You can buy a fraction of an expensive stock through a brokerage firm that supports fractional-share trading. Open and fund an eligible account, confirm that the specific stock is supported, choose either a dollar amount or a fractional quantity, review the broker’s order rules and fees, then submit and verify the fill. Availability, execution, dividends, voting, selling and transfers all depend on the broker’s program and your jurisdiction.
What a fractional share is
A fractional share is ownership of less than one whole share. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) defines it as “when you own less than one full share of a stock or other security.”

For example, the SEC’s 2020 investor bulletin illustrates a stock priced at $1,000 per share. Investing $100 would represent 0.1 share. That is an educational example, not a current quote or a promised execution price. Your actual quantity depends on the amount invested, the execution price and the broker’s rules.
The fraction gives you economic exposure to that portion of the position, but it does not make the stock safer. If the stock falls, the value of your fraction generally falls proportionally; if it rises, your gain is also proportional. Fractional ownership removes the need to pay for a whole share, not the possibility of losing money.

Check these conditions before placing an order
Your country and account type
The SEC and FINRA materials are written for U.S. investors. A firm may restrict fractional trading by country, state, account registration or account type. Confirm that the feature is available where you live and in the exact account you intend to use. Do not assume that a broker offering fractional shares in one jurisdiction offers them in another.
The stock or ETF must be eligible
Fractional trading is not universal. Even a participating firm can limit the feature to a list of stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), or other securities. Search for the exact ticker in the broker’s order screen and read the eligibility note before transferring money. FINRA specifically warns that “the availability of fractional share trading varies by brokerage firm.”
An asset can be available for whole-share trading but unavailable for fractional trading. Eligibility can also differ between stocks and ETFs, so verify each security separately rather than relying on a general platform description.
Funding and risk capacity
Deposit enough settled cash for the intended order and any applicable charge. A fractional order does not remove market risk, company-specific risk or the possibility of a loss. Decide how much of your portfolio you are willing to expose to one high-priced stock before entering the order; a lower entry cost should not be mistaken for diversification.
How to buy a fractional share: the practical sequence
- Choose a participating brokerage firm. Confirm fractional-share availability for your jurisdiction and account type. Review the account agreement, fee schedule and any disclosures describing how fractional positions are handled.
- Fund the account. Transfer cash using the firm’s normal deposit process. Check whether the platform requires settled funds before a fractional order can be submitted.
- Find the exact security. Search by the company name or ticker, open the security’s order ticket and verify that fractional buying is enabled. Read any list of excluded stocks or ETFs.
- Select the order basis. Enter either the dollar amount you want to invest or the fraction of a share you want to purchase, depending on what the platform supports. The ticket should show an estimated quantity or value before submission.
- Review the controls. Check the available order types, minimum order size, trading hours, execution timing, supported app or website, and any commission or transaction charge. Some firms accept fractional orders only during regular market hours or only through a particular platform.
- Submit and verify. Save the order confirmation. After execution, inspect the filled quantity, execution price, fees and remaining cash in the account position. An order can be partially filled or handled differently from a whole-share order, so rely on the final confirmation rather than the estimate shown before submission.
Dollar orders versus share orders
Buying by dollar amount
A dollar order tells the broker how much cash to allocate. The resulting fraction is calculated from the execution price. This approach is useful when you want to invest a fixed amount, but the final quantity can differ from the estimate if the price moves or the order is not filled in full.

Buying by fractional quantity
A share-based order specifies a quantity such as 0.25 or 0.1 share. The cash required depends on the execution price. Confirm the platform’s minimum increment; a firm may accept only certain decimal places or may impose a minimum dollar value.
How execution can differ from whole-share trading
Real-time versus aggregated execution
Some firms execute fractional orders in real time. Others collect customer orders, combine them into one or more larger trades and allocate the results among customers. The SEC says the method can affect the price paid or received. Read the broker’s explanation of its execution process so you know whether your order is routed immediately or handled in an aggregation window.

A broker may support fewer order types for fractions than for whole shares. It may allow only market orders, restrict limit orders, or set different rules for recurring purchases. Trading may be limited to regular market hours, and an order ticket in a mobile app may offer controls that are absent on the website, or vice versa. These are program terms, not universal properties of fractional shares.
Minimums and unfilled cash
Minimum dollar values, minimum fractions and rounding rules vary. If your cash balance is smaller than the required minimum, the order can be rejected. If the order fills for less than the requested amount, the unused cash remains in the account. Check the confirmation for the actual quantity and any residual balance.
How to compare fractional-share programs
Before choosing a firm, use its current account agreement, fee schedule and trading disclosures to answer each question below. The SEC and FINRA identify these as areas in which programs differ; neither source establishes a universal fee, minimum or list of eligible securities.

Dividends, corporate actions and voting
Dividends are generally proportional
When a stock pays a dividend, the amount credited generally reflects the fraction held, subject to the firm’s procedures. The SEC gives this illustration: 0.75 share of a stock paying $10.00 per share would produce $7.50 before any applicable handling or tax treatment. It is an example of proportional calculation, not a prediction of a particular company’s dividend.

Ask whether dividends are paid as cash, automatically reinvested, or handled through another method. The broker’s agreement controls the timing and treatment.
Corporate actions can use special procedures
Splits, mergers, tender offers and other corporate actions may create cash-in-lieu payments, rounded quantities or deadlines that differ from whole-share holdings. Obtain the firm’s explanation before assuming that a fraction will receive the same form of consideration as a whole share.
Voting rights are not automatic
Voting treatment depends on the brokerage program. Some firms may not pass through voting rights for fractional interests; others may provide a special process or aggregate votes. Read the proxy and account disclosures if shareholder voting matters to you.
Selling a fractional position
Use the same security page to enter a sell order, then verify whether the firm supports selling any fraction or only certain quantities. The available order types, minimums, hours and execution method can differ from the purchase process. Confirm the final quantity sold, price, fees and remaining cash.

Liquidity can be more limited for a fractional position, particularly in unusual or illiquid market conditions. A broker may need to aggregate the order or use a program-specific process. The inability to sell immediately at your desired price is a practical risk to investigate before buying.

Fractional positions generally cannot be transferred to another brokerage firm as fractions. If you move an account, the current firm may require the fractional amount to be sold and transfer only eligible whole shares or cash. A forced sale can create a taxable event, and tax consequences depend on your cost basis, holding period, account type and personal circumstances. Ask both firms how they handle residual fractions before initiating an automated transfer.
Transaction charges may apply. The SEC recommends asking the broker specifically about fees, sale procedures and transfer treatment rather than assuming that a “commission-free” whole-share schedule covers every fractional transaction.
What the six-decimal FINRA update means
FINRA’s January 14, 2026 trade-reporting notice says fractional-share transaction quantities will be reported to six decimal places, with the update effective February 23, 2026. This is a reporting requirement for FINRA member firms. It does not mean that every retail investor must enter six-decimal quantities, that every broker accepts six decimals, or that all securities trade in that increment. Your broker’s order ticket and agreement determine the increments available to you.
Common problems and practical fixes
The stock cannot be purchased fractionally
Confirm the ticker and read the eligible-security list. If whole-share buying is available but fractional buying is not, you must either purchase a whole share, choose an eligible security or use a different participating firm that is available in your jurisdiction. Do not infer eligibility from another investor’s platform.
The order is rejected
Check the account type, settled-cash balance, minimum order value, permitted decimal increment, order type and market-hours requirement. Correct the specific condition shown in the rejection message; submitting the same ticket repeatedly will not bypass a program restriction.
The filled quantity is different from the estimate
Compare the pre-trade estimate with the final confirmation. Price movement, aggregation, partial execution, rounding or an order entered by dollar amount can change the resulting fraction. Use the confirmed quantity and cost basis in your records.
You cannot find voting instructions
Review the broker’s proxy-voting and fractional-ownership disclosures. Voting may not be passed through for a fractional interest, or the firm may require a separate procedure. Contact the broker before a voting deadline if the documentation is unclear.

Ask the delivering firm whether it will liquidate the residual, send cash in lieu or leave the position behind. Obtain the expected sale date, fees and tax-document treatment. Keep the confirmation and cost-basis records for your tax files.
Managing the investment risk
- Set a position limit. Decide the maximum dollar exposure to one company before placing the order.
- Use only order controls the broker supports. If a limit order is available, understand that it may not fill; if only a market order is available, recognize that the execution price is not fixed in advance.
- Keep records. Save confirmations showing the fraction, execution price, fees, dividends and any corporate-action adjustment.
- Review transfer implications early. A future move to another firm can require selling the fraction and may have tax consequences.
- Do not treat affordability as a guarantee. Paying for 0.1 share instead of one share lowers the cash needed to start, but the underlying stock can still lose value.
Bottom line
To buy a slice of a high-priced stock, use a brokerage program that serves your jurisdiction and account, verify that the exact security is eligible, choose a dollar amount or fractional quantity, and inspect the order’s minimums, type, hours, execution method and fees. After the fill, confirm how dividends, corporate actions, voting, selling and transfers work. Fractional shares make access more affordable; they do not remove market risk, guarantee execution or ensure that the position can be moved intact to another broker.
