To calculate a stock’s five-year performance, first decide whether you want price return or total return. Use comparable closing prices from the same security, currency and exchange, then calculate cumulative return as (ending value ÷ starting value) − 1. Annualize that result with (ending value ÷ starting value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1. For a five-year period, the exponent is 1/5. Use split-adjusted closes for a price-only result and a provider-defined dividend-and-split-adjusted close for a dividend-inclusive result.
What a five-year stock return measures
A five-year return compares what an investment was worth at the beginning of a defined period with what it was worth at the end. The result can be expressed in two different ways:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Cumulative return tells you the total percentage change over the whole period.
- CAGR (compound annual growth rate) converts the endpoint change into a constant annual rate that would produce the same result if it compounded every year.
These are descriptions of historical endpoints, not forecasts. A CAGR does not mean the stock actually gained the same percentage in every year, nor does it predict the next five years.
Price return versus total return
A price return measures only the change in the quoted share price. It excludes cash dividends and other distributions. A total return includes distributions such as dividends, interest and capital gains. Vanguard uses that broader definition for total return.

For a dividend-paying stock, the two figures can differ substantially. Calling a price-only calculation “total return” overstates what the calculation represents. Before downloading prices, write down which return you intend to report.
| Return type | What it includes | Typical data field | What it answers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price return | Share-price movement, with stock splits handled so the price series remains comparable | Split-adjusted close, or an equivalent price series | How much did the quoted share price change? |
| Total return | Price movement plus distributions, usually assuming dividends are reinvested | Provider-defined adjusted close, or a reconstructed reinvested-dividend series | How much did an investment grow with distributions included? |
Set a consistent five-year window
“The last five years” is not a complete data definition. A calendar date can land on a weekend, exchange holiday or day when the security did not trade. Select the actual trading observations you will use and document them.
Choose the start and end observations
For a requested start date, use the closing price on the last trading day on or before that date. Apply the same rule to the end date. If the requested dates are January 1 and January 1 five years later, for example, both dates may need to move to the nearest prior trading session.
Recommended Free Tools
Record the exact dates shown in the historical-price data, not only the calendar dates you originally requested. The elapsed period for CAGR is based on those observations. If the observations are not exactly five years apart, use the measured elapsed time in years rather than automatically using 5.
Keep the data definition constant
Use the same:
- Security and ticker, including the same share class where applicable.
- Exchange and trading venue.
- Currency.
- Price field, such as close or adjusted close.
- Adjustment convention and data provider.
Changing any of these between the first and last observation can make the quotient meaningless. A foreign-currency price series, for example, does not show the same result as a return translated into your home currency unless the currency treatment is explicitly included.
Decide whether dividends belong in the calculation
Price-only analysis
Use a split-adjusted closing-price series when the question is how the share price changed. Dividends are deliberately excluded. This is useful for isolating market-price movement, but it is not the return earned by an investor who received or reinvested dividends.
Dividend-inclusive total return
For total return, use an adjusted-close field only when the provider explains that its adjustments include both splits and distributions. Yahoo’s definition is: “Adjusted close is the closing price after adjustments for all applicable splits and dividend distributions.” Under that convention, earlier observations are transformed so the endpoint ratio incorporates the effect of those distributions.

An alternative is to reconstruct the series yourself from split events, dividend ex-dates and the relevant prices. The reconstruction must state whether dividends are reinvested. SEC performance-graph rules assume reinvestment of dividends when calculating cumulative total return, so a result following that convention is not the same as a cash-dividend, no-reinvestment result.
Why a split adjustment is necessary
A stock split changes the number of shares and the quoted price per share without, by itself, changing the investor’s wealth. If you compare an unadjusted price before a split with an unadjusted price after it, the apparent drop or increase can be entirely artificial. A split-adjusted series removes that mechanical discontinuity.
Why dividends change the answer
On the ex-dividend date, the share price generally reflects the distribution leaving the company. A price-only series therefore omits the cash received by the shareholder. A reinvested total-return series credits that distribution back into the investment, so it captures both the price movement and the additional shares or value created by reinvestment.
Calculate cumulative five-year return
Let V0 be the starting value and V1 the ending value. Use values from the same return convention.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Cumulative return = (V1 / V0) − 1
Multiply the decimal result by 100 to report a percentage. If $1,000 becomes $1,800, the calculation is:
(1,800 / 1,000) − 1 = 0.80
The cumulative return is therefore 80%. This says the ending value is 1.8 times the starting value over the selected period. It does not say the investment earned 80% in each year.
Using a single share instead of a dollar investment
You can use one share, $1,000, or any other starting amount. The scale cancels in the ratio as long as both endpoints use the same basis. For total return, however, the values must reflect the same dividend-reinvestment convention; otherwise the ratio mixes incompatible measurements.

Calculate CAGR from the endpoints
CAGR answers: “What constant annual compounded rate would turn the starting value into the ending value over this elapsed period?” For exactly five years:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCAGR = (V1 / V0)^(1/5) − 1
For dates that are not exactly five years apart:
CAGR = (V1 / V0)^(1/years) − 1
Here, years is the elapsed time between the two observations under the convention you disclose. The SEC’s standardized-return equation expresses the same idea as P(1 + T)^n = ending value, which rearranges to T = (ending value / initial value)^(1/n) − 1.
Worked five-year example
With a starting value of $1,000 and an ending value of $1,800:
- Compute the growth multiple:
1,800 / 1,000 = 1.8. - Take the fifth root:
1.8^(1/5). - Subtract 1.
The result is approximately 14.87% CAGR, rounded. Dividing the 80% cumulative gain by five would produce 16%, which is not the compounded annual rate. Compounding makes the correct annualized figure lower than that simple division in this example.
When the period is not exactly five years
Suppose the first usable close and last usable close are separated by a period that is slightly shorter or longer than five calendar years because of the chosen trading dates. Do not silently label the result “five-year CAGR.” Calculate the elapsed years under your stated convention, insert that value into the exponent, and identify the actual start and end dates in the report.
A practical calculation workflow
- State the objective. Write “price return” or “total return,” and note whether dividends are reinvested.
- Select the security. Confirm the ticker, share class, exchange and currency.
- Set the requested dates. Choose the start and end calendar dates, then locate the last trading close on or before each date.
- Choose the price field. Use a split-adjusted close for price return. Use a dividend-and-split-adjusted close only when the provider defines the adjustment that way for total return.
- Record the observations. Save the exact dates, values, provider, field name and any adjustment notes.
- Calculate the cumulative result. Apply
(V1 / V0) − 1and convert the decimal to a percentage. - Calculate CAGR. Apply the five-year formula only when the period is exactly five years; otherwise use the measured elapsed years.
- Round at the end. Keep full precision during the calculation and round the displayed percentage afterward.
- Label the result. Include “price return” or “total return,” the date range, currency and dividend assumption beside the number.
Spreadsheet formulas
A spreadsheet can calculate both measures without downloading a specialized finance model. Put the starting value in cell B2, the ending value in B3, and the elapsed years in B4.
| Measure | Formula | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Cumulative return | =B3/B2-1 |
Total growth over the selected interval |
| Five-year CAGR | =(B3/B2)^(1/5)-1 |
Annualized growth when the interval is exactly five years |
| Date-adjusted CAGR | =(B3/B2)^(1/B4)-1 |
Annualized growth using the recorded elapsed years |
Format the output cells as percentages. Do not enter 80 for an 80% return unless the spreadsheet is explicitly configured for percentage points; enter the underlying decimal or let the formula produce it.

Calculating elapsed years from dates
If your spreadsheet stores the start date in A2 and the end date in A3, you need a stated day-count convention. A simple calendar-year approximation is the number of days between the dates divided by 365.25. Other financial systems use different conventions. Whichever method you choose, disclose it and use it consistently rather than presenting a date-sensitive CAGR with unexplained precision.
How to compare two stocks correctly
A comparison is meaningful only when the calculations are on the same axes. Before ranking stocks, check each item below.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Return type: compare price return with price return, or total return with total return.
- Annualization: compare cumulative results with cumulative results, and CAGR with CAGR.
- Dates: use identical start and end trading dates, or explain why they differ.
- Currency: use the same currency or disclose the currency conversion.
- Dividends: apply the same reinvestment or cash-dividend assumption.
- Taxes and fees: make clear whether either has been deducted.
- Source methodology: confirm that adjusted-close fields treat splits and distributions in the same way.
For example, comparing one stock’s dividend-adjusted close with another stock’s raw close gives one company a total-return treatment and the other a price-only treatment. The ranking would not isolate investment performance fairly.
Disclose assumptions with the result
The SEC cautions that performance claims depend on how dividends, taxes, and market and economic assumptions are handled. A concise disclosure should identify:
- The exact starting and ending trading dates.
- The ticker, share class, exchange and currency.
- Whether the result is price return or total return.
- Whether dividends were reinvested, taken as cash, or excluded.
- Whether the data field was close, split-adjusted close or provider-defined adjusted close.
- Whether taxes, commissions, fund expenses or other fees were included.
- The elapsed-time convention used for CAGR when the dates are not exactly five years apart.
- The rounding applied to the displayed result.
These details prevent a precise-looking percentage from being mistaken for a universal measure of what every investor earned.
Common errors and how to correct them
Dividing the cumulative gain by five
An 80% five-year gain is not a 16% CAGR. CAGR compounds, so use the fifth-root formula. The 80% example produces approximately 14.87% per year.

Best Value
Calling price return total return
If dividends are absent from the data, label the result price return. To report total return, use a documented dividend-and-split-adjusted field or reconstruct reinvested distributions.
Mixing dates or vendors
Taking the starting value from one vendor and the ending value from another can introduce different adjustment rules, currencies or trading calendars. Use one consistent source and retain its field definition.
Ignoring weekends and holidays
A requested calendar date may not have a close. Use the last trading day on or before the date, record the substituted date, and apply the same rule at both endpoints.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Reporting excessive precision
The arithmetic may produce many decimal places, but the input prices, adjustment methodology and date convention may not justify them. Keep precision internally, then present a sensibly rounded percentage with its assumptions.
Treating CAGR as a forecast
CAGR smooths the observed start and end values into one annual rate. It says nothing about the path between them and does not promise that the same rate will continue.
Interpreting a five-year result
Read cumulative return and CAGR together. Cumulative return answers how much the investment changed across the entire window. CAGR makes results across different holding periods easier to compare by expressing endpoint growth on an annual compound basis. Neither measure shows volatility, drawdowns, the sequence of gains and losses, or the risk taken to achieve the result.
A total-return CAGR can be more relevant to an investor who held the stock and reinvested distributions. A price CAGR can be appropriate when the analysis intentionally isolates market-price movement. The correct choice depends on the question, not on which percentage is larger.
Reporting template
A transparent sentence can follow this pattern:
“From [start trading date] to [end trading date], the stock’s [price or total] return in [currency] was [cumulative percentage], equivalent to a CAGR of [annualized percentage] using [close or adjusted-close methodology]. Dividends were [excluded, paid as cash or reinvested]; taxes and fees were [included or excluded].”
Replace the bracketed items with your recorded values before publishing or sharing the calculation. The sentence is useful only when those fields are filled with actual dates and documented assumptions.
