To buy gold jewellery safely, check the hallmark using the official system for the country where you are buying, confirm the seller and sales channel, and get an itemized invoice that identifies the piece. A hallmark is an independent indication of tested metal fineness; the marks and verification route are not universal. The UK and India checks below are separate examples, not one combined legal checklist.
What should I check before buying gold jewellery?
- Identify the country and its hallmark system. Do not assume a mark or verification method used in one country applies in another.
- Read the stated fineness. A number such as 375 describes parts of gold per thousand under the relevant standard; appearance alone cannot establish composition.
- Check the seller and channel. Establish where the trader is based, look for the information required by the local rules, and choose a seller with a clear route for questions or complaints.
- Get a detailed invoice. Make sure it describes the item and its precious-metal content, then keep it with your purchase records.
- Use an official verification or testing route if uncertain. The available route depends on the country; the Indian BIS options are described below.
How do UK gold hallmarks work?
UK guidance describes three compulsory hallmark components: the sponsor’s or maker’s mark, the metal fineness mark, and the Assay Office mark. A date letter may also appear, but it is optional. Fineness is expressed in parts per thousand: for example, 9-carat gold is marked 375, meaning at least 375 parts gold in 1,000 under that standard. See the British Hallmarking Council / GOV.UK practical summary, updated 30 December 2022.

Allow for the UK weight exemption
The same 2022 summary gives a 1 gram exemption for gold: below the applicable minimum weight, hallmarking is not compulsory. Other statutory exceptions may also apply, so the absence of a hallmark on a small piece does not by itself establish that the sale is unlawful. Ask the seller what exception applies if a piece that you expect to be hallmarked has no mark.

Marks can be tiny. UK consumer guidance suggests asking the shop for a magnifying glass; a jeweller’s loupe can also help make a mark visible, but it cannot test the metal or prove that the mark is genuine. In a physical shop, look for the displayed Dealer’s Notice and ask to inspect the hallmark. The UK guidance says retailers must display this notice, and online retail sites must prominently show hallmark explanations. A trade-body membership sign can be a reputation signal, but it is not proof of fineness. The consumer guidance also advises checking where an online seller is based and says, “If you are buying online, hallmarking law still applies.” See UK consumer protection guidance, last updated 18 November 2022 and business compliance guidance, last updated 9 December 2021.

How does India’s BIS hallmark and HUID check work?
India’s BIS describes the HUID-era hallmark as three elements: the BIS logo, purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID. BIS says HUID was introduced on 1 July 2021. This is India’s system, not the UK hallmark check. Before purchase, use the BIS CARE app’s “Verify HUID” feature to check the identifier, as described by BIS’s General Hallmarking FAQs and its Consumer Protection page, last updated 26 November 2025.
What should be on a gold jewellery invoice?
BIS says an authentic bill is necessary for disputes, misuse, or complaint redressal. Its consumer FAQ lists the information the bill should include:

Ask for those details itemized and retain the invoice. See BIS Common Consumer Hallmarking FAQs.
Where can Indian consumers get a piece tested?
BIS says consumers may have jewellery or a sample tested on a chargeable basis at a BIS-recognized Assaying & Hallmarking Centre. The centre can issue an assay report identifying the marked article. BIS also describes a compensation route if hallmarked jewellery is found below its stated purity; whether a particular claim qualifies or how it is calculated depends on the applicable rules and circumstances. Consult BIS for the current process rather than assuming a particular outcome.

How should I compare pieces or sellers?
Compare like with like rather than relying on appearance or a seller’s general assurances. For each option, check the same practical details:
- Stated fineness and the applicable official marks
- Net precious-metal weight, recorded clearly on the invoice
- Whether the invoice identifies the article and relevant charges
- Seller location and a clear route for questions or complaints
- Whether the item is above the jurisdiction’s hallmarking exemption threshold
These checks help you identify what is being sold and what records you will have if a problem arises; they do not establish a universal price or making-charge benchmark.

What to do if something is unclear
- If the hallmark is hard to read, ask the seller to show it clearly; a magnifier only improves visibility.
- If a UK item lacks a mark, ask whether a weight exemption or another statutory exception applies.
- If an Indian HUID cannot be verified or invoice details are missing, ask the seller to resolve the issue before completing the purchase.
- If you remain uncertain about Indian jewellery purity, contact a BIS-recognized Assaying & Hallmarking Centre about chargeable testing and its report.
