How to Buy Physical Gold Safely and Avoid Counterfeit Bars and Coins

Buy from a dealer you can independently check, compare the full cost and buyback terms for the exact gold product, and verify the item against reliable specifications. Treat a home weight or dimension check as a screening step—not proof of authenticity. If a bar or coin still raises doubts, ask a qualified independent precious-metals professional what testing can establish before you buy or sell it.

A safe gold purchase has three separate checks

Buying physical gold safely means evaluating the seller, the economics of the transaction, and the metal or coin itself. Passing one check does not substitute for the others: a familiar coin can be offered on poor terms, a reputable seller can still sell an item that needs inspection, and a precise-looking bar is not proof that its contents are gold.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Seller: Can you verify the business, its history, and the claims it makes about licensing, custody, and delivery?
  • Price and terms: Do you know the premium over the metal’s market value, the dealer’s buyback price, all charges, and what happens if you want to take delivery or sell?
  • Product: Does the item match specifications for its exact type and weight, and is there a credible route to professional verification if needed?

This guide focuses mainly on U.S. consumer guidance from the U.S. Mint, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Dealer rules, taxes, delivery requirements, and consumer protections differ by country; outside the United States, consult your local mint, financial regulator, and consumer-protection authority.

Choose a product by gold content, not appearance

A bullion coin is valued principally by the weight of the precious metal it contains. Its sale price generally combines that metal value with a premium for minting, distribution, and marketing. A coin’s face value or decorative packaging is not the same thing as its gold content or resale value. Ask the dealer to identify the exact product and the actual gold weight in writing.

The U.S. Mint distinguishes bullion coins from proof and uncirculated numismatic products. Numismatic items may be marketed for qualities such as limited mintage, rarity, condition, or age—not just their gold content. Those added claims can make a product harder to value and can mean paying more than a buyer who wants bullion needs to pay. If the purpose is straightforward gold exposure, ask whether a bullion product meets that purpose before considering a collectible premium.

Product What the available specifications say What to check before buying
American Eagle gold bullion coin The U.S. Mint lists one-ounce, one-half-ounce, one-quarter-ounce, and one-tenth-ounce sizes; current product details and availability can change. Confirm the exact size, gold content, Mint-published specifications, premium, and dealer buyback price.
American Buffalo gold bullion coin The U.S. Mint lists a one-ounce size; current product details and availability can change. Confirm the exact product and specifications, then compare price and resale terms with the same coin elsewhere.
Proof or uncirculated numismatic products Value may reflect limited mintage, rarity, condition, or age as well as metal. The Mint’s cited material does not establish a general premium or resale value. Ask what portion of the price is attributed to gold and what portion to collectible characteristics; do not assume the collectible premium will be recovered.
Retail gold bar Retail bars come in different products and sizes. The cited guidance does not establish a universal specification or at-home authentication test for every bar. Verify the precise product, weight, seller’s claims, custody or delivery terms, and what independent testing is available if authenticity is uncertain.

The Mint does not sell bullion coins directly to the public. It distributes them through authorized purchasers, who supply the retail market, and consumers may also encounter them through secondary retailers. An authorized-purchaser role describes a place in the Mint’s distribution system; it does not remove the need to compare the seller, price, and written terms.

Compare the complete cost and the resale spread

Spot is the cash price for immediate delivery of metal, as described in the CFTC and FINRA joint investor bulletin. Retail dealers generally sell bullion above spot and buy it back below spot. The gap between the price at which you can buy and the price at which the dealer will buy back the same metal is the spread. It is a real cost of the transaction, even if a sales quote emphasizes only the premium.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Match like with like. Compare the same product and actual gold weight across sellers. A quote for a different coin, bar size, or collectible product is not a direct comparison.
  2. Ask for the selling price and its components. Request the spot reference used, the premium above it, and any other fees in writing. Check whether shipping, insurance, payment, storage, or account charges apply.
  3. Ask for a current buyback quote. Find out what the dealer would pay for that exact product and what conditions, deductions, or fees affect the quote. A seller’s promise that gold is “easy to sell” is not a substitute for a price.
  4. Calculate the round-trip difference. Compare what you would pay now with the amount the dealer says it would pay under the stated terms. This helps show how much the metal price would need to move before the transaction reaches break-even, without predicting whether it will.
  5. Keep every quote tied to its conditions. Record the date, product, weight, fees, buyback terms, and whether the quoted prices can change. Prices move with the market, so an old quote is not a current offer.

An unusually low price deserves extra scrutiny, not an automatic assumption that you found a bargain. The Mint advises buyers to be especially cautious when a bullion coin is offered below the current market price. Ask how the seller can offer it, verify the product and seller independently, and do not send money until the full terms and delivery or custody arrangement are clear.

The CFTC and FINRA reported in a 2024 joint bulletin that, over the prior decade, the CFTC had charged numerous companies with selling overpriced precious metals to customers, alleging more than $500 million in fraudulent sales. That is an allegation figure tied to the bulletin’s stated period, not a measure of all gold transactions or proof that a particular seller is fraudulent. It does underline why the written price, spread, and fees matter.

Vet the dealer before sending money

Retail precious-metals dealer oversight is not uniform. The CFTC and FINRA state that retail metal dealers are not regulated at the U.S. federal level; that statement does not mean no state or other laws apply. Do not treat a seller’s own statement that it is licensed, approved, or regulated as verification. Ask which authority it means, then check the claim with that authority where applicable.

For an online seller, the CFTC and FINRA advise checking the physical address, time in business, and independent complaints. Look for a consistent business identity and a record that can be assessed outside the seller’s own advertising. A polished website, a phone number, or a claim of being an authorized seller does not by itself establish fair pricing or sound custody.

  • Search for the company’s legal and trade names, address, and relevant complaint history through independent sources.
  • Ask for the exact product description, final price, fees, shipping or storage terms, and buyback policy before purchase.
  • Request substantiation for claims about licensing, insurance, storage, or third-party certification.
  • Use extra caution with classified advertisements and online forums, where seller identity and recourse may be difficult to establish.
  • Walk away if the seller refuses to put material terms in writing or makes it difficult to verify basic claims.

Be wary of unsolicited cold calls, emails, and social-media messages; pop-up sellers; artificial deadlines; and pressure to act before you can compare offers. Claims of guaranteed returns are incompatible with the uncertainty of market prices. The CFTC and FINRA also caution about sales built around “collectible” or “semi-numismatic” value, especially when the pitch uses that language to justify a high price or hurry a decision.

Screen coins against official specifications

The U.S. Mint advises checking whether a bullion coin meets its published weight and diameter specifications and whether its key features are present. It also advises buyers to consider whether the seller guarantees the coin’s weight and precious-metal content or whether a third party has certified it. Use specifications for the exact coin and size; a measurement for one version does not establish the correct measurement for another.

  1. Identify the coin precisely. Confirm the issuing authority, coin name, denomination or product, and stated gold weight. Avoid relying only on a seller’s informal description.
  2. Find the official specifications. Use the issuing mint’s published information for that exact product. Note the required weight, diameter, and relevant visible features.
  3. Compare carefully. A suitable scale and caliper can help compare the coin’s weight and dimensions with those specifications. Handle and measure the coin in a way that avoids damaging it.
  4. Check the result against the seller’s paperwork. Make sure the invoice and description refer to the same item and gold content you inspected.
  5. Pause if anything is uncertain. A mismatch, an unexplained discrepancy, or a seller’s refusal to answer questions is a reason to seek qualified independent help rather than relying on a visual impression.

A scale and caliper are screening tools. They do not test metal composition and cannot certify that an item is genuine. Matching weight, diameter, and visible features does not prove authenticity: a deceptive item may imitate some of those attributes. The cited official guidance does not establish a single reliable do-it-yourself test for every retail coin and bar.

If you need more confidence, ask a qualified independent precious-metals professional what method will be used, what it can determine, and whether the assessment applies to the whole item. Ask about the professional’s credentials and any limits of the result. The cited sources do not identify or compare particular retail assay providers or establish one method as suitable for every product. Do not treat a seller’s certification claim as independent verification without checking who issued it and what it covers.

Understand bar labels and security features

LBMA’s Good Delivery standards support the London wholesale market; they should not be read as a blanket certification for every retail gold bar. LBMA’s guide describes a standard qualifying gold Good Delivery bar as approximately 400 troy ounces and explicitly says that a one-ounce retail bar cannot itself be on the Good Delivery List. A statement that a small bar was made by a refiner on a relevant list is different from a statement that the small bar itself is a Good Delivery bar.

LBMA also describes recognized bar security features as physical features intended to establish a bar’s identity and verify authenticity, like a bar passport linked to its Gold Bar Integrity database. Its specifications and process apply to eligible bars. That does not establish that every retail bar carries such a feature, or that a feature removes the need to examine the seller, documentation, and item. Ask the seller to be precise about whether a claim refers to the bar, its refiner, or a broader wholesale standard.

Choose delivery or third-party storage deliberately

Before paying, decide whether the gold will be delivered to you or held by a third party. These routes have different costs and practical risks. A storage arrangement is only useful if the metal’s location, ownership, access, and charges are clear and the custody claim can be verified.

Arrangement Questions to settle in writing Trade-off to consider
Delivery to you What are shipping and insurance charges? How will delivery be recorded? What happens if the shipment is delayed, lost, or damaged? You hold the item directly, but must consider secure handling and whether your homeowners insurance covers it.
Third-party storage What is the exact storage location? Who is the custodian? What fees apply? What records show your ownership? How can you withdraw or take delivery, and what will it cost? What does insurance cover? Storage may add fees and depends on a third party’s custody and records; the existence and location of the metal must be verifiable.

The CFTC’s consumer brochure notes that home-held metal may not be covered by homeowners insurance, while a bank or storage facility is likely to charge fees. Do not assume that a general insurance statement covers your particular gold, its full value, or every loss. Ask for the scope and conditions of coverage in writing.

CFTC materials warn about purported storage arrangements in which the metal does not exist, as well as agreements that do not identify where the metal is held, claims of overseas storage, missing documentation, and salespeople who cannot substantiate licensing claims. Before agreeing to storage, make sure the contract identifies the metal and the location, documents your ownership, explains access and withdrawal, and states charges and insurance terms. If those details are absent or difficult to verify, do not treat an account statement or salesperson’s assurance as proof of physical custody.

Keep records that connect the purchase to the item

Documentation helps you establish what you bought, what you paid, and what delivery or custody was promised. Keep records together, in a form you can retrieve if you need to make an insurance claim, request withdrawal, question a discrepancy, or sell the metal.

  • The dealer’s legal and trade names and contact details.
  • The invoice, purchase date, exact item description, stated gold content or weight, and price.
  • The spot reference, premium, spread or buyback quote, and itemized fees presented with the offer.
  • The delivery record and shipping or insurance details, or the storage agreement, named custodian, and stated location.
  • Any assay, certification, or product documentation, including who issued it and what it actually covers.
  • Written withdrawal, delivery, and buyback terms, including relevant charges and conditions.

Check that the records describe the same item and amount of gold you received or are entitled to withdraw. A contract that says “gold account” or “storage” without identifying the metal, location, or ownership terms may leave key questions unanswered. Do not rely on verbal promises to fill in material gaps.

Take extra care with retirement-account pitches

A physical-gold purchase through a self-directed individual retirement account involves more than choosing a coin or bar. The CFTC and FINRA warn readers considering a precious-metals IRA rollover to understand fees, commissions, custodian services, and tax consequences. A salesperson’s explanation is not a substitute for reviewing the documents and obtaining advice relevant to your circumstances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High-pressure pitches and expensive collectible products can make the economics and rules harder to assess. Before changing retirement arrangements, identify every party involved and what each charges; understand what the custodian does and does not do; and confirm the tax consequences with a qualified financial or tax professional. Avoid making a substantial retirement-account change based solely on a claim that gold will preserve wealth or outperform a portfolio. The cited guidance does not establish physical gold as a guaranteed investment outcome.

A practical stop-or-proceed checklist

Proceed only when you can answer the relevant questions below without relying on a seller’s pressure or an unverifiable promise.

  • Identity: Have you checked the dealer’s business identity, history, address, and independent complaints?
  • Price: Do you know the exact product’s gold weight, premium, fees, and buyback terms?
  • Item: Can you compare a coin with official specifications, and do you understand that this does not prove composition?
  • Custody: Is delivery or storage clearly documented, including location, ownership, fees, insurance, and access?
  • Records: Will you receive an invoice and records matching the item and terms?
  • Pressure: Can you take time to verify claims and compare offers without being pushed to act immediately?
  • Special arrangements: If a retirement account or collectible premium is involved, have you independently reviewed the extra costs and consequences?

If the seller will not substantiate a material claim, the price cannot be explained, or the storage or delivery arrangement is unclear, stop the transaction until the issue is resolved. If an item already in your possession remains doubtful after a basic specification check, do not describe it as authenticated on that basis alone; seek independent professional assessment.
