You can buy Microsoft stock through a brokerage account by searching for MSFT and placing an order, or investigate Microsoft’s direct stock purchase plan administered by Computershare. Microsoft common shares trade on The Nasdaq Stock Market. Buying a share gives you an ownership interest in the company, but its price can fall as well as rise, and you can lose money.
What you buy when you buy MSFT
Microsoft’s common shares trade on The Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol MSFT, according to Microsoft’s investor FAQ. When entering an order, check that the result identifies Microsoft Corporation; a similar name or a fund holding Microsoft shares is not the same security.

A share represents an ownership interest in Microsoft. Its market value changes, and shareholders can lose money if the price falls. If a company goes bankrupt and liquidates, common shareholders are last in line for any proceeds, after creditors and other claims, as the SEC’s stock guidance explains.

Buy individual MSFT shares
A brokerage purchase is the usual route for an investor who wants to own Microsoft shares directly. You choose a broker, open and fund an account, then place an order for MSFT. Some brokers support buying a fraction of a share; availability and transaction mechanics differ by firm.

Use Microsoft’s direct stock purchase plan
Microsoft identifies Computershare as the administrator of its direct stock purchase plan and dividend reinvestment plan on its investor stock information page. Contact Computershare and review the current plan documents before enrolling. Do not assume the plan has no fees or minimums, accepts every investor, or lets you choose the exact execution time or price.
Buy a stock fund for indirect exposure
A stock fund may hold Microsoft alongside other securities, depending on its investment objective and policies. Buying fund shares gives you exposure through the fund; it does not make you the direct owner of an MSFT share. Review the fund’s holdings and objective if you choose this route.

How to buy MSFT through a brokerage account
- Decide what you want to own. Choose individual Microsoft shares if direct ownership is your goal. If you want broader exposure, compare funds by their objectives and holdings instead.
- Compare brokerage accounts. Check commissions and other fees, whether MSFT is eligible for fractional-share purchases, which order types are available, and how orders are executed. Also confirm whether you are opening a cash or margin account. These terms and features vary by broker; the SEC stock information and its investor guidance describe issues to consider.
- Open and fund the account. Follow the broker’s process and check the account settings before adding money. A margin account involves borrowing from the broker and paying interest; borrowing can increase losses as well as buying power. Read the broker’s explanation of cash and margin accounts before accepting an account type.
- Find the correct security. Search for MSFT and verify the issuer is Microsoft Corporation and the listing is Nasdaq. The share price changes, so check the live quote in your brokerage app before ordering rather than relying on an old price.
- Choose an order type and amount. Review what the broker’s order type does and the conditions under which it may execute. If you are buying a fraction, confirm the broker supports fractional MSFT purchases and understand any restrictions on order types or execution.
- Review and submit. Confirm the security, amount, order details, estimated cost, and account type before submitting. After execution, retain the confirmation and transaction records.
What to check before using a direct plan
A direct stock plan can differ from a brokerage order in how and when purchases are made. SEC investor guidance says direct plans may charge fees or require minimums, and purchases may occur at scheduled intervals using an average market price rather than a price selected by the investor. Those are general cautions, not confirmed current terms for Microsoft’s plan. Check the latest Computershare plan materials for fees, minimum investment, eligibility, timing, sale procedures, and any dividend reinvestment terms before deciding.
For a brokerage purchase, fractional-share rules also vary. The SEC’s fractional shares bulletin, dated November 9, 2020, notes that firms can differ in eligible securities, order execution, order types, fees, and voting rights for fractions. Ask the specific broker how those rules apply to MSFT.

Taxes and records
Keep order confirmations, account statements, and plan records. Tax treatment depends on your country and circumstances; consult the relevant tax authority or a qualified tax professional for guidance applicable to you. The U.S.-oriented steps above do not establish whether a particular broker or plan is available in your jurisdiction.
