record the BTC price, average transaction-fee assumption, difficulty and date together. Run at least three scenarios so one favorable price or fee assumption does not dominate your decision.

Pool mining versus solo mining
In pooled mining, the miner submits partial proofs called shares. The pool uses those shares to measure contributed work and pays participants roughly in proportion to their hashing contribution, according to its payout rules. This reduces the time between payments and smooths variance.
Solo mining pays only when your machine or your solo setup finds a valid block. The long-run expected value can be similar for the same hashrate, but a small operator may experience very long periods with no payout. For cash-flow planning, model pool payments and pool fees rather than treating expected BTC/day as a daily guaranteed transfer.

When evaluating multiple ASICs, calculate each with the same network, price, fee, uptime and tariff assumptions. A useful comparison table contains:
| Axis | What to calculate or verify |
|---|---|
| Operating margin | Net dollars per day after electricity, pool fee and recurring overhead. |
| Efficiency | J/TH from measured wall power and sustained hashrate. |
| Energy threshold | Break-even USD/kWh under identical revenue assumptions. |
| Capital recovery | Purchase, shipping, setup and electrical work divided by positive daily profit. |
| Reliability | Expected uptime, repair access, warranty terms and thermal behavior. |
| Site fit | Voltage, circuit capacity, heat rejection, noise and ventilation requirements. |
The most efficient machine is not automatically the best investment. A large price premium can lengthen payback, and poor uptime can erase the theoretical energy advantage.
Keep capital expenditure out of the daily energy line
Hardware purchase price, shipping, import costs, setup, wiring and financing are capital or financing items. Do not subtract them from the electricity calculation. After obtaining a positive operating estimate, you can calculate a simple payback:
Best Value
Payback_days = Total_upfront_cost ÷ Net_operating_profit_day
Use this only when daily operating profit is positive. If the result is zero or negative, there is no finite payback under that scenario. For a fuller return estimate, include downtime, repairs, resale value, taxes, financing interest and the possibility that the machine becomes obsolete before recovery.
Build a reproducible spreadsheet or script
Put every assumption in a labeled cell and preserve units. A minimal layout is:

Stress-test the result before buying or operating
Price sensitivity
Run lower, middle and higher BTC-price cases. Revenue changes directly with BTC price, while the electricity bill does not, so the operating margin can move from positive to negative without any hardware change.
Difficulty sensitivity
Increase difficulty in a separate case. Expected BTC/day falls as difficulty rises, even if your miner’s hashrate and power remain constant.
Fee sensitivity
Use a low-fee case and a higher-fee case. Treat transaction fees as variable reward, not a fixed replacement for the subsidy.
Uptime sensitivity
Compare 95%, 98% and 100% uptime if you have no operating history. This reveals how much margin is consumed by outages and maintenance.
Tariff sensitivity
Test the actual tariff and at least one higher rate. A machine near break-even has little protection against a utility increase, a demand charge or a hosting surcharge.
Common calculation mistakes and fixes
- Using a hashrate-only calculator: Fix it by entering wall power and the actual marginal tariff.
- Confusing watts with kilowatts: Divide watts by 1,000 before multiplying by hours and USD/kWh.
- Using nameplate power as guaranteed draw: Measure at the outlet and account for fans, power-supply losses and heat.
- Forgetting pool fees: Subtract the pool fee from revenue, not from hashrate.
- Calling gross revenue profit: Electricity and recurring operating costs must be deducted first.
- Including hardware price in electricity: Keep capital recovery in a separate payback or ROI calculation.
- Assuming 24/7 uptime: Apply a realistic uptime fraction.
- Using stale difficulty or price: Timestamp inputs and refresh the scenario.
- Omitting transaction fees entirely: Either include an explicit fee assumption or state that the result is subsidy-only and conservative.
- Ignoring site constraints: Check circuit capacity, voltage, heat removal, ventilation and noise before deployment.
- Treating solo expected value as regular income: Model payout variance and cash reserves separately from expected BTC/day.
How to interpret the final number
A credible result should tell you all of the following in one place:
- The miner’s sustained hashrate and measured or stated wall power.
- Difficulty, subsidy, transaction-fee assumption and their dates.
- BTC price scenario and timestamp.
- Uptime fraction and operating hours.
- Electricity rate, demand-charge treatment and hosting assumptions.
- Pool fee and every other recurring daily cost.
- Net operating profit, break-even electricity rate and the assumptions behind each.
If the actual rate is below break-even across conservative scenarios, the machine has operating resilience. If it is profitable only under an optimistic price, low difficulty or perfect uptime, treat it as a high-risk speculation rather than dependable income. Only after that operating test should you decide whether the hardware price and expected payback justify the capital commitment.
