For most investors using a European broker, the first listing to check is China Construction Bank’s Hong Kong H-shares: search for ticker 939 and confirm that the order ticket names the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the intended share class. CCB also has Shanghai-listed A-shares, ticker 601939, but access to those shares is conditional on the security’s current eligibility and the broker’s support for the route. Neither listing is guaranteed to be available to every European client.
Which China Construction Bank shares are you buying?
China Construction Bank (CCB) has two distinct listings. The bank says its H-shares trade on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange Main Board as 939, while its A-shares trade on the Shanghai Stock Exchange as 601939. These are not interchangeable search results: check the exchange and share class, not just the company name. CCB’s investor FAQ identifies both listings.

| Listing | Issuer ticker | Board lot stated by CCB | Key access check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong H-shares | 939 | 1,000 shares | Does your account permit this Hong Kong-listed security? |
| Shanghai A-shares | 601939 | 100 shares | Is the security currently eligible for the access route, and does your broker offer that route to your account? |
The lot sizes above are the figures stated in CCB’s FAQ; they do not guarantee that every broker’s order ticket will accept a quantity in that format. Confirm the current order rules in your account before submitting.
How to check whether your European broker can place the trade
A broker may offer Hong Kong trading generally without making every Hong Kong security available to every client. Availability can depend on the account, market permissions and the instrument itself. For example, Interactive Brokers says clients can request Hong Kong stock trading permission, subject to its account process and review; that does not establish access for every European resident or guarantee CCB availability. Check the broker’s own guidance at Hong Kong trading permissions.

- Sign in to the account that will trade. Use that account’s instrument search, since availability shown elsewhere or in a general market list may not apply to your account.
- Search for CCB and ticker 939. Open the instrument details and verify that the issuer is China Construction Bank, the exchange is Hong Kong, and the share class is the H-share listing.
- Check permissions and account eligibility. If the instrument is unavailable, ask the broker whether the issue is market permission, account eligibility or instrument-specific support. Do not assume that a general Hong Kong-market setting resolves all three.
- Review the order preview before confirming. Confirm ticker, exchange, currency, quantity, order type and estimated charges. If the ticket does not clearly identify the intended listing, do not submit until the broker clarifies it.
Buying the Hong Kong H-shares (939)
The Hong Kong listing is the more direct route to investigate: locate 939 in the broker’s platform, establish that the account can trade it, and check the displayed quote and order conditions. CCB states that one Hong Kong H-share board lot is 1,000 shares. The broker’s order controls determine whether your proposed quantity and order type are accepted, so use the ticket rather than assuming that lot-size handling is identical across providers.
Before placing an order, check how the account will fund a Hong Kong-dollar transaction. If your cash balance is in another currency, the broker may convert funds or apply a conversion charge; the amount and method depend on the provider. Also check the broker’s market hours, settlement information and handling of any quantity that is not a full board lot.

Considering the Shanghai A-shares (601939)
CCB’s A-shares are listed in Shanghai under 601939. A European investor should treat this as a conditional route, not assume that seeing the ticker means the trade is available. If a broker offers mainland-market access through Stock Connect, verify that this specific security is currently eligible and that the route is enabled for your account. The available sources do not establish CCB A-share eligibility for every route, broker, residency or date.

CCB (Asia)’s Stock Connect information describes operational considerations including RMB exposure for investors whose home currency is not RMB, differences in market calendars and trading mechanisms, quotas, and possible restrictions or suspension. These affect access and execution; they do not remove the investment risk of owning the shares. Confirm current eligibility, route rules and account support with the broker before relying on the Shanghai listing.

What costs to compare before placing an order
Do not compare broker commission alone. Ask the provider for the total estimated cost for the exact listing, order size, account currency and route. Check:
- Broker commission, including any minimum charge.
- Exchange, clearing and regulatory charges.
- Any applicable stamp duty.
- Currency-conversion costs and the funding method.
Interactive Brokers publishes a Hong Kong stock pricing schedule at Hong Kong stock commissions and fees. It is an example of one provider’s schedule, not a universal rate; charges can change, and other brokers price trades differently. Use the charges shown by your own provider for the transaction you intend to make.

Risks and country-specific checks
Successful access to an order ticket does not mean the investment is suitable or likely to gain value. The information above concerns identifying listings and checking trading access, not CCB’s valuation or future performance.
- Currency: the trading and conversion currencies can affect your return when measured in your home currency. For the Stock Connect route, CCB (Asia) specifically identifies RMB exposure for non-RMB investors.
- Access and execution: market permissions, security eligibility and route operation are separate checks. Stock Connect may have quota constraints, different calendars or mechanisms, and restrictions or suspensions.
- Local rules: account-opening eligibility, taxes, reporting duties, custody arrangements and investor-protection measures depend on your country, broker entity and account. Confirm them with the broker’s relevant local legal entity and the competent national authority; Europe does not have one universal answer to these questions.
- Order handling: the issuer’s stated board lot is useful when planning an order, but the broker’s ticket and current trading rules determine what quantity and order type can actually be submitted.
After the order is filled
Save the trade confirmation and check that your holdings show the intended CCB listing, quantity, currency and transaction costs. For custody statements, dividend handling, tax documents and any reporting obligation, follow the procedures and country-specific guidance supplied by your broker and national authorities.
