Do not overread Nintendo seals
Nintendo’s discussion of the Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal concerns licensed gaming accessories and peripherals. Its used-game and counterfeit guidance separately refers to the Original Nintendo Seal of Quality or Licensee Seal of Quality. A seal on packaging, or a Nintendo-like mark on a loose cartridge, should therefore be treated as one piece of context rather than independent proof that the game is genuine.
Before you contact a seller
1. Establish a realistic price range
Look at several current listings for the same title, edition and physical format. A price dramatically below the ordinary range is a warning sign. It is not proof of a fake: a seller may be clearing a collection, omitting the case or pricing quickly. Nevertheless, Nintendo advises extra care with websites offering large quantities of Nintendo products at very low prices because counterfeit or scam risk can be higher.

2. Confirm the exact product you want
Write down the title, Switch platform, edition, region and language before you message the seller. Nintendo tells buyers to check region and language. A listing can use familiar promotional art while offering a different regional release or a cartridge that does not match the description.
Ask directly whether the sale includes a cartridge, case, cover art, inserts or only a download code. Do not assume that a case shown in a photograph contains the cartridge, or that every physical release has identical contents. Verify the particular listing.
3. Require photographs of the actual copy
Stock art proves nothing about the item in the seller’s possession. Ask for clear, recent photographs of:
- The front of the cartridge, including the complete label and edges.
- The rear of the cartridge, with serial or other visible markings in focus.
- The case, cover and any included inserts, if they are part of the sale.

A short, specific message is more useful than a general request for reassurance: “Please photograph the front and rear of the exact cartridge beside today’s date, confirm the region and language, list everything included, and explain your return terms.” A seller who answers each point clearly gives you a better record than one who simply says the game is genuine.
How to inspect a used Switch cartridge
Inspect several features together. A single discrepancy can result from wear, a regional variation or a poor photograph; a cluster of discrepancies deserves a pause. Secondary cartridge guides offer useful warning signs, but they are not Nintendo certification standards.
Print quality and alignment
Nintendo expressly recommends examining print on cartridges and packaging. Look for lettering and artwork that are sharp, consistently colored and properly aligned. A counterfeit can imitate a label, and an authentic used cartridge can have scratches, fading or adhesive wear.

Packaging and contents
Check that the case art, cartridge label and stated region describe the same game. Missing inserts are not automatically evidence of a counterfeit, and a genuine cartridge may be sold without its original case. The key question is whether the listing accurately identifies what you will receive.
Record whether the listing promises a case, reversible cover, manual, download code or other insert. If a code is included, ask whether it has already been redeemed; a physical cartridge can still be genuine even when an advertised code no longer works, but the missing value should be disclosed.
Why booting the game is not a complete authentication test
Testing a cartridge in person is still useful. It can reveal that the item does not start, is the wrong title or has an obvious problem. In-person purchase: a cautious sequence
- Meet in a safe, agreed location. Keep the conversation and agreed price documented in the marketplace chat.
- Match the item to the listing. Confirm the title, region, cartridge and included case or inserts.
- Inspect both sides. Check print sharpness, alignment, visible identifiers, embossing and shell condition under good light.

Does a game that boots prove it is genuine?
