Calculate bandwidth from the encoder’s outgoing stream, not from the number of viewers. Start with YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate for your resolution, frame rate, and codec, then reserve 20% upload headroom: required available upload ≈ stream bitrate ÷ 0.8. For example, a 1080p30 H.264 feed at YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps needs about 17.5 Mbps of available upload capacity. A steady 10 Mbps feed also transfers about 108 decimal GB per day.
What bandwidth a nonstop YouTube stream needs
Your streaming computer or service sends one live encoder feed to YouTube. YouTube then transcodes that feed into multiple output formats for viewers, so your upload requirement does not multiply with audience size. With prerecorded video, the source is a recording or playlist, but the live feed still has to be sent continuously while the stream is running. YouTube’s live encoder guidance describes its transcoding process.

For a stable setup, plan around the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate and the upload capacity available to it. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total streaming bitrate; other devices or simultaneous feeds sharing the connection reduce what is available to your stream. A brief speed test is a useful check, not proof that a connection will remain stable around the clock.

Use YouTube’s live ingest recommendations for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. The table below gives YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates and the planning upload targets calculated by dividing each bitrate by 0.8. The target column is arithmetic based on YouTube’s 20% headroom advice; it is not a separate YouTube-published rate.

YouTube’s live settings guidance also lists recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. If your encoder uses either codec, use the matching row in YouTube’s live encoder settings table instead of assuming the H.264 figures apply. These are live ingest recommendations, not settings for uploading a finished video file; YouTube publishes separate guidance for video upload encoding.
Calculate the upload capacity to reserve
- Choose output settings. Set the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to stream.
- Find the matching live ingest recommendation. Use YouTube’s encoder table for that codec and format.
- Set a reasonable stream bitrate. Use the recommended value unless you have tested a different setting successfully.
- Divide by 0.8. Required available upload ≈ total stream bitrate ÷ 0.8. For simultaneous primary and backup feeds, add their total bitrates first, then divide the sum by 0.8.
- Measure upload capacity on the actual connection. Check the connection used by the encoder and repeat the check under normal household or workplace network load. Count competing devices and services against the available capacity.
Example: 1080p30 H.264
YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264. The planning target is 14 ÷ 0.8 = 17.5 Mbps of available upload capacity. If another device is uploading or a second feed is running on the same connection, that use also needs capacity.

Upload speed is not download speed
The encoder needs outbound upload bandwidth. A fast download result does not establish that the connection can send the live feed. YouTube advises checking outbound upload capacity and notes that inbound/download bandwidth is often greater than outbound/upload bandwidth. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Estimate data use for 24/7 streaming
For a constant encoded rate of R Mbps, approximate decimal data transfer is R × 10.8 GB per 24 hours, or R × 324 GB per 30-day month. This estimate assumes a constant rate and uninterrupted streaming; overhead, retransmissions, and bitrate behavior can change actual usage. It is a planning calculation, not a provider’s billing figure.

These values describe the encoder’s outgoing feed. They do not increase with viewer count: YouTube handles distribution and transcoding after receiving the feed.
Encoder and connection settings that affect the calculation
- Rate control: For the listed RTMP/RTMPS live settings, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Use the bitrate appropriate to the selected codec and video format.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio or 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. Include audio when estimating the encoder’s total output rate, but do not add it twice if the configured bitrate already represents the total stream rate.
- Ingest protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.
- Stream key: The stream key tells YouTube to accept the encoder feed and functions like a password. Keep it private.
See YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for its listed recommendations. The guidance pages do not display publication dates, and YouTube may update settings, so check the table again when configuring a new encoder.

Check whether a connection is suitable for nonstop streaming
A connection can meet the target during a speed test and still have interruptions later. Before relying on a 24/7 feed, test the actual encoder and connection, including at ordinary busy times. YouTube’s advice is to leave 20% headroom and account for the upload bandwidth available to the stream; shared network traffic can take away that margin.

- Use a wired Ethernet connection if the streaming computer can be connected to the router; it is an optional reliability measure, not a substitute for adequate internet upload capacity.
- Check for other devices uploading large files, running cloud backups, or sending additional live feeds.
- Observe the stream over an extended test period and watch for dropped frames or connection interruptions, not only the peak speed-test result.
- If measured upload capacity does not meet the calculated target under normal network load, reduce the stream bitrate or use a connection with more available upload capacity.
Common bandwidth calculation mistakes
- Using download speed: Upload capacity is the relevant direction for sending the encoder feed.
- Using video-file upload settings: A prerecorded source does not make a live stream an ordinary file upload. Use live ingest settings for the outgoing feed.
- Buying a plan based on its headline speed alone: The relevant figure is upload capacity available to the encoder under real shared-network conditions, with the recommended headroom.
- Multiplying by viewers: The encoder sends a feed to YouTube, which transcodes it for viewers.
- Treating a single speed test as a 24/7 guarantee: A test is a snapshot; continuous streaming also depends on connection stability.
