Sony says it is playable on PS5, but a physical PS4 disc requires a PS5 with a disc drive; PS2 and PS3 game discs do not play on PS5. If you are buying used, confirm the listing says PS4 and check the disc, included items, and return terms before paying.
Which version should you buy?
The right choice depends on your console and whether you want a straightforward copy of the game or a collector’s edition. Sony’s PS4 release is a ground-up remake by Bluepoint Games and JAPAN Studio, released on February 6, 2018.

| PS4 standard | Available as a PS4 digital listing and as a physical PS4 disc. Sony says the game is playable on PS5, subject to the compatibility notes below. | Players who want the game without collector packaging or extras. |
| PS4 Special Edition | A physical collector’s edition released at launch in 2018. Sony announced a US launch MSRP of $49.99; this historical price is not a current used-copy valuation. | Collectors who specifically want the edition’s physical items and can verify what a particular listing includes. |
| PS2 or PS3 release | Older-generation versions are not playable from disc on PS5. PS3 compatibility with PlayStation-format software can depend on the exact console model. | Buyers with the appropriate older hardware who have checked its format support. |
Will the PS4 version work on your console?
PS4 disc on PS5
Sony’s product page identifies the PS4 game as playable on PS5, while cautioning that a system update may be needed and some PS4 features may be absent. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance says compatible PS4 Blu-ray discs can be played when a disc drive is installed. A PS5 without a disc drive cannot use a physical copy.
Digital purchase
The US PlayStation Store lists a digital PS4 product. Store availability, price, and subscription-catalog status can vary by region and over time, so check the Store using the account and country where you plan to play before buying.
#1 Best Overall
- Experience the wonder and majesty of an acclaimed and beloved video game, now on PS4 and PS4 Pro
- Helmed by Bluepoint games, the emotion, intensity and beauty of Fumito Ueda's original adventure has been given a staggering makeover
- With improved visuals and enhanced performance, every epic moment is more breath taking and memorable than ever before
- Set on a quest to bring a girl back to life, your task is to bring down 16 gigantic beasts; armed with only your wits, a magical sword and a bow, venture out into expansive landscapes on the back of your trusty steed and seek out each Colossus
- But be warned - While each giant has a specific weakness, finding and exploiting it will be far from simple; a thrilling mixture of exploration, platforming, puzzle-solving and action awaits
PS2 and PS3 discs on PS5
Sony’s PS5 manual states that PS1, PS2, and PS3 format software cannot be played from disc on PS5. Do not buy an older-generation disc expecting it to run on that console.
Playing on an older PS3
Do not assume that every PS3 plays PS2 discs. Sony’s manual for the CECH-43xx series gives a limited-backward-compatibility warning for PlayStation-format software. Check the exact model number on your console and consult its manual; the available compatibility information does not establish a complete PS2/PS3 model chart.
What comes in the PS4 Special Edition?
Sony’s 2017 US launch announcement listed these items for the physical Special Edition:
Recommended Free Tools
- Steelbook collector’s case with outer sleeve
- Artist postcards, printed manual, physical world map, and Colossi stickers
- Digital Ancient Bow, Cloak of Fate, and “Spotted Steed” Agro skin
- Two custom PS4 themes and a PS4 Colossi avatar set
For a used copy, ask for photos of the actual contents and verify which physical items are present. Do not assume digital extras or account entitlements will transfer with a used disc. Sony’s $49.99 US MSRP was the announced launch price in 2017, not evidence of what a complete or incomplete copy should cost now.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before buying a used copy
For a standard PS4 disc
- Confirm the listing explicitly identifies the game as the PS4 version, not a PS2 or PS3 release.
- Ask for clear photos of the disc label and readable side, the case, and any inserts the seller says are included.
- If you will play it on PS5, confirm your console has a disc drive.
- Read the seller’s return terms and include shipping and any applicable fees when comparing the total cost.
For a Special Edition
- Compare the listing’s stated contents with Sony’s original Special Edition list above.
- Ask which physical pieces are actually included and request photos rather than relying on stock images or the edition name alone.
- Treat digital extras as uncertain unless the seller can establish that a usable entitlement is included; do not assume it transfers.
- Check packaging and disc condition, and review return terms before purchase.
Which edition suits your priorities?
- For the simplest route: choose the PS4 edition, digital or disc, based on whether you prefer download access or a physical copy.
- For PS5 disc use: choose a PS4 disc only if your PS5 has a disc drive; otherwise consider the digital PS4 listing available to your account.
- For collecting: focus on a listing that documents the physical Special Edition contents, rather than assuming every used copy is complete.
- For an older release: verify the exact PlayStation console and its supported disc formats before buying.
PS4 Pro display modes
In its 2017 announcement, Sony described two PS4 Pro options: Cinematic mode emphasized image quality and targeted dynamic 4K at 30 fps on a compatible 4K HDR display, while Performance mode targeted 60 fps. These are Sony’s announced targets, not a guarantee of measured performance in every setup.
