How to Buy Fortescue Shares Through a Broker

To buy Fortescue shares on the ASX, open an account with a broker that supports ASX-listed securities, fund it, then place an order for Fortescue. You choose the quantity and price; the broker submits your order to the exchange. An order only becomes a trade if it matches with another order. ASX says payment is due within two days (T+2) after execution.

1. Choose a broker that can trade ASX shares

Compare brokers based on the market access and service you need. An online broker generally lets you place your own orders without personalized recommendations. A full-service broker or financial adviser may offer recommendations and related services, typically at a higher cost. Neither type is automatically right for every investor.

Check each provider’s current fees, supported markets, account requirements, funding options, service level and shareholding structure. ASX does not recommend brokers, and fees and services vary, so confirm the details directly with the provider before opening an account. See ASX’s guidance on buying shares and its broker information.

If you live outside Australia

ASX says non-Australian residents need an international broker or financial adviser in their country of residence that permits trading in ASX-listed securities. Do not assume a local provider offers access; ask specifically about ASX-listed shares and any associated charges. Some overseas investors may also investigate Fortescue’s depositary receipt program, described below.

2. Open and fund the brokerage account

Complete the broker’s account application and identity checks, then arrange the required funding method. Some providers require a linked cash-management account for transfers. ASX’s general guidance says account setup can take up to a week, though it is usually arranged within 24 hours; that is not a timeline guarantee for an individual broker. Follow the provider’s instructions and wait until funds are available for trading.

3. Find Fortescue and place an order

In the broker’s trading platform, search for Fortescue’s ASX-listed ordinary shares. Check the security name and exchange before submitting an order so you do not confuse the ASX shares with an overseas-listed instrument.

Choose how many shares to buy and specify the price or order type offered by the platform. The broker sends the order to ASX, where orders generally match by price and then time priority. Your order may execute, execute only in part, or remain unfilled; a displayed price does not guarantee a trade at that price. Once an order matches, the broker provides a trade confirmation. ASX explains the order process in its share-buying guidance.

4. Settle the trade and check how your shares are held

ASX states that payment is due within two days (T+2) of execution. Check the broker’s confirmation and account records for the trade and settlement details.

Ask whether the shares will be held under your own CHESS-sponsored HIN or through another arrangement. A HIN is linked to broker-sponsored holdings, and ASX holding statements identify the sponsoring broker. ASIC MoneySmart explains that some providers use an omnibus HIN arrangement; its guidance says investors in such an arrangement are not the legal owner of their shares and have fewer protections, including National Guarantee Fund claim protections. Read the account’s legal terms and clarify how holdings and corporate actions are recorded. See ASIC MoneySmart’s HIN glossary and ASX’s information for investors.

5. Use Fortescue’s registry for shareholder administration

Fortescue names MUFG Corporate Markets as its share registry. Its Investor Centre supports shareholder holding details and communications. The registry is for administering a holding; it does not place market orders, so you still need a broker to buy or sell shares.

Fortescue also offers an optional Dividend Reinvestment Plan (DRP). Registered shareholders with an Australian or New Zealand address are eligible; participation for holders without such an address is at the board’s discretion. Check Fortescue’s current terms before deciding whether to participate. The DRP concerns dividends on an existing holding, not how to buy shares. Fortescue’s shareholder information is at Fortescue’s shareholder information page.

Could an ADR suit an overseas investor?

Fortescue states that it has a Level 1 American Depositary Receipt program trading on OTCQX. One depositary receipt represents two ASX-listed ordinary shares, and Citigroup is the depositary bank. An ADR is distinct from buying ordinary shares directly on the ASX. Ask your broker and the depositary about availability, eligibility and fees before choosing that route; program details may change. Fortescue’s shareholder information describes the program.

Understand the investment risk

Buying Fortescue shares exposes you to investment risk, including the possibility of losing money if the share price falls. Exchange trading and a HIN do not protect you against market losses. ASX says the National Guarantee Fund applies only in specific circumstances and does not compensate for trading losses caused by market events or investment choices based on poor advice. Review current issuer information and consider qualified advice if you need help assessing whether the investment suits your circumstances.

Fortescue’s Investor Centre reports FY26 historical results of 201.3 Mt in iron ore shipments, US$3.5 billion in underlying net profit after tax, US$3.2 billion in free cash flow and a fully franked dividend of A$1.08 per share. These are issuer-reported results for FY26, not forecasts or a reason by themselves to buy. They do not establish a current share price, future dividend or expected return. See Fortescue’s Investor Centre.
