How to Buy Gold Bullion Safely: Premiums, Dealers, and Storage

Buy gold bullion only after comparing the delivered price and the dealer’s buy-back quote for the same fine-gold weight, verifying the seller, and deciding how you will take delivery or store the metal. The purchase price includes more than spot, and premiums, resale costs, and fees can leave you at a loss even if the spot price rises. Gold can lose value; it is not a guaranteed safe investment.

What you are buying when you buy bullion

Gold bullion is physical gold bought primarily for its metal content, usually as a bar or coin. It is different from a collectible coin, whose price may depend on rarity, condition, or collector demand as well as its gold content. A collectible markup is not the same thing as a bullion premium, and a collector market can be less straightforward to resell into.

For a bullion purchase, the key comparison is the item’s fine-gold weight: the amount of actual gold in it, rather than its total weight including any alloy. Check the exact weight and purity stated for the product. Do not assume that two items with the same gross weight contain the same amount of gold.

Physical ownership also means making arrangements for delivery, storage, and insurance. Those obligations—and the cost of getting back out of the investment—are part of the purchase decision, not details to leave until later.

Understand spot, premium, and the cost of getting out

Spot is a reference market price, commonly quoted per troy ounce. A dealer’s retail price is generally the comparable spot value of the product’s fine gold plus a premium. The premium can reflect the product and dealer’s costs; it is not a guaranteed indicator of quality or future resale value.

The amount you would receive on resale matters just as much as the amount you pay. A dealer’s spread is the difference between its selling price and the price it offers to buy the same metal back. Commissions, shipping, storage, insurance, withdrawal, or other charges can further affect the result. As the CFTC explains, “Premiums, fees, and commissions can also drain the profit from your purchase.”

Compare each quote on the same basis

  1. Record a current spot quote. Note the source, time, and unit; a per-troy-ounce quote is not directly comparable to the price of a differently sized item.
  2. Convert to the product’s fine-gold amount. Use the stated fine-gold weight and purity. Compare the resulting spot value for that amount of gold, not the gross weight or the product’s face value.
  3. Calculate the delivered purchase cost. Include the quoted price and all charges that apply to your purchase, such as shipping, insurance, taxes where applicable, and payment-related fees.
  4. Ask for the buy-back quote. Ask what the seller would pay for that exact item if you sold it back immediately, and whether conditions, commissions, or other fees apply.
  5. Include custody costs if applicable. Add storage, insurance, administration, and eventual withdrawal or delivery charges to the comparison.

A useful comparison record looks like this:

Item to compare What to write down
Product Exact bar or coin, fine-gold weight, stated purity, and any identifying documentation.
Retail cost Price plus shipping, insurance, taxes where applicable, and payment charges.
Premium Delivered retail cost minus the comparable spot value for the item’s fine-gold amount.
Buy-back Dealer’s quote for the same item, plus any resale conditions or charges.
Ongoing cost Storage, insurance, custody, administration, and withdrawal costs, if relevant.

For example, suppose a hypothetical one-ounce item has a delivered purchase cost of $2,100 and the dealer says it would immediately buy the item back for $1,980. The $120 difference is an immediate retail-to-buy-back gap before any additional costs or change in spot price. These figures are only an illustration of the calculation, not a current gold quote or a typical premium. To estimate what price movement you would need to break even, account for the buy-back terms and every fee—not simply whether spot rises above your purchase-day quote.

Do not compare a small coin’s dollar premium with a large bar’s without converting both to the cost per the same amount of fine gold. There is no universal fair premium established here: prices and spreads vary by seller and product and can change quickly. The CFTC and FINRA advise comparing premiums and considering selling costs, fees, and commissions before buying.

Choose a bar or coin by its trade-offs

Bars and coins both provide physical gold exposure, but they can differ in size, premium, resale market, and the practicalities of storage and delivery. Smaller units can cost more per unit of gold. A lower quoted price for a large bar is not automatically the better fit if you may need to sell only part of your holding or cannot conveniently store and take delivery of it.

Format What the source describes What to check before buying
Gold bars The World Gold Council lists denominations from 1 to 1,000 grams and 1, 10, 100, and 400 troy ounces. Stated fineness commonly ranges from 99.5% to 99.99%. Institutional London Good Delivery bars are approximately 400 troy ounces. Exact fine-gold weight and fineness; premium for that size; seller’s buy-back terms; shipping, insurance, and a realistic custody plan.
Bullion coins The World Gold Council describes bullion coins as typically government-issued, with a face value and purity generally between 91.67% (22 carat) and 99.99% (24 carat). Fine-gold content rather than face value alone; premium per unit of gold; how the seller will value the coin at resale; delivery and storage requirements.

Those ranges describe common formats, not a guarantee about any particular item. Verify the product’s own stated weight and purity before paying. If the seller emphasizes rarity, special design, or collectible value, ask how much of the quoted price is attributable to the metal and how the item would be bought back. Do not treat a collector markup as a standard bullion premium or assume it will be recovered at resale.

Vet the dealer before sending money

Retail coin dealers generally are not federally regulated, so do not treat a professional-looking website, a sales pitch, or a claim of government affiliation as proof of legitimacy. The CFTC and FINRA recommend starting with established local businesses and checking complaints through local consumer organizations, state attorneys general, or securities regulators.

Run basic checks on the business and salesperson

  • For an online seller, verify its physical address and how long it has been operating. Research the firm’s owners and the people selling to you.
  • Look for complaints and relevant disciplinary history through the appropriate consumer or state agencies. A complaint is a reason to investigate rather than, by itself, proof of a particular allegation.
  • Ask how the salesperson is compensated and whether compensation is built into the spread or otherwise affects the quote.
  • Ask the seller to explain precisely what you will own, where it will be, and how you can take delivery or sell it.
  • Get the agreed retail price and every charge in writing before transferring money. Missing or unclear fees are a warning sign.

Walk away from pressure and implausible promises

Be wary of unsolicited calls or messages, demands to act immediately, guaranteed or unusually large returns, claims that there is little risk, and financing pitches that obscure what metal is actually being purchased. A seller should be able to give you time to read the terms and compare a competing quote without threatening that the opportunity will disappear.

Vague assurances that metal is stored at a bank or an overseas facility are not enough. The CFTC warns that fraud cases have included customers being charged storage fees for bullion that did not exist, and customer funds being diverted into leveraged trading instead of metal purchases. Require documentation and independently check any claimed storage arrangement.

The FTC’s July 2025 consumer alert states: “In fact, no one from the government will ever tell you to buy and deliver gold bars, move your money, or give cash to anyone.” A person claiming to be a government agent who directs you to buy or deliver gold is not giving you a legitimate government instruction.

Get the complete deal in writing

Before paying, make sure the written order or agreement states what is being sold, what you will pay, and what happens after payment. A verbal quote can change or leave out charges that matter to your final cost.

  • The dealer’s buy-back price or pricing method, and any conditions, fees, or procedures that apply when selling.
  • How and when you will receive confirmation of the purchase and evidence of ownership.

If a charge is not explained, ask for the amount and how often it recurs. If the seller will not put the agreed price or material fees in writing, do not assume the missing terms will work in your favor.

Decide how you will take delivery and store the gold

The World Gold Council notes that buyers of physical bars or coins must arrange delivery, storage, and insurance. Neither home storage nor professional custody is universally best; the choice depends on your access, security, cost, and documentation needs.

Arrangement Main practical question Verify before committing
Take possession and store at home Can you secure the metal and accept responsibility for its safekeeping? Whether your homeowner’s policy covers bullion, the coverage limits and conditions, and whether you need separate insurance. Coverage may not apply automatically.
Use a professional storage provider Can you verify what is held for you and access it when needed? Legal ownership; whether metal is allocated to you or pooled; the specific vault location; insurance; audit or statement arrangements; ongoing fees; and the physical-withdrawal process and cost.

For either arrangement, keep purchase records and ownership documents securely. If a dealer says the metal is stored somewhere else, verify the location and terms independently rather than relying solely on the dealer’s assurance. A custody statement should make clear what it represents and how you would obtain the physical metal.

Storage costs can change the economics of a purchase held for years. Compare all recurring charges and the cost of withdrawing or arranging delivery, not just the initial storage quote. The available guidance identifies these as important checks but does not establish that one storage provider or arrangement is best for every household.

Use a step-by-step purchase process

  1. Set the purpose and amount. Decide why you want physical bullion and how much you can afford to expose to gold-price changes. Avoid treating a seller’s return promise as a substitute for your own assessment of risk.
  2. Select a product category. Choose a standard bar or bullion coin based on fine-gold content, size, premium, resale options, and whether you can store and take delivery of it. Separate any collectible value from the metal value.
  3. Get comparable written quotes. Ask more than one seller for the same product or a clearly comparable fine-gold amount. Record the spot quote’s time and unit, the delivered total, and the immediate buy-back quote.
  4. Check the seller. Verify the business address and history, research owners and salespeople, and check relevant complaint or disciplinary records. Ask how the salesperson is paid.
  5. Choose delivery or custody. Before ordering, settle where the bullion will be, how it is insured, what ongoing costs apply, and how you can access or withdraw it.
  6. Review the contract and charges. Confirm the product, retail price, commissions, shipping, insurance, taxes where applicable, storage, and any future fees in writing. Resolve discrepancies before sending payment.
  7. Pay through the documented arrangement. Keep the order, payment record, and written communications. Do not redirect funds or metal because of an unsolicited call or message; independently verify any purported change with the business using contact details you already confirmed.
  8. Confirm what happened. If delivered, check that the received item and accompanying documentation match the order. If stored, obtain written confirmation of the holding, ownership terms, location, and access procedure.

Plan the resale before you buy

A purchase is not complete as a decision until you know how you could sell. Ask whether the original dealer will buy back the exact product, how its offer is calculated, whether it requires original packaging or documents, and what charges or timing apply. Compare that offer with another seller’s terms where possible; a stated buy-back policy is not necessarily the best available resale price.

Keep the invoice, product description, payment record, ownership or custody statements, and any documents supplied with the bullion. These records help you establish what you bought and reconcile it with a later sale or withdrawal. The dealer’s written process should also say how to arrange the transaction and what costs may be deducted.

Because both the metal price and dealer terms can change, avoid using a purchase-day premium as a promise about future value. A higher future spot quote does not alone show that you made a profit: compare what you could actually receive after the spread and all applicable costs with the full amount you paid.

Special case: retirement accounts and tax questions

Buying bullion personally and using a retirement account are not interchangeable transactions. The CFTC/FINRA guidance discusses retirement accounts and potential tax consequences; a rollover can raise account-specific rules and tax questions. If you are considering an IRA rollover or need to understand how a purchase or sale affects your taxes, consult an appropriately qualified financial or tax professional before moving funds. This guide is general U.S.-oriented consumer and investor information, not individualized financial or tax advice.
