For a 24/7 YouTube music stream, calculate both the upload speed needed at any moment and the data sent over a month. Add YouTube’s recommended video bitrate for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate to the audio bitrate; allow extra upload headroom for overhead and other network use. For monthly data, use total bitrate in Mbps × 324 GB for an uninterrupted 30-day month, using decimal gigabytes.
Bandwidth means upload capacity and monthly data
These are separate requirements. Upload capacity is the sustained upstream rate needed to send the encoder’s feed to YouTube. Monthly data is the volume that feed consumes over time. Neither is determined by the fact that the stream is music: a stream with static artwork still sends video.

- Upload capacity: Add video and audio bitrates, then leave headroom for network overhead, fluctuations and other traffic using the connection. Measure actual upload performance rather than relying on an advertised broadband speed.
- Monthly data: At a constant bitrate, each 1 Mbps running continuously uses about 324 GB (decimal) in 30 days. The calculation is Mbps × 1,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000.
YouTube transcodes a submitted live stream into different output formats for viewers. Your upload calculation is for the feed you send to YouTube; it does not add together the downstream traffic of your viewers. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide the platform guidance.

YouTube’s recommended video bitrate depends on the ingestion codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are recommended video bitrates, not measured broadband speeds or guarantees of visual quality. Choose the row that matches the encoder output you will actually use.

The YouTube settings page also lists minimum bitrate settings; use its full table when configuring a particular encoder. For a simple music visual, select resolution and frame rate deliberately rather than assuming that an audio-led broadcast needs no video bandwidth. YouTube says HEVC can provide 25%–50% more data compression than H.264 at the same video quality, but actual results vary with content and implementation; do not treat that range as guaranteed savings. Add audio to the video rate
YouTube’s recommended advanced settings specify 128 Kbps stereo audio (44.1 kHz) or 384 Kbps 5.1 audio (48 kHz). Convert Kbps to Mbps before adding: 128 Kbps is 0.128 Mbps, and 384 Kbps is 0.384 Mbps. For example, 1080p30 H.264 at the recommended 14 Mbps video rate plus 128 Kbps stereo audio is 14.128 Mbps before network overhead.

Estimate the 30-day data allowance
Multiply the total video-plus-audio bitrate by 324 to estimate decimal GB for 30 uninterrupted days. These are calculations from bitrate and elapsed time, not a prediction of an ISP meter; overhead, interruptions, reconnects and duplicate feeds can change actual usage.

If an ISP reports binary units, 3,240 decimal GB is about 3,017 GiB. Check how your provider defines and meters its allowance. If sending a redundant second copy, include that additional outbound feed in the estimate; YouTube’s API documentation describes optional simultaneous primary and backup ingestion. Configure the encoder and validate the connection
- Choose codec, resolution, frame rate and video bitrate. Select the matching YouTube recommendation, then configure those same values in the encoder.
- Choose audio settings and total the rates. Add the audio bitrate to video; use the resulting total as the baseline upstream throughput requirement.
- Set the transport and encoding options. YouTube recommends CBR, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds). It recommends RTMPS. YouTube live encoder settings
- Test sustained upload, not download. Run a speed test and verify the upstream result. Then test with the intended stream settings and representative audio and visual motion. YouTube advises: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- Check stream health over time. A single speed test cannot establish uninterrupted 24/7 service. Monitor the encoder’s actual output and YouTube’s stream-health messages during a representative test and broadcast. YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” Its API describes health status and configuration issues including low video bitrate, audio problems, or missing audio/video. - Account for shared traffic and copies. Include other devices and workloads that use the same connection. If you send to multiple destinations or create a backup feed, calculate each outbound stream separately.
- Check the plan’s data terms. Multiply the actual total Mbps by 324 for a 30-day estimate, then check the ISP’s cap, fair-use policy, upload metering and units.
What to check when choosing an Indian broadband plan
The bitrate arithmetic is the same in India as elsewhere, but the connection and plan are address- and provider-specific. No universal Indian plan speed or data cap can be inferred from the stream settings alone. Before relying on a connection for a continuous channel, verify:
- Measured upload speed at the installation address, including performance at the times you expect to stream.
- Whether uploads count toward any monthly data cap or fair-use limit, and whether the provider uses GB or GiB.
- Expected contention, service availability and support terms for your specific plan.
- Whether your chosen sustained upload rate leaves room for ordinary household or studio network use.
These checks address network capacity only. They do not establish music licensing or permission to broadcast particular recordings; confirm those rights separately.
