Buy a digital game through Nintendo eShop on your console or Nintendo.com while signed in to the Nintendo Account that should own it. Before paying, verify the destination console, the game’s required download space, and your country’s available payment methods. Nintendo’s U.S. policy says digital payments are generally final and non-refundable, subject to Nintendo-authorized exceptions and applicable law.
This guide covers the complete purchase process, storage planning, account ownership, virtual game cards, pre-orders, failed downloads, and cancellation limits. Payment options and consumer rights vary by country; refund details quoted here are specifically from Nintendo of America’s U.S. policy.

What you need before buying
A smooth digital purchase depends on four things: the correct Nintendo Account, a compatible console, enough free storage, and a payment method offered in your region.
- Nintendo Account: Digital purchases are attached to the account used at checkout and cannot be transferred to another account.
- Console access: Nintendo.com purchases require that the account has opened Nintendo eShop on a Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console at least once.
- Storage: The destination console must have enough available memory for the game and any required download data.
- Internet: The console needs an internet connection to download the title. It can remain in sleep mode if the connection stays active.
Nintendo.com’s digital purchase service is listed for Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and the United States. Storefront features, payment methods, taxes, currency, and legal cancellation rights can differ outside the United States.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the right Nintendo Account
Decide which account should permanently retain the game before you open the checkout screen. Nintendo ties the license to the Nintendo Account that makes the purchase, not to the console, the person who happens to use the console, or a particular microSDXC card.
For an individual player
Sign in with the account you normally use for your own games. If several accounts are present on the console, check the account name and icon carefully before confirming payment.
For a family or shared console
Use the account intended to manage the household’s digital library. A purchase made by a child’s account, a temporary account, or a second adult account remains attached there. Nintendo does not provide a transfer process for moving a digital title to another account later.

Buying on Nintendo Switch
- Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
- Select the Nintendo Account that should own the game.
- Find the title and open its product page.
- Check the platform, description, and download requirements. Confirm that the listing is for the Switch-family system you intend to use and note the required storage.
- Choose the purchase option and review the price, account, and payment source.
- Complete checkout using account funds or a payment method offered for your country.
- Leave the console connected. Released games normally begin downloading after purchase. The download can finish while the console is in sleep mode if it has an active internet connection and sufficient free space.
The purchase is recorded on the selected Nintendo Account. If the download is interrupted, the license remains associated with that account and the title can be downloaded again without paying a second time.
Buying on Nintendo.com
Nintendo.com is useful when you want to purchase from a phone or computer, but it has an important prerequisite: the Nintendo Account must already have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console at least once.
- Sign in to Nintendo.com with the account that should own the game.
- Open the game’s product page and review the platform, download size or requirements shown there, edition, and release status.
- Select a destination console. Nintendo sends the purchase to the console chosen during checkout.
- Confirm the account and payment details before placing the order.
- Finish checkout. The game is automatically assigned for download to the selected console.
- Keep the destination console online. It must have enough memory and either be powered on or in sleep mode with an active connection for the download to complete.
If the console does not start downloading, check its internet connection, download queue, and available space in System Settings > Data Management. Nintendo also advises checking download progress from the HOME Menu.

| Where you buy | Useful when | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo eShop on the console | You are already using the console and want the download to begin there. | The selected user is the intended owner, and the console has enough space. |
| Nintendo.com | You prefer a phone or computer, or want to purchase while away from the console. | The account has opened eShop on a Switch-family console and the correct destination console is selected. |
Both routes attach the title to the Nintendo Account used at checkout. Buying on the website does not create a separate web-only license, and buying on the console does not make the game transferable to another account.

Payment methods and country limits
Nintendo lists different payment methods by country, so do not assume that an option visible in one storefront will appear in another.
| Payment method | Availability stated by Nintendo | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Account balance | Listed for Nintendo.com purchases in the Americas storefronts covered by Nintendo | Balance is spent from the Nintendo Account used at checkout. |
| Nintendo eShop Cards | Listed as a funding option | Cards and redemption rules are generally region-specific; check the local store. |
| Visa or Mastercard | Listed for the United States and Canada, including eligible debit or gift cards | The card must correspond to the country supported by the storefront. |
| Discover | Listed for the United States and Canada | Not a universal option in every country. |
| PayPal | Listed for the United States, Canada, and Mexico | Availability depends on the local Nintendo storefront and PayPal account. |
Nintendo says the storefront accepts credit cards corresponding to that country. If a card is declined, verify the billing country, account region, card details, and whether your bank permits the transaction; switching to a payment method actually listed for your local store may be necessary.
Choosing between payment methods
Account funds and eShop Cards can help you limit spending to a prepaid amount. A card or PayPal account may be more convenient for a larger purchase, but availability and verification depend on the country. Whichever method you use, check the final amount and currency shown by your local storefront before confirming. Do not buy a card for one region expecting it to redeem in another unless Nintendo specifically says it is compatible.

Storage: how much room a digital game needs
Digital games use the console’s internal storage or a compatible microSDXC card. Nintendo’s Switch specifications state that the standard Nintendo Switch has 32 GB of internal storage and the Nintendo Switch OLED model has 64 GB. Some of that capacity is reserved for system use, so the usable amount is lower than the number printed on the box.
| System | Internal storage stated by Nintendo | Expansion |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | 32 GB, with some space reserved for system use | microSDXC cards up to 2 TB, sold separately |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | 32 GB, with some space reserved for system use | microSDXC cards up to 2 TB, sold separately |
| Nintendo Switch OLED model | 64 GB, with some space reserved for system use | microSDXC cards up to 2 TB, sold separately |
These are Nintendo’s compatibility and capacity limits, not a recommendation that every player buy a particular card. Choose capacity based on the size of your library, how often you download large titles, and your budget. Nintendo’s stated ceiling is 2 TB; it does not identify one universally best capacity or speed.
How to choose a microSDXC card
Start with the library you expect to keep installed rather than buying solely by the largest number on the package. Compare the card’s capacity with your budget, confirm that it is microSDXC and compatible with Nintendo Switch, and buy from a reputable seller with a clear warranty. Nintendo’s specification establishes the supported format and 2 TB ceiling; it does not rank brands or declare a required speed for every game.
A card is optional. You can keep a smaller installed selection, remove software when space runs out, and redownload purchased titles later. The better choice depends on whether you value a larger installed library or prefer to spend less initially.
Check space before checkout
- Open the game’s product page and note its required download size.
- On the console, open System Settings > Data Management and check available space.
- Leave room for updates and other content rather than matching the requirement exactly.
- If internal storage is insufficient, install a compatible microSDXC card before downloading or remove software you no longer need.
Removing a downloaded title makes room without deleting your ownership. Nintendo says purchased or redeemed titles appear among virtual game cards and can be downloaded again at no additional cost by the account that owns them.

What happens after payment
For a released game, Nintendo begins the download after purchase when the destination console is online and has enough space. A console that is offline cannot complete the transfer, even though the purchase itself has already been recorded.
If the game does not appear, check the HOME Menu download indicator, confirm that the console is connected to the internet, and review free space under Data Management. Make sure you are looking at the console selected during a Nintendo.com purchase and that the active user is the purchasing account when checking the virtual game cards.
If you deliberately remove the software later, that is different from deleting the purchase. The license stays with the account, so the owner can download the title again without another charge. Re-downloading still requires a compatible console, an internet connection, and enough available memory.

Pre-orders and preloading
Nintendo says a pre-order is charged no sooner than seven days before release. After payment is processed, the console can preload a non-playable version of the game. A small release-day update is required before you can start playing.
When a Nintendo.com pre-order can be canceled
Nintendo’s purchase FAQ says a Nintendo.com pre-order can be canceled before payment is processed and before the preload occurs, up to seven days before release. Once that processing and preload window has passed, the normal final-sale rule applies unless Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law provides another right.
Because the exact processing date matters, do not wait until release week if you already know you do not want the game. Check the order status in your Nintendo Account and use the cancellation control while it is still available. A pre-order is not the same as an immediate playable download: the preloaded file remains unavailable until release and its required update is installed.
Digital ownership on multiple consoles
Nintendo’s current support terminology uses virtual game cards rather than relying only on older “primary” and “non-primary” console explanations. One Nintendo Account can have virtual game cards loaded on up to two consoles.
When a virtual game card is loaded
Once the purchasing account loads a virtual game card on one of those consoles, any user on that console can play the title, subject to the game’s own software requirements.

Using a third console
On a console outside the two that can load the account’s virtual game cards, the purchasing account can access its games under Nintendo’s stated conditions, including an internet connection. Other users on that console cannot play those purchases through the purchasing account’s license.
For a household with two systems, decide which two consoles should load the virtual game cards before moving cards between them. The practical rule is simple: buy with the account that should own the game, then configure the two consoles that need the broadest offline and multi-user access. Do not assume that adding another user profile or moving the microSDXC card grants that user ownership.
Refunds, cancellations, and final-sale risk
Nintendo of America’s U.S. Digital Products Refund Policy states: “Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Nintendo Account services (including pre-purchases and subscription payments) are final and non-refundable.” Nintendo’s purchase FAQ likewise says digital sales are final, while identifying the pre-order cancellation window described above.

The game was bought but is not downloading
- Confirm that the console selected during Nintendo.com checkout is the one you are using.
- Check the HOME Menu for an active or paused download.
- Test the internet connection and leave the console powered on or in sleep mode with connectivity enabled.
- Open System Settings > Data Management and verify that enough space remains.
- Check virtual game cards while signed in to the purchasing Nintendo Account.
There is not enough storage
- Remove software or other data you no longer need to free space.
- Use a compatible microSDXC card, supported up to 2 TB according to Nintendo’s Switch FAQ.
- Recheck the product page for the required download size and leave additional room for updates.
The wrong account was used
Digital purchases cannot be transferred to a different Nintendo Account. Contact Nintendo Support promptly if the transaction was genuinely unauthorized or if local law may provide a remedy, but do not assume that changing the console’s user will move ownership.
A payment method is rejected
Verify that the payment method is supported in your country, that the card’s country matches the storefront, and that your billing information is current. Nintendo’s listed options differ between the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other supported countries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe game is on another console
Review which destination console was selected during a Nintendo.com purchase and whether the purchasing account has loaded its virtual game card on the console you are checking. On a third console, the purchasing account may need an internet connection, and other users cannot automatically use that account’s purchases.

A pre-purchase checklist
- Is the correct Nintendo Account signed in?
- Has that account opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch-family console if buying through Nintendo.com?
- Is the selected destination console correct?
- Does the console have enough available storage after accounting for reserved system space?
- Is a compatible microSDXC card installed if additional capacity is needed?
- Is the payment method available for the storefront country?
- Are you comfortable with Nintendo’s final-sale policy and the limited pre-order cancellation window?
Checking these items before payment prevents the most difficult problems: ownership attached to the wrong account, a download sent to the wrong console, insufficient storage, and an unwanted purchase that cannot ordinarily be refunded.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy a Nintendo Switch game from my phone or computer?
Yes. Use Nintendo.com while signed in to the Nintendo Account that should own the game. That account must have opened Nintendo eShop on a Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch at least once, and you must select the destination console during checkout.
Can I move a digital game to another Nintendo Account?
No. Nintendo ties the purchase to the account used at checkout and does not provide a transfer process. Adding another user or moving a microSDXC card does not change ownership.
How much storage does a Nintendo Switch have?
Nintendo lists 32 GB for Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite and 64 GB for the Switch OLED model. Some internal space is reserved for system use. Switch-family systems support compatible microSDXC cards up to 2 TB, sold separately.
Can I redownload a game after deleting it?
Yes. Nintendo says purchased or redeemed titles appear among virtual game cards and can be downloaded again by the owning account at no additional cost, provided the console has internet access and enough space.
What payment methods can I use?
Nintendo lists account balance and eShop Cards, plus country-specific card options. Visa or Mastercard and Discover are listed for the United States and Canada, while PayPal is listed for the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Check your local storefront because availability varies.
Can I cancel a Nintendo Switch pre-order?
A Nintendo.com pre-order can be canceled before payment is processed and before preload occurs, up to seven days before release, according to Nintendo’s purchase FAQ. After that point, the normal final-sale rule generally applies.
Recommended Free Tools
Can other users play my digital games?
When your virtual game card is loaded on one of the up to two consoles associated with your Nintendo Account, any user on that console can play the title, subject to the software’s requirements. On a third console, access is more limited and requires the purchasing account to meet Nintendo’s conditions, including internet access.
Are Nintendo digital purchases refundable?
Nintendo of America’s U.S. policy says payments are generally final and non-refundable, except where Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires another remedy. Local rules may differ, so check the policy for your country.
The Bottom Line
Buy with the Nintendo Account that should own the game, confirm the destination console and required storage, and use a payment method supported by your local storefront. Nintendo lists 32 GB of internal storage for Switch and Switch Lite, 64 GB for the OLED model, and microSDXC expansion up to 2 TB. Digital sales are generally final under Nintendo’s U.S. policy, while eligible Nintendo.com pre-orders can be canceled before processing and preload, up to seven days before release.
