First check that the broker and account can trade the security. An order may fill at a different price than the quote—or remain unfilled—so check its status afterward.
1. Choose a brokerage firm and check its terms
A brokerage firm is the intermediary that accepts and routes your stock order. Before opening an account, check that the firm is registered and review its background using the SEC’s Investor.gov resources. Check the firm, and the individual professional when relevant. Then confirm that the firm allows you to trade GME and read its current account agreement, fees, order rules, and eligibility requirements.

2. Open and fund the account you intend to use
During the application, check whether you are opening a cash or margin account. In a cash account, you pay the full purchase amount. A margin account lets you borrow against eligible securities; borrowing can incur interest and magnify losses. Some applications may default to margin, so verify the account type and terms before accepting them. See the SEC’s brokerage account guidance for general information. The funding method and timing depend on the firm.

3. Search for the correct GameStop security
Enter GME in the broker’s security search, then verify the result identifies GameStop Corp. common stock, listed on the New York Stock Exchange. GameStop confirmed its NYSE ticker in a July 7, 2026 release. Confirm the issuer and security details rather than relying on a similar company name or symbol.
4. Choose an amount and order type
Your broker may offer whole shares, fractional shares, or both. Fractional-share access depends on the broker and the security; minimums, eligible order types, trading hours, and execution rules can also differ. Ask the broker whether it supports fractional GME orders and what limits apply. The SEC explains the general mechanics in Fractional Share Investing.
Market order
A market order generally prioritizes execution at the best available price when the order reaches the market. It does not guarantee the displayed quote or last-traded price: prices can change before execution. This can matter especially when trading activity or prices are moving quickly.

Buy limit order
A buy limit order sets the maximum price you are willing to pay per share. It may execute at that price or lower, but it will not necessarily execute at all if the market does not reach the limit while the order is active. The SEC defines a limit order as an order to buy or sell a stock at a specific price or better in its order-types bulletin. Available order types and time-in-force choices vary by broker; FINRA also outlines common order types.
| Order type | Price control | Execution trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Market | No fixed maximum purchase price; the execution price may differ from the quote. | Generally prioritizes execution at the best available price, but does not guarantee a fill. |
| Buy limit | Sets the highest price you will pay per share. | May not fill if the market does not reach the limit while the order is active. |
These are general descriptions; the broker determines which instructions it accepts and how it handles them.
5. Review the order, submit it, and check what happened
- In the broker’s trading interface, select the verified GME listing and enter the number of shares or dollar amount the firm permits.
- Choose an available order type. If using a limit order, enter the maximum price per share and check any time-in-force setting.
- Review the order preview: issuer and ticker, quantity or amount, order type, limit price if applicable, estimated total, and any applicable charges.
- Submit only if the details match your intention. Then check the order-status screen to see whether it filled, partially filled, or remains open.
- If you cancel or replace an open order, verify that the cancellation took effect before submitting another order. Otherwise, the original order could still execute.
Submitting an order does not itself confirm a purchase. As the SEC explains in Executing an Order, online brokerage customers do not have a direct connection to securities markets. Routing and execution take time, and the quote can change in the meantime. Follow the broker’s status and confirmation rather than assuming the order filled.

After buying: shareholder voting information
If you later need to vote shares, the method depends on your broker. GameStop’s 2026 annual-meeting page provides broker-specific voting instructions; it is not a guide to choosing a broker or placing a purchase.
