For a U.S. buyer, purchasing physical gold means comparing the metal content, the dealer’s complete selling price, the written buy-back offer, and the cost and security of storage. The spot price shown in a market quote is only the starting point: retail products include premiums and other charges, while selling usually means accepting a price below spot.
The safest process is to buy standardized bullion from a dealer you have independently checked, obtain every fee and resale condition in writing, and decide where the metal will be held before sending money. This guide explains coins, bars, premiums, spreads, dealer checks, storage, retirement-account rules, and common fraud warnings. It is general education, not an individualized investment or tax recommendation.

What physical gold is—and what gives it value
The U.S. Mint defines a bullion coin as an investment-grade coin valued by its weight and fineness in a particular precious metal. In practical terms, bullion value starts with how much pure gold the item contains, not with its artwork or marketing story.

Fineness expresses purity. A product’s stated weight and fineness together indicate its gold content. A coin or bar can carry a design, a brand, or a certificate, but those features do not automatically create extra resale value.

Do not confuse bullion with commemorative or numismatic merchandise. Numismatic value can depend on rarity, age, historical significance, condition, and collector demand. The CFTC and FINRA warn that sellers sometimes use the term semi-numismatic; the advisory calls that a made-up industry term without a special legal or investment meaning. A collectible premium is not automatically fraudulent, but you should understand exactly why it is charged and who is expected to pay it when you sell.
Coins or bars: how to choose a format
Coins and bars can both provide exposure to the gold they contain. There is no universal rule, established by the sources cited here, that bars always have lower premiums or that coins always resell more easily. Compare each actual quote instead of relying on a format stereotype.
Standardized bullion coins
The United States Mint lists American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins in one-ounce, one-half-ounce, one-quarter-ounce, and one-tenth-ounce sizes. It also describes the American Buffalo as a one-ounce gold bullion coin. These are examples of standardized formats, not a current ranking of products or dealers.
The Mint says the U.S. government guarantees the weight, content, and purity of its bullion coins. That statement applies to the Mint’s bullion coins; do not extend it to privately minted products, bars, or other merchandise without separate documentation.
Gold bars
Bars are sold in specified weights and finenesses. A bar’s relevant evidence is its marked or documented weight, purity, and the seller’s ability to authenticate and repurchase it. Ask whether the dealer’s buy-back policy differs by refiner, bar size, packaging, or documentation. The available guidance does not establish a standard premium, liquidity advantage, or resale advantage for bars as a class.
Comparison checklist
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the exact gold weight? | It lets you compare products on the same metal basis rather than by the package price. |
| What is the stated fineness? | Weight and purity determine the amount of fine gold represented. |
| What is the delivered price? | The quote should include the dealer premium and every shipping, payment, insurance, or other charge. |
| What will the dealer pay to buy it back? | The resale offer reveals the practical exit price and spread. |
| Are authentication or content guarantees written? | Written terms clarify what happens if the item is rejected or questioned later. |
| What are the return and cancellation terms? | Some orders become difficult or expensive to cancel once a price is locked. |
| Where will it be stored and insured? | Storage, administration, and insurance can materially change the cost of ownership. |
Spot price, premium, and spread
Spot price is a reference, not your checkout price
The CFTC defines spot as the cash price for immediate delivery, quoted in dollars per troy ounce. A retail coin or bar represents a particular amount of gold, so the spot value of that content is only the starting calculation.

The Mint explains that bullion coins are priced from the prevailing market price of the metal plus a premium for minting, distribution, and marketing. A dealer may also add shipping, payment-processing, insurance, or other transaction charges.
Use the all-in retail price
For comparison, calculate the complete amount you would pay, not just the advertised coin or bar price:
- Identify the product’s fine-gold content.
- Multiply that content by the current spot quotation used for the dealer’s price.
- Identify the premium above that metal value.
- Add every stated delivery, payment, insurance, and administrative charge.
- Record how long the quotation remains valid and what can change before payment clears.
Do not treat an old example as a current quote. The CFTC advisory uses a hypothetical $2,000 spot price and a half-ounce coin to explain the arithmetic; it is a teaching example, not a market price for 2026.
Understand the spread before buying
A dealer normally sells above spot and buys back below spot. The difference between the amount you pay and the amount you can receive is the practical spread. The premium alone does not describe your exit cost, because the buy-back price may also be below spot and separate fees may apply.
Ask the dealer for the actual current buy-back price for the exact product, in writing. Ask whether the offer assumes intact packaging, a particular brand, a minimum quantity, an account relationship, or an appointment. The gold price must rise enough to cover the purchase premium, the resale discount, and your holding costs before a nominal increase becomes a realized profit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA disciplined way to compare quotes
Request comparable quotes for the same fine-gold amount. A one-ounce coin, a half-ounce coin, and a bar of a different weight cannot be compared by sticker price alone.

The table deliberately leaves live commercial values blank: premiums, buy-back prices, taxes, and storage charges change by product, dealer, jurisdiction, and date. Fill it with dated written quotes rather than using a generic online price.
How to vet a bullion dealer
The U.S. Mint does not sell its bullion coins directly to retail customers. It distributes them through authorized purchasers, who create a two-way market with wholesalers, financial institutions, and secondary retailers. The Mint recommends finding a local or national coin and precious-metal dealer.
The CFTC and FINRA advisory says retail metal dealers are not regulated at the federal level. That makes independent checking especially important.

- Look for an established business with a verifiable physical location and operating history.
- Check local consumer organizations and search the state attorney general or securities regulator for complaints.
- Ask for the exact product, weight, fineness, total price, and buy-back terms before agreeing to purchase.
- Request a written invoice that identifies the item and every fee.
- Confirm how the dealer authenticates incoming metal and how it handles a disputed item.
Checks for an online dealer
- Verify the business address, telephone number, ownership information, and length of operation independently.
- Search for complaints, lawsuits, or criminal allegations associated with the business owners or salespeople.
- Read payment, shipping, cancellation, return, and buy-back terms before entering payment details.
- Call the published number and ask the same questions in writing so the answers can be retained.
- Compare the quote with at least two other dealers using the same product and fine-gold amount.
Questions to ask before sending money
- What exactly am I buying, including mint or refiner, weight, and fineness?
- What is today’s all-in price, and how long is it valid?
- What shipping, payment, cancellation, return, insurance, or administrative charges apply?
- What is your current buy-back price for this exact item, and are there conditions?
- If you will store the metal, where is it held, who owns it, and what document proves my ownership and custody?
- Who provides insurance, what exclusions apply, and how are claims handled?
Buying step by step
- Define the purpose. Decide whether you want direct possession, a long-term holding, a gift, or a retirement-account transaction. These choices affect storage and documentation.
- Choose a standardized product. Start with a clearly identified bullion coin or bar whose weight and fineness you can compare with other quotes.
- Collect dated quotes. Obtain the all-in purchase price and the exact buy-back offer for the same item from multiple dealers.
- Calculate the entry and exit gap. Compare the amount paid with the written buy-back amount and list all holding costs that will accrue between those two events.
- Vet the seller. Complete the complaint, address, history, and ownership checks before paying.
- Read the contract. Confirm price-lock rules, payment deadlines, delivery method, cancellation rights, return conditions, and dispute procedures.
- Pay through a traceable method. Retain the invoice, confirmation, shipping record, and every written communication.
- Inspect on arrival. Check the packaging, item description, weight markings, and documentation against the invoice. If something differs, contact the dealer promptly under the written procedure.
- Document custody. Record serial numbers where applicable, photographs, purchase date, cost, and storage location. Keep this information separately from the metal.
Safe storage and insurance
Storing at home
A home safe is an equipment category, not a guarantee of security or insurance. The available guidance does not establish a recommended safe model, security rating, installation method, or insurance result.
The CFTC warns that home-stored metal may not be covered by a standard homeowners policy. Ask your insurer in writing whether bullion is covered, under what limit, and for which risks. Do not assume that a general personal-property limit protects the full value of a gold holding.
Consider who knows the metal is present, how access is controlled, how records are protected, and what happens if you move or sell the property. Avoid publishing your storage location or sharing unnecessary details with salespeople or acquaintances.

Third-party storage
Professional storage can reduce the need to keep valuable metal at home, but it introduces fees and custody questions. Before agreeing, obtain the facility’s legal name and physical location, the ownership record you will receive, the insurance provider and exclusions, withdrawal and delivery charges, audit or inventory procedures, and the conditions for selling or transferring the metal.

The CFTC has warned about fraud cases in which customers were charged storage or insurance fees for metal that did not exist. Require documentation showing that the metal exists, is allocated or otherwise identified as promised, and is held for you under enforceable terms.
Self-directed retirement accounts
Retirement-account ownership is different from buying metal personally. The CFTC and FINRA advisory says metals in a self-directed IRA must be held by the IRA trustee or custodian. Do not have the metal shipped to your home or treat an IRA purchase as ordinary personal storage.
Rollover, contribution, distribution, prohibited-transaction, and tax rules are complex and can change. Obtain current IRS information and advice from a qualified tax professional before moving retirement funds. This guide does not determine whether a particular transaction is permissible or tax-efficient.

- Dealer premium: the amount above the spot value of the gold content.
- Shipping and handling: delivery charges and any required signature or special handling.
- Payment costs: card, bank-transfer, wire, or other processing charges.
- Insurance: coverage during shipment or storage, with exclusions and limits that must be checked.
- Storage and administration: recurring charges for a vault, account, inventory, statements, or withdrawals.
- Resale discount and commissions: reductions or fees applied when you sell.
- Taxes: sales-tax treatment varies by jurisdiction and product. The available sources do not provide state-by-state rates or rules, so check current state and local guidance before ordering.
Keep a complete cost record. A price increase that looks profitable on a chart may not cover the original premium, selling spread, storage, insurance, taxes, and other transaction costs.

Fraud warnings and high-pressure sales tactics
The CFTC and FINRA advise against responding to unsolicited calls, emails, postal mail, advertisements, or social-media pitches about precious metals. A polished presentation, limited-time claim, or promise of safety does not replace independent verification.

- You will receive one coin per purchase
- Be cautious when a salesperson refuses to state the all-in price or buy-back offer in writing.
- Be cautious when the product is described mainly through rarity, celebrity, or an urgent scarcity story rather than weight and fineness.
- Be cautious when a seller discourages comparison shopping or asks you to keep the transaction secret.
- Be cautious when storage or insurance charges are collected without clear proof of the metal’s existence and custody.
- Be cautious when a rollover or self-directed IRA is presented as simple, guaranteed, or tax-free without explaining the custodian and applicable rules.
The advisory reports that, over the past decade, the CFTC charged numerous companies over precious-metal sales alleged to total more than $500 million in fraudulent sales. That aggregate is an enforcement figure, not a probability estimate for your purchase and not a current-year loss total.
Planning the eventual sale
Decide your exit process before buying. Keep the dealer’s written buy-back terms, but do not assume you must sell to the original seller. Ask other established dealers for competing bids on the same item, compare net proceeds after shipping and commissions, and confirm how the metal will be inspected and paid for.
Preserve invoices and custody records. They help establish what you own, what you paid, and whether the item matches the description. If packaging, certificates, or serial numbers affect a dealer’s offer, store them securely and ask about that condition before purchase.
Do not base a sale decision on spot price alone. Your relevant figure is the net amount you would receive after the dealer’s buy-back discount and every selling expense, compared with your complete acquisition and holding cost.
What a prudent purchase file contains
- Dated quote showing product, weight, fineness, premium, and all-in price.
- Written buy-back price and conditions for the exact product.
- Dealer identity, address, contact details, and complaint-check notes.
- Invoice, payment confirmation, shipping record, and delivery acknowledgment.
- Photographs and serial-number records where applicable.
- Storage contract, ownership or custody statement, insurance terms, and fee schedule.
- Personal cost ledger for purchase, storage, insurance, taxes, and sale.
Keeping this file makes it easier to detect discrepancies, compare a future sale offer, support an insurance claim, and explain the holding to your heirs or tax adviser.
