These routes do not give you the same thing: bullion puts metal in your possession, while exchange-traded products, stocks, and futures provide different forms of financial exposure. Compare what you will own, the full cost of entering and exiting, and the risks before choosing. This guide focuses on US investor guidance; tax rules, eligibility, and purchase practices vary by country.
Compare the main ways to buy gold
| Route | What you own or have exposure to | Costs and risks to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Physical bullion coins or bars | Gold bullion that you take delivery of or arrange to store. | Premium over spot, dealer buyback price, delivery, storage, insurance, authentication, and resale terms. |
| Gold ETF or other exchange-traded product | Shares or notes in a product whose strategy may hold bullion, use futures, or use other exposure. The structure and holdings depend on the specific product. | Fund expenses, brokerage and trading costs, strategy and holdings, and market price relative to net asset value (NAV). Not every product offers redemption for metal. |
| Mining-company shares | Ownership in a business involved in mining, rather than direct ownership of gold. | Company and market risks as well as any effect from gold prices. Share performance is not the same as bullion performance. |
| Gold futures | Contractual exposure to gold prices, subject to the contract terms. | Leverage, margin exposure, contract terms, and the possibility of losses greater than the amount initially invested. |
| Gold IRA | A retirement-account arrangement promoted as a way to hold precious metals; the account and asset-holding details depend on the arrangement. | Setup and ongoing fees, commissions, custody, product markups, eligibility, and exit or buyback terms. |
The CFTC and FINRA caution that precious-metals securities can include mining shares and exchange-traded products with different exposure methods. A product’s name alone does not tell you whether it holds physical gold, uses derivatives, or gives you a right to redeem metal. Read its official documents before investing.

Buying physical gold coins or bars
Understand the price you pay—and the price you may get back
Bullion is investment-grade metal with a stated weight and purity. Its price from a dealer generally includes a premium above the spot price. If you sell, the dealer may offer less than spot. The CFTC and FINRA put the two-sided spread plainly: “A dealer will always sell metal above the spot price and buy it back below the spot price.” Treat this as a warning to compare the full transaction, not as a guarantee of the price any particular dealer will quote.

Ask for the total price, including fees and delivery, and request the dealer’s current buyback terms for the same item. A low advertised premium is not enough to judge a purchase if shipping, payment, storage, or resale conditions change the economics.

Compare bullion on practical details
- Weight and purity: Check the stated amount of gold and the product’s purity, then compare like with like.
- Denomination: Consider whether the size of the coin or bar suits your budget and how you may want to sell it later.
- Delivery and payment: Confirm delivery method, timing, payment rules, and any related charges before placing an order.
- Storage and insurance: Decide where the gold will be kept and what protection, if any, is included or must be arranged separately.
- Authentication and resale: Ask how the product is authenticated and what documentation or condition requirements apply when selling it back.
- Seller compensation: Ask how the seller makes money, including commissions or markups, and compare more than one offer.
Do not confuse bullion with collectible coins
Collectible or numismatic coins can carry premiums based on claimed rarity or future collector demand. Those premiums may not be recoverable when you resell, and collectible products may be less liquid than bullion. The CFTC and FINRA say “semi-numismatic” has no special meaning in their investor bulletin. Be cautious if a seller uses that label or collector-value claims to justify a high markup without clearly explaining the product and resale market.
Buying a gold ETF or another exchange-traded product
Exchange-traded products can be bought and sold through a brokerage account, but they are not all structured alike. Some hold physical bullion; others use futures or other derivatives. An ETF share is not automatically a claim you can exchange for a coin or bar.

For ETFs within the scope of its bulletin—those registered as open-end investment companies or unit investment trusts under the Investment Company Act of 1940—the SEC notes that retail investors trade shares on exchanges at market prices. Those prices can be above or below NAV. That guidance does not cover every commodity exchange-traded product or exchange-traded note, so check the product’s own legal structure and official documents.
What to check in the fund documents
- Strategy and holdings: Find out whether the product holds bullion, trades futures, or uses another method to seek exposure.
- Fees and trading costs: Review ongoing fund expenses alongside any brokerage or trading charges that apply to you.
- Price versus NAV: Review historical premium and discount information where available, and understand that exchange trading prices can differ from NAV.
- Structure and redemption: Confirm what the product legally is and whether investors can redeem shares for metal; do not assume they can.
- Liquidity and trading: Consider how easily shares can be bought and sold, and use the product’s official information to understand its trading features.
Investor.gov notes that investors often use brokerage accounts to trade exchange-listed ETF shares and that costs and market prices vary by fund. A familiar exchange listing does not remove the need to check a product’s expenses and structure.

Mining shares and futures are different from bullion
Mining-company shares
A mining share represents ownership in a company, not direct possession of gold. Its value can respond to gold prices, but also to company operations and broader market factors. Buying a miner is therefore a business investment with gold-related exposure, not a substitute for holding a coin or bar.
Futures contracts
Futures provide contractual price exposure and can involve leverage. Leverage can magnify gains and losses, and margin exposure means losses may exceed the amount initially invested. Before trading, understand the contract terms, required margin, and how changing prices affect your position. Futures are not a simple way to take physical delivery unless the specific contract and your arrangements support that outcome.

Use extra care with gold IRA sales pitches
A “gold IRA” pitch may involve a self-directed retirement account, precious-metal products, and separate parties involved in selling, custody, or administration. The CFTC and FINRA warn consumers about high fees and commissions, inflated collectible-coin prices, and claims that metals are safe. Do not treat a retirement-account label as proof that a product is low-cost, suitable, or free of risk.
Before proceeding, get clear written answers to these questions:
- Who holds the assets, and what role does each company or salesperson play?
- What are all setup, transaction, custody, storage, and ongoing account costs?
- How does the seller or salesperson earn money, including commissions and markups?
- What are the exit, liquidation, and buyback terms?
- Is the salesperson registered when registration applies, and what official documents describe the account and investments?
A practical checklist before you buy
- Choose the exposure you want. Decide whether you want possession of bullion, exchange-traded exposure, ownership in a mining business, or a futures contract.
- Identify the exact product. For bullion, verify weight and purity. For a traded product, read its prospectus or other official documents to identify its structure, strategy, and holdings.
- Calculate entry and exit costs. For physical metal, compare the premium over spot with the seller’s buyback offer and account for delivery and storage. For traded products, include fund expenses and applicable brokerage or trading costs.
- Check the risks specific to the route. Consider storage and resale for bullion; market-price deviations and fund structure for exchange-traded products; company risks for miners; and leverage and margin for futures.
- Review the seller or intermediary. Ask how they are compensated and check registration where applicable. Be wary of pressure, unsupported claims of safety, and promises about collector value.
- Check local rules and tax treatment. Requirements and taxes depend on jurisdiction and may also depend on the product and account. Consult current local guidance and the relevant official product or account documents.
What gold exposure can—and cannot—do
Gold is not a guaranteed safe investment. Each route has distinct costs and risks, and an investment linked to gold is not necessarily backed by metal you can possess or redeem. Make the decision by comparing the actual product, total costs, and exit conditions—not by relying on a general claim that gold is safe or that a particular coin, fund, share, or contract must track bullion closely.
This is general consumer information, not individualized investment or tax advice. Product availability, dealer practices, prices, and tax treatment can change and vary by jurisdiction.
