To buy Nintendo from Europe, use a broker that accepts clients in your country and offers either Nintendo’s ordinary shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) or the NTDOY American depositary receipt (ADR). Tokyo shares trade in Japanese yen; NTDOY trades over the counter in US dollars and represents four depositary receipts for one ordinary share. Your real cost is the commission plus any minimum, exchange or clearing charge, custody or dividend fee, and the broker’s currency-conversion spread. Confirm the live order ticket, trading-unit rule, order types, route and validity before submitting an order.
What you can actually buy
Nintendo’s 2025 annual report identifies its common shares as listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime Market. A European investor therefore has to distinguish the Tokyo ordinary share from a different US instrument, NTDOY. The two routes are not interchangeable: they have different venues, trading currencies, access rules, hours, liquidity and possible charges.

| Instrument | Venue | Trading currency | Relationship to Nintendo ordinary shares | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo ordinary share | Tokyo Stock Exchange, Prime Market | JPY | The company’s listed common share | That your broker offers the Tokyo listing to residents of your country, the exact security code shown in its ticket, the trading unit, price increment and supported order types |
| NTDOY ADR | US over-the-counter market | USD | Citi’s depositary information states that four depositary receipts represent one ordinary share | Whether your broker permits this OTC ADR for your residence, its commission and minimum, liquidity, ADR/depositary charges, dividend handling and order validity |
Do not assume that every European broker provides either instrument, or that the ADR is cheaper. Availability depends on the broker entity serving your residence, your account classification and the instrument permissions enabled for that account.
Which route is usually the practical starting point?
Tokyo ordinary shares
The Tokyo route gives direct exposure to the listed ordinary share, but the trade is in JPY. You need a broker with access to the TSE and a way to fund or convert into yen. TSE sessions documented by Japan Exchange Group (JPX) are 9:00–11:30 and 12:30–15:30 Japan time. Those are exchange sessions, not a promise that your broker accepts orders continuously through them.

NTDOY ADR
NTDOY can be operationally simpler for an account that already holds US dollars, but it is a separate OTC security. Four NTDOY receipts correspond to one ordinary share according to Citi. Its price, spread, trading activity, market hours and charges can differ from the Tokyo listing. A broker may restrict OTC trading or exclude it for particular European residents, so search the live instrument list rather than relying on a web search or a product name alone.
Check eligibility before depositing money
Country of residence is the first filter. Brokers use different legal entities and permissions, so a service available to one European resident may not be available to another. Ask or verify all of the following in the account’s instrument-availability page:
- Whether the account can trade Japanese equities on the TSE, and whether it can trade US OTC securities such as NTDOY.
- Whether the account is cash, margin or another type, and whether that changes access to either route.
- Whether the broker supports the required trading unit or only whole-share orders.
- Whether market-data subscriptions are needed to see live prices.
- Whether the broker accepts JPY or USD as a directly held cash balance, or automatically converts from euros, pounds or another base currency.
- Whether custody, inactivity, dividend-processing or depositary fees apply to this security.
Do not fund an account until the instrument appears as tradable for your account. A quote page can exist even when the order button is disabled for your country.
Step-by-step: placing a Nintendo order from Europe
- Choose the route. Decide whether you are evaluating the Tokyo ordinary share or NTDOY. Record the exact instrument name, ticker or code and venue shown by your broker. Do not select an similarly named derivative, contract for difference or fund if your intention is to own a share or ADR.
- Set the same trade value for comparisons. Write down the amount you intend to invest in your home currency and the approximate number of shares or receipts you want. Comparing one route at €1,000 and another at an unrelated amount produces a misleading fee result.
- Read the broker’s tariff for your account. Capture the commission, minimum per order, exchange or clearing pass-through, custody charge, inactivity charge, dividend fee and any market-data fee. Save the date and the account entity because schedules change.
- Check currency handling. For Tokyo shares, determine whether the broker converts your euros or pounds automatically, lets you convert manually into JPY, or requires a JPY balance. For NTDOY, perform the same check for USD. Record both an explicit conversion fee and the quoted exchange-rate spread.
- Fund the account in an accepted currency. Allow for the possibility that a deposit in your home currency will not equal the cash available for the order after conversion. Some brokers reserve cash for commissions and local charges, so leave a small buffer rather than funding exactly the displayed share value.
- Open the live order ticket. Confirm the venue, currency, instrument description, displayed price, trading unit, minimum quantity, tick or price increment, order types and duration choices. Check whether the ticket shows a separate FX transaction or an all-in estimate.
- Select an order type and enter the quantity. Use a limit price when controlling the maximum purchase price matters; use a market order only when you accept the price uncertainty described by the broker. Enter the order duration supported by the ticket, such as a session-only or another stated validity, rather than assuming an order remains active indefinitely.
- Review the final estimate. Look for commission, minimum charges, FX rate, spread, local-market fees and the estimated cash debit. Confirm that the order is routed to the intended TSE or OTC venue and that the quantity meets its trading-unit rule.
- Submit and monitor. An order can remain pending, be partially filled, expire or be rejected. Check the status, fills and any separate currency transaction. Keep the contract note and fee breakdown so you can reconcile the final debit in both the trade currency and your home currency.
What fees will you pay?
There is no single European Nintendo-trading fee. JPX states that securities-company transaction charges are set by each broker. The relevant comparison is the all-in cost for your country, account, order size and route.
| Cost item | Tokyo ordinary share | NTDOY ADR | How to check it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brokerage commission and minimum | Broker-specific; not stated by the exchange | Broker- and OTC-schedule-specific | Read the tariff for the legal entity and account type that serves you; note whether the minimum applies per order or per execution |
| Exchange, clearing or local-market charge | May be included or passed through according to the broker’s schedule | May be included or passed through under the OTC schedule | Look for a separate line in the tariff and in the order preview |
| Currency conversion | JPY conversion from your funding currency, with a possible spread and explicit fee | USD conversion for a non-USD investor, with a possible spread and explicit fee | Compare the broker’s quoted rate with a neutral reference at the same time and record both spread and fixed charge |
| Custody, account or inactivity charge | Not stated; account-specific | Not stated; account- and instrument-specific | Check the account-fee schedule, including any minimum balance or monthly conditions |
| Dividend or depositary processing | Broker-specific dividend handling and possible processing fee | Possible ADR/depositary and dividend-processing charges | Read the corporate-actions and depositary-fee sections before buying |
| Market-data fee | Possible charge for live TSE data | Possible charge for live OTC data | Check whether the displayed quote is delayed and whether a subscription is required |
A published Japan pricing schedule from an international broker illustrates why commission and currency conversion must be treated as separate dimensions; it is not a universal quote for every European client, account or order. Do not turn one broker’s example into a market-wide figure.

A fee worksheet you can calculate yourself
For each route, enter the same intended order value and use this structure:
All-in cost = commission (or minimum) + exchange/clearing/local charges + explicit FX fee + FX spread cost + custody/account charges allocated to the trade + dividend or depositary charge, if applicable

The FX spread cost is the difference between the broker’s conversion rate and the rate you use as a comparison, multiplied by the amount converted. Ask whether the broker applies the spread to the full converted amount or only to the trade debit. If a charge is annual or monthly rather than per trade, show it separately instead of pretending it is a precise one-order cost.
How currency conversion works
Buying the Tokyo share
The ordinary share is priced and settled in JPY. A euro- or sterling-based investor therefore has two distinct exposures: the Nintendo share price in yen and the JPY value relative to the investor’s home currency. Even if the yen share price is unchanged, a move in the exchange rate can change the position’s home-currency value.
Your broker may convert automatically when the order executes, or it may let you convert cash manually and hold a JPY balance. Automatic conversion is convenient but can hide the applied spread until the confirmation. Manual conversion can make the rate and fee visible, but it may create unused yen if the order is only partly filled or expires. Check how the broker reverses or retains unused currency.
Buying NTDOY
NTDOY trades in USD, so a non-USD investor still has currency exposure. Converting euros or pounds to dollars does not remove foreign-exchange risk; it changes the currency involved. The ADR also has a four-receipts-to-one-ordinary-share ratio, so compare prices only after accounting for that ratio and the broker’s displayed quantity.

Questions to ask about the rate
- Is conversion performed at order submission, execution, settlement or another time?
- Is there a fixed conversion fee in addition to the exchange-rate markup?
- Can you hold JPY or USD, and are balances converted back automatically?
- Does the broker show the exact rate and converted amount on the confirmation?
- Are weekend or overnight conversions priced differently because the underlying currency market is closed or less liquid?
The exact cost cannot be stated without your broker, account, residence, order value and conversion method. Capture a live quote immediately before placing the order if the FX component is material to your decision.
Which order type should you use?
Official exchange material establishes TSE sessions and trading rules, but it does not establish that every European broker offers the same order types for this security. Treat the following as general concepts and rely on the live ticket for the actual choices.
Market order
A market order instructs the broker to seek execution at the best available prices under the venue’s rules. The execution price is not fixed when you click submit. In a security with a wider spread or thinner displayed liquidity, the filled price can differ from the quote you saw. A market order can also be filled in parts if the available quantity is insufficient at one price.
Limit order
A limit order specifies the highest price you will pay for a purchase. It can protect you from paying above that level, but it may remain unfilled if the market never reaches the limit. The broker may offer different durations, such as session-only or another stated validity; read the exact labels because an order that expires is not the same as one that remains open.

Ticket checks before submission
- Confirm whether the price is quoted in JPY for the Tokyo share or USD for NTDOY.
- Check the minimum quantity and trading unit; TSE rules describe units, but the exact requirement for your ticket must be verified with the broker.
- Read the price increment or tick-size information so a limit price is valid.
- Choose a duration that the ticket explicitly supports.
- Check whether the broker permits pre-session orders and how it queues them for the next session.
- Verify that the route is TSE or the intended OTC venue, not an unintended substitute instrument.
- Review whether the order can be partially filled and how commission is charged on multiple executions.
Tokyo trading hours and European time zones
JPX lists two TSE sessions: 9:00–11:30 and 12:30–15:30 Japan time. The midday break means there is no continuous session between those periods. Convert those times to your own city for the specific date, taking account of European daylight-saving changes; the time difference is not constant throughout the year.
Your broker can impose an earlier cut-off for accepting, amending or cancelling an order. It may also queue an order submitted while the market is closed rather than send it immediately. The ticket’s status and validity fields are more authoritative for your account than a generic exchange-hours page.
Comparing the two routes without being misled
| Comparison point | Tokyo ordinary share | NTDOY ADR |
|---|---|---|
| Security type | Common share listed on TSE Prime Market | US OTC depositary receipt |
| Trade currency | JPY | USD |
| Ratio | One ordinary share is the reference security | Four depositary receipts represent one ordinary share, according to Citi |
| Venue hours | JPX sessions 9:00–11:30 and 12:30–15:30 Japan time | US OTC hours and broker handling; the reviewed material does not establish one universal schedule for every broker |
| Residence eligibility | Depends on broker access to Japan | Depends on broker permission for this OTC ADR and your residence |
| Liquidity and spread | Must be checked in the live TSE quote and ticket | Must be checked in the live OTC quote and ticket; do not infer it from the Tokyo listing |
| Order types and validity | Broker-specific; confirm in the ticket | Broker-specific; confirm in the ticket |
| Conversion need for a euro-based investor | Usually EUR-to-JPY or another home-currency-to-JPY conversion | Usually EUR-to-USD or another home-currency-to-USD conversion |
| Other charges | Commission, minimum, local charges, custody and dividend fees may apply | Commission, minimum, OTC, custody, dividend and possible depositary fees may apply |
A lower headline commission on one route does not prove a lower total cost. Compare the same notional value, include the currency spread, and inspect the final cash estimate before deciding.
Common failure modes and fixes
The instrument cannot be traded
If the search result is visible but the buy button is disabled, the broker may not support that venue for your residence or account. Confirm eligibility with the broker rather than substituting an unrequested derivative. If the Tokyo share is unavailable, check separately whether NTDOY is permitted; do not assume the alternative is available.

Best Value
The conversion amount is larger than expected
Open the confirmation and separate the share debit, commission, local charges, explicit FX fee and exchange-rate spread. If the broker converted automatically, compare the applied rate with the rate displayed before submission. Ask support which timestamp and rate source were used.
The order remains pending or expires
Check whether the market was closed, whether your limit was reached, whether the order was only valid for one session, and whether the broker queued it for the next session. A pending order is not an execution; do not count it as a holding until the fill appears.
The fill is partial
Review the remaining quantity and the commission rule for multiple executions. Decide whether to leave the balance active, amend it or cancel it, using only the controls and durations the ticket provides.
Information the available evidence does not establish
No single published statistic establishes the all-in fee paid by European retail investors for Nintendo trades. The result depends on residence, broker legal entity, account, order size, route, conversion method and date. The available material also does not identify one broker that serves every European country, one optimal execution time, or one set of order types accepted by every broker.
Those limits are practical rather than reasons to guess. Use the broker’s current tariff and order ticket, save the estimates, and compare like with like. Nintendo’s investor-relations materials state that their information is not an invitation to invest and that investment decisions are the reader’s responsibility. This guide explains access, costs, currency and execution mechanics; it is not a recommendation to buy Nintendo shares or NTDOY.
