The broker sets its own document requirements and charges, so confirm its current NGX status and request an itemized fee estimate before sending money.
First, decide what kind of share purchase you want
A secondary-market trade buys an existing listed share from another market participant through a stockbroker. A public offer or rights issue is different: it is a primary-market subscription for securities being offered by an issuer. NGX Invest is for public offers and rights issues, not a general-purpose interface for buying any listed share on the secondary market.

NGX says investors must appoint a securities dealer or stockbroker that is a registered NGX Trading License Holder to facilitate account opening and trading. Start with the NGX broker directory; the exchange notes that directory categories and statuses can change, so check the current listing and the firm’s identity before sharing documents or transferring funds.

- Compare licensed brokers. Ask about account-opening and minimum-funding requirements, KYC documents, order-entry channels, CSCS or custody arrangements, statements and trade confirmations, support, complaint handling, and current charges for both buying and selling. NGX does not publish one universal retail account minimum on its onboarding page, and each dealer supplies its own KYC requirements.
- Complete the broker’s account-opening process. Submit the documents and personal information requested through the firm’s official process. Do not assume another broker’s checklist or minimum applies to this one.
- Confirm funding and custody details. Follow the broker’s instructions for funding and ask how your CSCS/CHN details and share custody will be handled. NGX says assets may be held through CSCS under an appointed dealer or through a licensed domestic custodian. Account and custody arrangements should be confirmed with the broker rather than inferred from another platform’s sign-up process.
- Submit your order through the broker. Identify the listed company or security, enter the quantity and provide the order instructions supported by that broker. NGX describes its equities market as an electronic order book with price, cross and time priority. Check with the broker how its available order instructions work before submitting an order.
- Save the records. Keep the order confirmation, contract note, funding record and broker or CSCS holding statement so you can check what was executed and what is held.
What documents and accounts do you need?
There is no single NGX-wide retail KYC checklist in the reviewed onboarding guidance: the broker tells you which documents and details it requires. Request the firm’s checklist directly and confirm how it will establish or link the CSCS/CHN and custody details needed for your holdings.

NGX Invest’s registration process is specific to subscriptions through that platform. It requests BVN and lets a new user skip the CHN/CSCS field at initial registration; that does not establish that every broker account can trade without the account setup required by the broker. Do not treat the NGX Invest flow as a universal brokerage-account rule.
How much does it cost to buy or sell NGX shares?
NGX’s public equities market-structure page lists the figures below. The page has no visible publication date and was checked in 2026. NGX separately listed SEC-approved amendments to Trading License Holder pricing methodology on June 16, 2026, but the page introducing those amendments does not show the operative fee schedule in the reviewed text. The table is therefore a transcription of the public NGX page, not a guaranteed current all-in quote.
Rank #2
| Charge shown on NGX’s public fee page | Side and stated rate |
|---|---|
| NGX fee | 0.3% on the sell side |
| CSCS fee | 0.3% on the sell side |
| Trade alert fee | ₦4.00 per side |
| SEC fee | 0.3% on the buy side |
| Stamp duty | 0.08% on each side |
| Brokerage commission | 0.75–1.35% on each side |
| VAT | 7.5% of brokerage and SEC fees on the buy side; 7.5% of NGX, CSCS and brokerage fees on the sell side |
Ask your chosen broker for a written, current breakdown of applicable charges, including taxes, for a purchase and a later sale. Do not treat the listed rates as a single all-in percentage: applicability, rounding, commission and the effect of the 2026 methodology amendments need to be reflected in the broker’s current quote.
How long does settlement take?
For eligible equities cleared and settled by CSCS, the settlement cycle is T+1: one business day after the trade date. SEC Nigeria’s May 14, 2026 circular set the change effective June 1, 2026; its August 12, 2026 clarification states that settlement for equities and commodities settled at CSCS is at 5:00 p.m. T+1, on a delivery-versus-payment basis. Settlement timing does not predict whether a share’s price will rise.
Is NGX Invest the right route?
Use NGX Invest only when applying for a public offer or rights issue available on the platform. Its stated process is to register and verify details, choose an offer and preferred broker, enter a subscription, accept the shelf prospectus pricing supplement and term sheet, and pay. Live offers change; for routine purchases of already-listed shares, arrange an account with a licensed stockbroker instead.

A share represents part ownership of an issuer; potential returns may come from price appreciation or dividends. The price can fall below what you paid, and dividends are not assured: some companies pay them regularly, while others pay rarely or never. The rights attached to ownership depend on the number and class of shares held. Choose based on your own circumstances and risk tolerance, not an assumption of guaranteed income or short-term profit.
