How to buy PS5 games digitally and avoid losing access to your account

Buy a digital PS5 game from the PlayStation Store while signed in to the PlayStation account you intend to keep. Confirm that account’s country or region, edition and price, then pay with a locally accepted method or PlayStation Store wallet funds. Protect the account with a passkey or unique password, two-step verification and a reachable recovery email. Keep the purchasing account open: Sony’s US English PlayStation Network Terms of Service (March 2026) describe a Store purchase as a personal license, and closing the account can remove access to purchased content.

If a title later appears locked, verify the purchaser account and transaction first. Then check PlayStation Plus status, Console Sharing and Offline Play, and finally restore licenses. These steps preserve access; they do not turn a digital license into a transferable copy or recover an account that has been deleted.

What you are buying when you buy a digital PS5 game

A PlayStation Store transaction grants the account a license to use the product for private, non-commercial purposes. Sony’s March 2026 US Terms state: “When you order or purchase a product from PlayStation Store, you buy a personal license to use that product for private, non-commercial use.” The license is generally non-transferable. It is tied to the purchasing account and remains subject to the Store’s terms, the title’s availability and any technical requirements.

That distinction matters when planning for the future. A digital purchase is not a transferable game file that can be moved to another account, sold independently or reassigned after an account change. Sony also says that deleting or closing an account may remove access to purchased content. Some third-party games require a separate publisher account; unlinking or deleting that account can also affect access. Keep both the PlayStation account and any required linked account.

Full purchases and PlayStation Plus access are different

A game bought outright through the Store is licensed to the account that completed the transaction. A game obtained through a PlayStation Plus catalog or monthly offering is accessed under the subscription’s conditions. You need an active qualifying subscription where required, and a catalog title can leave the service. If another household member reports a lock, identify which of these two paths supplied the game before changing settings or restoring licenses.

Check these details before spending money

  • Purchasing account: Sign in to the account you intend to retain. Do not buy on a temporary, shared or work account.
  • Country or region: An account’s country or region is selected when the account is created and cannot later be changed under Sony’s Terms. Use the corresponding Store; payment methods, currency, tax treatment and content can differ by region.
  • Edition: Read the product page for the exact edition, included add-ons, upgrade rights, language options and release status. Standard, deluxe and cross-generation editions can contain different entitlements.
  • Price and availability: Prices and availability can change. Confirm the current amount and any recurring element before selecting the final purchase button.
  • Account recovery: Make sure the sign-in email is accessible and that you can receive recovery messages before you buy.
  • Linked accounts: Check whether the game requires a publisher account and keep that account’s credentials and recovery options available.

How to buy a digital PS5 game

1. Sign in to the account that should hold the license

On the PS5, select the intended user and sign in before opening the Store. On the PlayStation App or the web Store, use the same account. Check the account region in account settings if you are unsure. Do not attempt to work around regional restrictions with a different country’s account or voucher: the account region is fixed at creation, and a voucher or payment method may only work in its intended market.

2. Select the exact game and edition

Search for the title in PlayStation Store and open its product page. Check the edition name, platform, release status, included content and current price. If the page lists separate PS4 and PS5 versions, select the version you actually need. Read whether an add-on is included or sold separately. A preorder, a game that has not released, and a currently available title have different download and play timing.

3. Choose a locally supported payment route

Use a payment method accepted by the Store for your account’s country or region, or fund the PlayStation wallet first. Sony’s US wallet guidance says you can add funds with an accepted payment method or a PlayStation Store gift-card voucher. Acceptance is regional, so verify the local Store before buying a card or relying on a particular bank card.

4. Add wallet funds on PS5 when needed

The PS5 funding path is Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Add Funds. Follow the prompts to select an accepted payment method or redeem a voucher. The on-screen labels can vary with software version and region, but the wallet and payment sections are under Account.

5. Complete the transaction and verify it

At checkout, review the account, title, edition, price and payment source. Wallet funds are used first. If the wallet does not cover the total, Sony says the remainder can be paid with another available method. Complete the purchase, then check the confirmation and transaction history. Download from the game page or your Game Library after the transaction shows as completed.

6. Keep the evidence you may need later

Retain the confirmation email and note the transaction details. If the game disappears from the library or shows a padlock, transaction history establishes whether the purchase completed and which account owns the entitlement. A failed, canceled or pending transaction is not the same as a completed purchase.

Payment, wallet and voucher choices

Route How it works What to verify
Direct payment Charge an accepted local payment method during checkout. Whether the card or service is supported for the account’s region, and the final price shown by the Store.
Wallet funds Add money to the PlayStation wallet, then spend the balance. Wallet funds are used before another method; any shortfall can be charged separately. That the balance is on the same purchasing account and is sufficient for the transaction.
Gift-card voucher Redeem a PlayStation Store voucher to add wallet funds, then purchase from the Store. That the voucher was issued for the account’s country or region and is accepted by the local Store.

None of these payment routes protects the account by itself. A voucher can reduce the need to expose a card at checkout, but the wallet balance and resulting license still belong to the account that redeems and spends them. Secure that account and its email regardless of how you paid.

Secure the account before and after the purchase

Use a passkey or a unique strong password

Use a passkey where it is supported. If you use a password, make it long and unique to the PlayStation account. Reusing a password on another service lets a breach there become a sign-in attempt here. A password manager can create and store a unique password; Sony also points to passkeys and password managers as ways to follow good credential practices.

Turn on two-step verification and save the backup codes

Two-step verification can use text messages or an authenticator app, depending on the sign-in setup. During setup, save the backup codes in a secure place that is available when your phone is not. A backup code can help you sign in if the registered phone is lost or unavailable. Do not store the codes in a public note or send them to someone offering unsolicited support.

Protect the sign-in email

The email address on the account is part of the recovery path. Use a secure email account, enable that provider’s own security controls and keep the address current. If you can no longer access the email or cannot remember it, Sony directs users to its support assistant rather than trying random recovery links.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reject unsolicited account-help requests

Do not share your password, verification code, backup code or payment details. Ignore unexpected messages claiming that your account was reported, suspended or selected for an offer. Do not scan an unsolicited QR code or follow a link that asks you to sign in. Open the official PlayStation site or console settings directly instead. Sony warns about false account-report messages, scam offers and requests for sign-in details.

Avoid untrusted devices

Do not sign in on a public or shared device unless there is no alternative. If you must, sign out when finished and remove any saved credentials. Sony provides remote sign-out guidance for situations in which you no longer trust a device; use account management rather than relying on the device owner to log out.

Understand checkout-password compatibility

Where supported, Require Password at Checkout adds a password prompt before a purchase. Sony says this feature is not compatible with accounts using passkeys. Choose the sign-in method and purchase protection that fit your account, and do not assume checkout-password prompts will appear on every configuration.

Do not close the account that owns the games

Account closure is not a harmless cleanup step. Sony warns that deleting or closing an account may cause loss of access to purchased content. Before closing an account, identify every game, add-on and subscription entitlement tied to it; there is no promise that another account can inherit them.

Recover access if you cannot sign in

When you still control the email

  1. On the sign-in screen, choose Trouble Signing In?
  2. Select Recover Your Account and follow the verification prompts sent to the account email.
  3. After regaining access, change the password if you suspect reuse or exposure, review account details and secure the email account as well.

If a passkey exists on another device that uses the same verification method, Sony says you can use that device to sign in and register a new passkey. This is useful when the original phone or computer is unavailable but another enrolled device remains available.

When the phone or authenticator is unavailable

Use one of the backup codes saved when two-step verification was enabled. If you have neither a usable code nor access to the account, Sony says identity verification is required. Contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant rather than accepting help from an unsolicited message.

When account details changed without your approval

If the sign-in ID, online ID or password changed and you did not make the change, treat the account as compromised. Reach the official recovery or support pages directly and use the Online Assistant. Do not keep trying links supplied in suspicious emails or messages. Have your transaction details and other ownership information ready for the support process.

Share games and play offline without changing ownership

PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play lets other users on the enabled PS5 play games and media purchased and downloaded by the account owner, including when that console is offline. Some PlayStation Plus benefits can also be shared. The setting can be enabled on one PS5 at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the feature does

  • It allows household users on the enabled PS5 to launch eligible games purchased by the owner.
  • It supports offline play for downloaded content on that console.
  • It can share some PlayStation Plus benefits, subject to the service’s conditions.
  • It does not move the license to another account or make the purchase transferable.

If the original console is inaccessible, Sony permits remote deactivation of all devices through Account Management. That all-device action is limited to once every six months, so use it deliberately. Afterward, enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the PS5 you actually control.

When another household user sees a lock

Confirm that the purchasing account is present on the PS5 and that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled for that console. If the title came from PlayStation Plus instead of a purchase, confirm that the subscription is active and that the title remains in the service’s available catalog. Changing sharing settings cannot restore a subscription title that has left the catalog.

Fix a purchased game that is locked or missing

  1. Confirm the account. Sign out of any unintended user and sign in to the account that completed the purchase.
  2. Check transaction history. Verify that the transaction completed, rather than remaining pending, failing or being canceled. A confirmation on a different account explains why the current account cannot launch the game.
  3. Identify the access source. If the title was supplied by PlayStation Plus, check subscription status and continued catalog availability. If another household account owns it, check that account’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting.
  4. Restore licenses. On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. Sony says restoration does not affect saved data and can help with padlock icons, missing games or add-ons, and some crashes.
  5. Retry the game. Restart the console and launch the title from the purchasing account or the enabled shared console after the restore completes.
  6. Escalate with useful details. If the lock remains, follow Sony’s game-start troubleshooting and contact support. Include the error code, the exact steps already tried and the transaction information.

Restoring licenses is a catalog-entitlement check, not an account-recovery tool. It cannot replace the purchasing account, undo account closure or recover a compromised account. Use the recovery process separately when sign-in details or the account itself are the problem.

Choose between a Store purchase and PlayStation Plus access

Question Store purchase PlayStation Plus access
What grants access? A personal license assigned to the purchasing account under Store terms. Subscription-based access under the applicable PlayStation Plus conditions.
What can end access? Account closure, loss of account access, title or service changes covered by the terms, or a required linked-account problem. An inactive required subscription or removal of the game from the available catalog, in addition to account or service issues.
Who should troubleshoot first? The account that paid and its transaction history. The subscription account, subscription status and current catalog listing.
Can another PS5 user play it? Yes, on the PS5 where the owner enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play, subject to the feature’s limits. Some benefits may be shared, but the subscription and catalog conditions still apply.

Choose a purchase when you need the specific title under the Store license and accept that the license remains tied to the account. Choose subscription access when the ongoing service conditions and catalog changes fit your use. Neither option is a promise of permanent, transferable ownership.
