Buy through the marketplace’s own checkout, inspect evidence of the actual game, and check the exact return and buyer-protection terms before paying. Save the listing and messages, then act within the platform’s claim deadlines if the game does not arrive or is materially different from what was advertised.
How can you tell whether a physical game listing is trustworthy?
No photo or seller rating can guarantee that a game is authentic or in the condition described. Treat the listing as a set of claims to verify: what is pictured, what is included, who is selling it, and what recourse applies to this particular transaction.

Inspect the actual item and what comes with it
Look for multiple clear photographs of the game being sold, not just stock images. The FTC advises: “If you don’t see pictures of the actual item, you can’t check its condition or be sure the seller really has it.” Photos can help you assess visible condition and apparent possession, but they are not an official authenticity test.

Read the full description and check whether the game is used, refurbished, sold “as is,” or incomplete. Confirm details that matter to you, such as the region or version and whether the case, cover, manual, or other components are included. If a detail is missing, ask the seller for clarification and additional photos through the marketplace’s messaging system.

Assess the seller, not just the star rating
Review recent buyer feedback and comments in context. A high star rating alone is not conclusive: reviews and ratings can be misleading or fake. Check the seller’s contact details and search the marketplace and seller name alongside terms such as “complaint” or “review.” Ask questions before buying, and keep the answers in writing on the platform.
An unusually low price on an expensive game is a reason to investigate further, not proof of a bargain. The FTC identifies very low prices as a possible counterfeit warning sign in online shopping.

What should you check before choosing between listings?
Compare the details that affect both the item and your ability to resolve a problem. A cheaper listing may not be the better choice if its condition is unclear, shipping costs more, or its return terms offer less recourse.

- Completeness and condition: Does the written description match the photos and specify what is included?
- Seller history and communication: Are recent reviews informative, and does the seller answer questions clearly?
- Total cost: Include shipping fees when comparing prices.
- Returns and protection: Check the rules for the item, seller, payment method, and transaction type—not just a marketplace’s general reputation.
Marketplace protections differ. Some platforms leave payment, refunds, and delivery disputes to buyers and sellers; others provide a process for eligible non-delivery or items that do not match their descriptions. Read the applicable terms and identify the deadline to request a return, ask the marketplace for help, or dispute the charge with your payment provider.

How should you pay for a game online?
Use the marketplace’s checkout and supported payment flow. Moving the transaction off-platform can cost you marketplace protections. The FTC’s guidance is direct: “Don’t buy from anyone who wants you to pay outside the marketplace’s payment system.”
Where available, favor a credit card or a secure payment option that provides buyer protection. Do not pay a seller who demands a wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency. Before checkout, save a copy of the listing, its terms and photos, the order confirmation, and your messages with the seller.

What should you do if the game never arrives or is not as described?
- Document the issue. Save the order details and listing. If the item arrived but differs from the description, photograph the game and any missing, damaged, or discrepant components.
- Contact the seller promptly. Use the marketplace’s messaging system so the conversation is recorded. Clearly explain what went wrong and what resolution you are requesting.
- Use the marketplace’s dispute or return process. If the seller does not resolve the issue, report it through the platform. Check the applicable deadline rather than waiting indefinitely for a reply.
- Contact your card issuer if you paid by card. Ask about the process and time limit for disputing the charge; payment-provider deadlines can be separate from marketplace deadlines.
- Report suspected dishonest conduct. Report it to the marketplace. In the United States, consumers can also report suspected scams to the FTC, which directs consumers to their state attorney general.
How long do you have to file a marketplace claim?
There is no single deadline for every marketplace or transaction. The return period and claim window can depend on the platform, seller, item, and payment route. Check the live terms before paying, note the last day for each available remedy, and start a claim promptly if a problem occurs.
Example: Amazon Pay’s A-to-z Guarantee
Amazon Pay’s A-to-z Guarantee page says eligible qualifying third-party transactions may be covered for timely delivery and item condition, including certain cases of non-delivery, damage, defects, or material differences from the description. The policy also lists excluded transactions and other conditions. For an item that is damaged, defective, or materially different, it specifies contacting the seller within 14 days after receiving it. That timing applies to the policy’s stated situation; coverage depends on the transaction and current terms. It should not be assumed to cover every Amazon marketplace order or purchases on other platforms.

What does U.S. marketplace seller verification mean for buyers?
The INFORM Consumers Act took effect in the United States on June 27, 2023. As the FTC explains, it imposes identity-verification, disclosure, and reporting duties on covered online marketplaces and qualifying high-volume third-party sellers. Some disclosure duties depend on separate sales-revenue thresholds, and coverage rules and exemptions matter.
These legal requirements are not a certification that a particular game is authentic, complete, or accurately described. Do not assume every seller must display a street address or that appearing on a marketplace means a listing has been verified.
