For example, a steady 6 Mbps stream uses about 64.8 GB per day and 1,944 GB (1.944 TB) in 30 days. These are calculations, not measured totals.
What “bandwidth” means for a live stream
For this calculation, bandwidth is often used to mean either the stream’s upload rate or the amount of data transferred over time. They are different quantities:

- Upload rate: the stream’s bitrate, measured in megabits per second (Mbps), sent from your encoder to YouTube.
- Transferred data: the accumulated upload over a period, measured here in decimal gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB).
- Viewer delivery: data YouTube sends to viewers. It is not the same as your creator-side upload.
YouTube says it transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. So your encoder’s bitrate does not tell you the playback rate for every viewer, or the total data YouTube delivers to the audience. YouTube’s live encoder settings describe the incoming stream and its processing.

For a sustained total bitrate of R Mbps:
- Estimated data per day: R × 10.8 decimal GB
- Estimated data per 30 days: R × 324 decimal GB
The arithmetic converts bits per second into bytes over time, then divides by 1,000,000,000 to get decimal GB. One day has 86,400 seconds; 30 days has 2,592,000 seconds. These multipliers assume the bitrate is sustained throughout the period.

Calculated examples
The values below are estimates calculated from bitrate and duration, not published measurements. GB and TB use decimal units.

YouTube lists 6 Mbps as a recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p at 60 fps. That is an example encoder setting, not a special recommendation for ambient audio or continuous channels. Its recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings when choosing your setup.

Find the bitrate to use
- Open your encoder’s output or streaming settings and note the video bitrate and audio bitrate, or use the encoder’s displayed total stream bitrate if it provides one.
- Use the total audio-plus-video bitrate as the formula input. If you add separate video and audio figures, add each only once.
- For variable-bitrate output, use a representative measured average for the period you want to estimate, or use a conservative high estimate. The calculation assumes an average sustained rate; YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) in its encoder guidance.
- Multiply by 10.8 for a day or 324 for a 30-day estimate. For a different duration, scale the daily estimate by the number of days.
Resolution alone is not enough to calculate data use: bitrate, codec, and frame rate affect the settings. A mostly static ambient scene may not need the same visual settings as fast-moving footage, but there is no official ambient-specific 24/7 bitrate in the cited YouTube guidance. Choose settings that look acceptable for your content, then calculate from the actual configured bitrate rather than assuming a preset.

The formula estimates data volume, not the internet connection speed you need or the size of your ISP’s monthly data allowance. Your connection must sustain the configured upload rate; YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health, but its cited guidance does not set one universal safety margin for every creator.

Before committing to a long-running ambient stream, test the actual loop, including its audio and movement, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. This can reveal whether the chosen settings remain stable in your setup; a transfer estimate by itself cannot guarantee a reliable connection.
What can make metered totals differ?
- Reconnects and restarts: these can add traffic beyond an uninterrupted-duration estimate. Official guidance cited here does not specify a universal percentage to add for this.
- Protocol overhead: network-metered totals can include overhead, but no blanket overhead factor is established in the cited material.
- Backup ingest: YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents primary and backup ingestion addresses. Count extra traffic only if your setup actually sends a separate backup stream concurrently; the existence of a backup address does not mean every creator transmits both. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation also describes stream status and health fields.
- Actual month length: 324 GB per Mbps is a 30-day estimate, not a calendar-month constant. A 31-day month transfers more at the same sustained rate; a 28-day month transfers less.
Codec comparisons need similar care. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance says HEVC generally provides 25% to 50% more compression than H.264 at the same video quality. That qualification is specific to that guidance, not a guaranteed reduction in a particular creator’s observed upload. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance should not be treated as a promise that switching codecs will cut every stream’s data by a fixed amount.
