How to Buy Games on the Japanese Nintendo eShop From Outside Japan

You can access the Japanese Nintendo eShop from outside Japan by using a Nintendo Account set to Japan and linked to a Switch user. The practical hurdle is payment: Nintendo lists several ways to add funds, but its official guidance does not confirm whether a particular foreign credit card or PayPal account will work. Japan-region prepaid value is a documented option; confirm the code’s region and the seller’s terms before buying.

What you need before you start

Nintendo says the country/region on your Nintendo Account determines which eShop opens on your Switch. Nintendo Japan’s eShop instructions specify an internet-connected Switch and a Nintendo Account set to Japan and linked to a Switch user. See Nintendo’s explanation of eShop country settings and the Nintendo Japan eShop guide.

Before changing an existing account’s country/region, check for complications: Nintendo says an outstanding balance, an active automatic renewal, or an unfulfilled preorder can block a change. Balances do not transfer between regions. The relevant account-change instructions are in Nintendo’s country/region support article.

How to buy a game

  1. Check the account’s current country/region. Sign in to your Nintendo Account and review its country/region setting before opening the eShop. If you plan to change it, first resolve any balance, renewal, or preorder blocker and consider that funds will not carry over.
  2. Use the Japan-region account on your Switch. Link the Nintendo Account set to Japan to a Switch user, connect the console to the internet, and open Nintendo eShop with that user. Nintendo Japan’s requirements are listed in its eShop guide.
  3. Choose a way to fund the account. Nintendo Japan lists credit cards, prepaid cards or numbers, and PayPal among the methods for adding eShop balance. That list does not establish that a foreign-issued card or a foreign PayPal account will be accepted. Nintendo’s general payment guidance says payment methods should match the eShop region; its payment-region troubleshooting page explains the region-matching issue.
  4. For prepaid value, check the code before purchasing. Nintendo documents prepaid cards and numbers as ways to add funds. Its purchase guidance says Japan-market prepaid or download codes may require the Nintendo Account country/region to be Japan. Confirm that the code is specifically for Japan and that the retailer’s terms allow a purchase from your location. Nintendo’s guidance is available on its pages about prepaid cards and digital purchases.
  5. Check the exact game listing, then complete checkout. Review the Japanese eShop listing and the publisher’s information for the game’s price, language options, and any downloadable content you plan to use. These details are title-specific; the general account and payment instructions do not establish them.

Which payment option should you try?

Funding method What Nintendo’s guidance establishes What to verify
Credit card Nintendo Japan lists credit cards as a payment category for adding eShop balance. Its public guidance cited here does not specify whether a particular foreign-issued card is eligible. Check whether the card is accepted for the Japan-region store; do not assume it will work based only on the general category. Nintendo’s credit-card support page is here.
PayPal Nintendo Japan lists PayPal among the payment categories. The cited guidance does not settle acceptance of an account registered outside Japan. Verify eligibility for your account and the Japan-region store before relying on it. Nintendo’s region-matching guidance still applies.
Japan-region prepaid value Nintendo documents prepaid cards or numbers as a way to add funds; Japan-market codes may require a Nintendo Account set to Japan. Confirm that the code is for Japan, that it is valid for the intended account, and that the seller serves your location and states clear redemption terms.

Can you use a foreign credit card or redeem a Japanese eShop card?

The official pages cited here do not establish a blanket yes or no for foreign-issued credit cards or foreign PayPal accounts on the Japanese store. Nintendo’s guidance is that payment methods should match the eShop region, so an overseas buyer should treat direct payment acceptance as unconfirmed rather than guaranteed.

#1 Best Overall

A Japanese prepaid card or code is a documented funding route, but the code’s country matters: Japan-market codes may require the account country/region to be Japan. Check the code’s region and seller terms before paying. The cited Nintendo pages do not verify current third-party stock, seller authorization, or whether a specific retailer will sell to your country.

Check the game’s language and DLC separately

A Japanese eShop listing does not by itself establish which languages a game supports or whether its downloadable content will work with a copy obtained in another region. Consult the listing and the publisher’s details for the exact title before buying, especially if you need a particular language or already own related DLC.
