The first route is often simpler for investors who already trade U.S. securities; direct Korean-market access depends on your broker, residence, and account eligibility. In either case, compare the fund, trading costs, currency exposure, and tax treatment before placing an order.
Choose between a U.S.-listed ETF and a Korea-listed ETF
Buy a U.S.-listed fund through your existing broker
If your brokerage account can trade the relevant U.S. exchange listing, you can buy a U.S.-listed fund without opening a Korean brokerage account. Examples include iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY), listed on NYSE Arca, as well as Franklin FTSE South Korea ETF (FLKR) and KraneShares South Korea ETF (KSMX). Fund documents describe different strategies and structures, so these tickers are examples, not interchangeable choices. Check each fund’s current prospectus and issuer fact sheet for its index, holdings, concentration, expense ratio, structure, and any currency or derivatives policy. Buy an ETF listed in South Korea
Buying directly on the Korean market requires a suitable Korean brokerage account, funding and settlement arrangements, and access to the particular security. South Korea abolished its former foreign-investor prior registration requirement effective December 14, 2023. The Financial Services Commission says foreign individuals may use passport numbers, and foreign corporate investors may use legal entity identifiers (LEIs), to open investment accounts at financial companies and invest in domestically listed securities without first registering with the Financial Supervisory Service. This removes that registration step; it does not guarantee that every broker accepts every foreign resident or offers every ETF. The Korea Exchange’s investor guide describes the broad distinction between investing through a Korean brokerage and investing indirectly through funds or ETFs. How to place an order
- Confirm your route. For a U.S.-listed fund, check that your broker supports the fund’s exchange listing and that you are eligible to trade it. For a Korea-listed fund, confirm account eligibility and the provider’s arrangements for Korean-market orders and settlement.
- Compare fund documents. Check the fund’s benchmark, holdings, concentration, expense ratio, structure, and currency or derivatives policies. Do not assume that two funds with South Korea in their names have the same exposure.
- Calculate the total cost. Review brokerage charges, minimum ticket fees, the live bid-ask spread, FX conversion and transfer charges, and any account or custody fees. Consider applicable taxes as well as the fund’s operating expenses.
- Check the market and order details. Verify the exchange, ticker, trading currency, market status, and current bid and ask before submitting. A limit order can help set the maximum price you are willing to pay, but it may not execute and does not remove market risk.
- Review the trade confirmation. Confirm the number of shares, execution price, charges, currency, and settlement details. Keep the fund’s prospectus and your broker’s fee schedule available for future review.
What fees and trading costs to compare
There is no universally cheapest route. A U.S.-listed ETF and a Korea-listed ETF can have different fund expenses, broker charges, currency-conversion costs, and tax consequences. Compare the costs that apply to your own account rather than relying on a generic ranking.
- Fund expense ratio and other fund expenses: Use the selected fund’s current prospectus. The available fund filings identify products but do not establish a current, comparable expense-ratio ranking for EWY, FLKR, and KSMX.
- Brokerage and transaction charges: Check commissions, exchange or transaction charges, minimum ticket charges, and any custody fees. Fixed charges can weigh more heavily on small trades, and frequent trading adds costs. EWY filing; FLKR filing.
- Bid-ask spread: The spread is the difference between the price available to buy and the price available to sell. It varies with liquidity and market conditions and is a cost of trading ETF shares. Check the live spread rather than assuming it is fixed. EWY filing; FLKR filing.
- Premium or discount to net asset value (NAV): An ETF’s market price can differ from the value of its underlying holdings. When the Korean market is closed but a U.S.-listed ETF is trading, price discovery is less direct and premiums or discounts may be larger than for a portfolio of U.S.-only holdings. FLKR filing.
- Currency conversion and transfers: If your account uses a different currency from the one required to fund or settle the trade, check the broker’s exchange rate, markup, and conversion timing. Charges depend on the broker and account; compare the actual fee schedule.
- Taxes and withholding: The EWY prospectus states that Korean issuer dividends are generally subject to 22% withholding before any reduction under an applicable income tax treaty. That is a fund-level disclosure, not a universal tax rate for an individual investor. Your own tax treatment depends on residence, account type, treaty eligibility, and local rules. Risks to understand before investing
Won exchange-rate movements
Korean securities are denominated in won. If the won weakens against your home currency, the value of your investment after conversion can fall even if the local share prices rise. Whether a particular fund hedges currency exposure is fund-specific; check its current documents rather than inferring a policy from its name. KSMX filing; FLKR filing.

Country and industry concentration
A South Korea ETF concentrates exposure in one national market rather than spreading it across countries. Economic conditions, export demand, and large industries such as semiconductors and technology can materially affect results. Compare the fund’s current holdings and top-position weights to understand how much its performance may depend on a small number of companies or sectors. KSMX filing; FLKR filing.
Political, security, and governance risks
Fund disclosures identify country-specific legal, regulatory, political, and security risks, including tensions involving North Korea. They also note governance concerns connected with chaebol business groups and controlling shareholders. These risks can affect individual companies and the broader market. FLKR filing.

Liquidity, market hours, and ETF pricing
ETF shares trade at market prices, not at a guaranteed NAV. Thin trading or volatile conditions can widen the spread, while a closed Korean underlying market can make it harder for the ETF price to reflect current values of its holdings. The U.S. ETF’s trading hours also do not match the Korean market’s hours, so the displayed price may incorporate less current underlying-market information. FLKR filing.
Fund-specific implementation
Funds can differ in their use of depositary receipts, derivatives, other funds, turnover, and portfolio concentration. A risk disclosed for one fund should not automatically be attributed to another. Read the current prospectus for the exact product you plan to buy. EWY filing; FLKR filing.

How to compare the U.S.-listed examples
EWY, FLKR, and KSMX are documented examples of U.S.-listed South Korea ETF offerings. Before choosing among them, compare current issuer materials and trading data rather than assuming that a shared country focus means similar cost or diversification.
- Index and the precise exposure the fund seeks.
- Current holdings, top-position weights, and sector concentration.
- Expense ratio and other costs stated in the latest prospectus.
- Fund assets, typical trading liquidity, live spread, and premium or discount behavior.
- Fund structure, including depositary receipts, derivatives, and holdings in other funds.
- Any currency-hedging policy and the fund’s treatment of distributions.
The cited filings establish the named products but do not support a current, like-for-like ranking of their fees, holdings, or liquidity. Use each issuer’s latest documents and current market data for those comparisons.
