To buy gold safely in the U.S., identify the exact product, compare its full price and resale terms across established dealers, verify the seller and product, and get delivery or storage terms in writing. Gold is not risk-free: its price can fall, and premiums, spreads, fees, insurance, and storage can make it harder to sell at a profit.
Know what you are buying: bullion or a collectible
Bullion coins and bars are priced primarily by their gold content: weight and fineness. A collectible or numismatic coin may also be priced for rarity, age, and condition, so its value is not simply the value of its metal. The CFTC and FINRA warn that “semi-numismatic” has no special meaning and can be used to justify inflated spreads. If your goal is to own gold bullion, ask the seller to identify the item as bullion and explain any charge beyond its metal value. CFTC and FINRA explain pricing and dealer questions.

Understand the price: spot, premium, spread, and fees
The spot price is a baseline for the metal, not the price you will pay for a coin or bar. For a quick comparison, multiply the product’s stated gold weight by the current spot price, then compare that figure with the dealer’s complete quote. Ask the dealer to state the premium and explain how it is calculated. Request the buyback price too: the gap between what the dealer charges you and what it would pay to buy the item back is the spread. The CFTC and FINRA put it plainly: “A dealer will always sell metal above the spot price and buy it back below the spot price.”

Choose coins or bars by comparing the exact products
There is no universal winner between coins and bars. Compare the quote, resale terms, weight, specifications, and holding costs for the particular items available to you.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Total price | What is the complete price for this exact product, including its premium and every fee? |
| Resale | What would this dealer pay to buy this item back now, and how does that compare with its sale price? |
| Weight and divisibility | What is the exact gold weight? Would a smaller unit better fit the amount you may want to transact at once? Smaller units are not necessarily cheaper per ounce or easier to sell. |
| Identity and specifications | Who issued or refined it? What are its stated fineness, gold content, weight, and dimensions? What written guarantee or certification applies? |
| Holding costs | Will you pay for shipping, storage, insurance, or account or custodian services, now or later? |
For one familiar U.S. bullion coin, the United States Mint lists American Eagle gold bullion coins in one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce, and tenth-ounce sizes. These are the coins’ stated gold weights; compare the exact product’s total quote rather than assuming a smaller coin has a lower per-ounce cost. See the Mint’s American Eagle bullion program.

Where to buy gold coins and bars
Start with an established local business or an identifiable online dealer whose address and business history you can check. The U.S. Mint is not a direct-to-consumer bullion shop: it says, “The United States Mint, like other world mints, does not sell its bullion coins directly to the public.” It distributes bullion coins through authorized purchasers and downstream dealers.

The Mint says some listed purchasers may not sell to retail customers. Contact any firm directly to confirm whether it sells the product you want and on what terms. Its bullion consumer-awareness page also recommends checking the seller and product rather than relying on a low-price claim.

Check the dealer and product before paying
- Check the business. Look up its physical address, operating history, independent reviews, and complaints. You can also check complaint resources maintained by your state attorney general. Retail metal dealers are not regulated at the federal level, according to the CFTC and FINRA advisory, so do not assume that a professional-looking website or sales pitch proves a seller is trustworthy.
- Verify claimed credentials. If a salesperson presents themselves as an investment professional or IRA expert, check registration and disciplinary history with the relevant regulator. Treat a credential claim as something to verify, not a substitute for reviewing the transaction.
- Get the product details. Have the quote identify the metal, issuer or refiner, exact gold weight, fineness, dimensions, and any applicable product guarantee or third-party certification. Compare the details with specifications published by the issuer. Mint guidance is specific to the products it covers; its coin features should not be assumed to apply to unrelated bars.
- Get the economics in writing. Request the complete retail price, all fees, and the dealer’s buyback quote before you commit. Compare the spread with quotes from other dealers for the same product.
- Read delivery, return, and storage terms. Confirm shipping arrangements, return and cancellation rules, and whether storage or insurance is included or billed separately. If metal will be stored or described as allocated, establish where it is held and what documents verify your ownership; understand the arrangement rather than treating an account statement alone as proof of its terms.
- Check the item when it arrives. Compare the package and product with the invoice and the issuer’s published specifications. If you still doubt authenticity, consult a qualified independent professional rather than relying on an improvised test.
Spot pressure, leverage, and delivery scams
Walk away from unsolicited pitches, urgent “limited-time” offers, promised or guaranteed returns, and pressure to borrow or use leverage to buy metal. Be wary of pop-up sellers and strangers selling through discussion boards or social media. The CFTC warns that financed or stored-metal arrangements can add risks; clarify who holds the metal, what you own, and what charges or obligations apply.
In July 2025, the Federal Trade Commission warned about a specific government-impersonation scam: an unexpected caller tells someone to buy gold bars and hand them to a courier or another person to “protect” their money. The FTC says, “If someone contacts you unexpectedly and tells you to buy gold bars and hand them to someone (anyone!) to ‘protect your money,’ you’ve spotted a scam.” Stop contact and do not buy or deliver the bars. Read the FTC alert.

The CFTC and FINRA report that over the past decade they charged numerous companies with selling overpriced precious metals to customers, alleging more than $500 million in fraudulent sales. They also say that in some gold or silver IRA fraud cases, victims had one-third to one-half of their savings drained by fraudsters’ markups, fees, and commissions. Those figures describe agency allegations and some fraud cases; they are not a measure of typical costs for ordinary bullion purchases. The agencies’ advisory covers physical-metal risks.

If you are considering gold in a retirement account
A “gold IRA” commonly means a self-directed IRA holding bullion. Eligibility, tax treatment, storage arrangements, and rollover rules depend on the transaction and account. Fees and custodial requirements can add complexity to a purchase that might otherwise seem straightforward. Before changing a retirement account or arranging a rollover, speak with a qualified tax or financial professional about your specific circumstances; this guide is not individualized tax, investment, or retirement-account advice.
