Before you contact the seller
- Check the listing details. Confirm the exact game, region, language, condition, and what is included. A genuine cartridge from a region you do not want may not meet your needs.
- Look for photos of the actual item. Stock images do not show the cartridge being sold. If the listing does not show both the front and back clearly, ask the seller for those photos before paying.
- Assess the seller and price as risk signals. Nintendo advises caution with products priced well below average and sites offering many Nintendo products at low prices. A low price or a large inventory is not proof of counterfeiting, but it is a reason to check more carefully. Review the seller’s feedback, return terms, and the marketplace’s buyer protections; these help manage a transaction, not authenticate a game. How to inspect the cartridge
Use several clues together and, where possible, compare the cartridge with a reliable reference or a known genuine copy of the same game and region. Nintendo Life’s DS-specific guide includes examples of counterfeit cartridges that copy some genuine-looking details, so a plausible label or matching identifier is not enough on its own.

Compare the front label and rear code
The guide describes a DS label product string that starts with NTR, followed by a four-character product number and a region designation. Compare the product number with a trustworthy reference for that title and region, then check whether the number on the rear of the cartridge matches the front. A disagreement is a warning sign.

Check print and markings in context
Look for notably blurry label art, unusual alignment, or Nintendo and patent markings that look subdued or different from a reliable reference. These are reasons for caution, not standalone proof: counterfeiters can reproduce convincing-looking labels, and print can also be affected by wear or image quality.
Apply title-specific checks only to the relevant game
Nintendo Life notes that certain Pokémon DS games use special black shells that can appear purple when held to light. Treat this as a cross-check for those titles only—not as a general test for black cartridges or a guarantee of authenticity.

Evaluate packaging separately
A used listing may include only the cartridge, and missing packaging or a manual does not by itself mean the game is counterfeit. Nintendo warns that counterfeit packaging and manuals can also be supplied. If completeness matters, ask whether the case and manual are original and request clear photos of each; judge those items separately from the cartridge. Nintendo’s guidance also recommends checking region and language, so confirm that the version shown is the one you intend to buy.

Nintendo describes a limited test for a specific error message that can occur on a DSi while playing a DS game card. If that particular error appears, Nintendo suggests trying the card in an original DS or DS Lite: if it still fails, it may be defective; if it works on those systems, Nintendo says it is likely counterfeit. Decide whether to buy, ask for more evidence, or walk away
- Consider buying when the actual cartridge is clearly photographed, the front and rear markings are consistent with a reliable reference, the print looks plausible, and the region and included items match the listing and your needs. These checks lower uncertainty; they do not guarantee authenticity.
- Ask for more evidence if the listing uses stock photos, omits the back, has an unreadable marking, or does not identify the region or included materials. Request specific photos rather than relying on a seller’s general assurance.
- Walk away if the seller will not provide basic photos, the product numbers conflict, or the overall listing has warning signs you are not comfortable with—especially when return options are unclear.
