To buy either, you need an intermediary that offers the relevant market or an eligible route such as Northbound Stock Connect, accepts customers in your jurisdiction, and lets your account trade that security. The listings have different board lots, account and settlement details, and market rules; first identify which one you mean, then confirm the current terms with your intermediary.
Which China Construction Bank shares can you buy?
CCB’s H-shares and A-shares are separate exchange listings of the company’s ordinary shares, not two ticker formats for the same market. The issuer identifies the Hong Kong listing as ticker 939 on the SEHK Main Board and the mainland China listing as ticker 601939 on the SSE. CCB says its H-shares were listed on 27 October 2005 and its A-shares on 25 September 2007.

| Listing | Ticker and venue | Issuer-published board lot | What to verify before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| H-shares | 939, SEHK Main Board | 1,000 shares | Whether your account supports Hong Kong trading, the costs and currency handling, and how it handles orders that are not in a full board lot. |
| A-shares | 601939, SSE | 100 shares | Whether the share is currently available through your intermediary’s route, plus its eligibility, funding, order, calendar, custody and settlement terms. |
The board-lot figures are published by CCB. They do not guarantee that every intermediary will accept an order in that size or handle odd lots in the same way. Check the current order rules shown by the provider before placing a trade.

The ticker and market identify the listing you are asking to trade. A search result for “China Construction Bank” may show one or both lines, so do not rely on the company name alone. In your intermediary’s order ticket, check that the ticker, exchange and security description match your intended listing. Access to one listing does not establish access to the other.

That distinction affects more than the digits in a search box. You must have a route that supports the venue you selected, and the account’s trading calendar, currency handling, order types and settlement terms may differ. CCB’s shareholder information is the source for its listing codes and published lots; your intermediary’s live instrument page and terms control what your particular account can actually order.
How many shares do you need to order?
CCB publishes a board lot of 1,000 H-shares and 100 A-shares. That is a useful planning reference, but it is not a quoted purchase cost: the total cash needed depends on the share price at the time of your order, the quantity accepted by your intermediary, any currency conversion and the charges that apply. There is no current price or universal fee schedule established here, so calculate the estimated total using your provider’s live quote and disclosed fees rather than relying on an old example.
Ask the provider whether the board lot is also the minimum order size for your account and what it permits for odd-lot orders. Odd-lot rules can matter if you want to buy or sell a quantity that is not a full board lot, or if a holding is left with a remainder after a transaction. Do not assume that because CCB publishes a board lot, every platform accepts smaller quantities or handles them in the same way.

How to buy CCB shares, step by step
- Choose the listing. Decide whether you want the Hong Kong H-share listing (939) or the Shanghai A-share listing (601939). Confirm the exchange and full security description in the intermediary’s platform before proceeding.
- Check that you can access that market. Ask whether the provider accepts clients resident in your jurisdiction and offers the specific exchange or route you intend to use. For Shanghai A-shares, one possible route for overseas investors is Northbound Stock Connect, but it is limited to eligible securities and subject to the provider’s customer terms. A listed security is not automatically available to every account.
- Confirm account setup and funding requirements. Review the intermediary’s identity checks, required account type, funding currency, conversion arrangements, settlement currency and any minimum order rules. For example, China Construction Bank (Asia)’s online securities service says customers must have an online banking relationship and a securities trading account. Its Northbound service specifies an RMB settlement account. Those are requirements for that provider’s service, not universal requirements for every broker or market-access route.
- Read the current trading and fee terms. Check commissions, exchange and other charges, currency conversion costs, settlement handling, supported order types, board-lot treatment, and any custody or account charges. These terms vary by provider and jurisdiction; no universal current price or fee schedule applies to every reader.
- Check live market access and eligibility. If you plan to use Stock Connect, confirm that the share is eligible through your route on the day you intend to trade and review the applicable market calendar, quotas and holding restrictions. Eligibility and program terms can change. A market being open does not necessarily mean the connected route is open or that an order can be placed.
- Enter and review the order. Select the intended market, buy side, share quantity and supported order type. If entering a limit order, check the limit price and the quantity carefully. A limit price sets the maximum price you are willing to pay on a buy order; it does not guarantee that your order will execute. Before submission, verify the ticker and exchange again.
- Check the order and account records. Confirm whether the order was accepted, partially filled, rejected or left unfilled. After a trade, review the execution details, fees, currency conversion, settlement and updated holdings in your provider’s records. Follow the settlement terms that apply to your own account.
What to check on the order ticket
Before sending an order, match the instrument name, ticker and exchange against the listing you chose. Then confirm that you are placing a buy order, that the quantity follows the provider’s lot and quantity rules, and that the order type and any price instruction are correct. A platform may require you to choose a market, order type and account before submission; CCB (Asia)’s description of its own online process is an example, not a standard interface shared by every provider.
For a limit order, the price field is an instruction rather than a promise of execution. If the market does not reach the limit price, the order may remain unfilled; it may also be partially filled or rejected under the provider’s rules. Review the status after submission instead of treating an order-entry confirmation as proof that shares were purchased. If you cancel or replace an order, check the final status and any resulting fills in the account records.
Choosing between the Hong Kong and Shanghai listings
There is no universally suitable listing for every reader. The practical choice depends first on which market your provider makes available to you and the rules and costs of that account. Do not choose solely by comparing the displayed ticker or assuming the two routes have identical trading access.
- If you are considering ticker 939: confirm Hong Kong market access, the provider’s account and settlement terms, its fees and currency handling, and how it treats orders that do not match the 1,000-share board lot CCB publishes.
- If you are considering ticker 601939: establish which access route your provider uses and whether the security is currently eligible through it. Check required funding currency and the route’s order, trading-day, quota, settlement and custody rules. CCB (Asia)’s Northbound information is an example of one provider’s terms, not a universal specification.
If the platform shows multiple CCB securities, compare the exchange and ticker—not just the issuer name—against the listing you selected. When the displayed details are unclear, do not submit the order until the intermediary confirms which security and market the ticket represents.

Rather than treating one code as a default, make the decision in this order: establish which listing you want to trade, confirm that your provider actually offers that listing to your account, and compare the terms that matter to you. These materials do not establish a universal price, fee comparison or recommendation about which listing is preferable. If your access depends on a route with changing eligibility or market calendars, verify that route shortly before placing an order.
Northbound Stock Connect: provider-specific mechanics and restrictions
Northbound Stock Connect is one route described by CCB (Asia) for overseas investors to trade eligible SSE and Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE) securities. It does not mean that every overseas investor, every account or every mainland-listed share can use the route. Eligibility, access and terms depend on the security, provider and current program rules.
CCB (Asia)’s published Northbound service terms
CCB (Asia) describes the following mechanics for its own listed Northbound service. Treat them as provider-specific details and verify that they still apply to your account before trading:
| Term | CCB (Asia)’s stated Northbound service detail | Why to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Order type | Limit orders only | Do not assume a market order is available through this service. |
| Day trading | Not permitted through the described service | Check when purchased shares can be sold under the applicable route. |
| Maximum order quantity | One million shares | This is a stated maximum for the provider’s service, not a recommended order size or a market-wide guarantee. |
| Stock settlement | Trade day | Confirm the operational meaning and account treatment with the provider. |
| Cash settlement | Trade day plus one | Allow for the cash timing stated for the service when planning available funds. |
| Settlement currency | RMB | Review funding and conversion arrangements, including any applicable costs. |
These details should not be applied to the Hong Kong listing or to another intermediary’s Stock Connect service without checking that provider’s terms. The provider notes that rules may change.

For this example service, stock settlement on trade day and cash settlement on trade day plus one are distinct timings. Do not assume that the share position and cash balance update in the same way or at the same time. Ask the intermediary how it displays unsettled cash, when funds are available for another transaction, and how it treats a pending or failed settlement. The stated mechanics describe CCB (Asia)’s service; another provider may set out different account procedures.
Stock Connect risks that can affect an order
CCB (Asia)’s Stock Connect risk disclosures describe operational and access risks in addition to ordinary share-price risk. Among them:
- Different trading calendars: Stock Connect may not operate on every day a mainland market is open. Check the route calendar rather than assuming that the underlying exchange’s opening hours determine availability.
- Eligibility changes: a security may become ineligible or be recalled from the eligible list. The provider’s disclosure says a recalled security may be restricted to sales through the channel; do not assume you can continue buying it there.
- Quota and order constraints: quotas or other program restrictions can affect whether purchases are accepted. A rejection may reflect route conditions rather than an error in the ticker you entered.
- Foreign holding limits: restrictions on foreign shareholding can limit purchases or require reductions. The disclosure identifies possible restrictions; it does not predict that a particular limit will apply to your order.
- Currency risk: changes in exchange rates can affect the value of an investment when measured in a different currency, apart from movements in the share price. Review the relevant account’s conversion and settlement terms.
This list is not a complete inventory of investment risks, and it is not a prediction that any specific restriction will affect a given reader. Consult the disclosure and current terms applying to your route.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
These restrictions can have practical consequences even when you have already opened an account. A route may be closed on a day the underlying exchange trades, a purchase may not pass an applicable quota or holding check, or a recalled share may be sell-only through that channel. Check the live availability notice and the provider’s explanation of any rejection. Do not assume that repeating an order, changing its size or switching to another route is appropriate without first understanding the rule that blocked it.
How to avoid common order mistakes
Confusing ticker 939 with ticker 601939
These codes refer to different CCB listings and venues. Before buying, compare the ticker and market displayed in the order ticket with the one you chose: 939 for Hong Kong H-shares or 601939 for Shanghai A-shares. If the platform’s description does not make the venue clear, ask the provider to identify the security before submitting.
Assuming a board lot is a universal minimum
CCB publishes lots of 1,000 H-shares and 100 A-shares. Your intermediary controls the order interface and may have separate rules for full lots, odd lots or minimum quantities. Check those rules directly instead of inferring what the platform will accept from the issuer’s board-lot figure.
Assuming an eligible market route is always available
For Stock Connect, security eligibility, trading days, quotas and other restrictions can affect access. If an order is unavailable or rejected, check the provider’s live status and explanation before trying another order size or assuming the share itself has been delisted.
Using an order type the route does not support
CCB (Asia) states that its Northbound service accepts only limit orders. If your provider’s ticket offers different order types, rely on the rules for your account and route. A limit order may remain unfilled if the market does not reach the specified price; submitting it is not the same as completing a purchase.

Overlooking cash timing and currency
The described CCB (Asia) service uses RMB settlement and distinguishes trade-day stock settlement from cash settlement on trade day plus one. Other providers may specify different arrangements. Check the actual account terms so you know which currency is required and when cash is available or debited.
Assuming a provider example is a universal rule
CCB (Asia)’s online banking relationship requirement, RMB settlement account requirement, limit-order-only rule, no-day-trading rule and stated maximum order quantity relate to its own described services. They are useful prompts for questions to ask, not a checklist of rules every intermediary must follow. Confirm the exact terms for your country, account and intended route.

What to verify before funding an account
- The provider accepts customers in your country or region.
- The account can trade the intended CCB listing—not merely securities in general.
- For a mainland route, the intended security is currently eligible and the route is open for trading.
- The required account type, identity documents and funding currency are clear.
- Commissions, exchange charges, currency-conversion costs and any other applicable fees are disclosed.
- Board-lot, odd-lot, minimum-quantity and maximum-order rules are understood.
- Supported order types, market calendars, settlement timing and custody terms are clear.
- You understand how the provider handles a rejected, partially filled, cancelled or unfilled order.
These are provider- and jurisdiction-dependent details. The fact that a brokerage advertises international or China-market access does not establish that CCB’s particular listing is available to your account.
It can be useful to separate the questions into three checks. First, is the provider able to onboard a customer in your location? Second, does that account have access to the precise listing or Stock Connect route? Third, what conditions apply to a trade after access is enabled, including order size, currency, fees and settlement? A “yes” to general international-market access does not answer the second or third question.
For provider comparisons, use the same checklist for each candidate: jurisdiction acceptance, access to 939 or 601939 through the intended route, account and funding requirements, order and lot rules, disclosed charges, calendar and settlement treatment, and the way the provider reports execution and holdings. No specific broker, broker ranking or affiliate program is established here. A neutral comparison of actual account terms is more useful than choosing a provider based only on a broad claim of China-market access.
What this guide does—and does not—establish
The issuer’s “General Shareholder Information” establishes the two listing codes, venues, listing dates and board-lot sizes stated above. CCB (Asia)’s “Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect” and “Risk Disclosure for Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect” pages establish details of that institution’s own account and Northbound service, as well as risks it identifies for Stock Connect. Its “Frequently Asked Questions: Securities Trading” page gives an example of that provider’s online account requirement. These materials do not establish a universal broker, a current share price, a fee schedule for every provider, access in every country, or whether CCB stock is suitable for a particular investor.
This is an explanation of how to identify and access the listings, not a recommendation to buy either one or an assessment of CCB’s valuation, financial condition or prospects. For company-specific shareholder questions, use CCB’s official investor-relations channels; for account access, execution, fees and settlement, the relevant intermediary is the source for the terms governing your trade.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is China Construction Bank’s stock ticker?
CCB’s Hong Kong H-shares trade on the SEHK Main Board as 939. Its Shanghai A-shares trade on the SSE as 601939. Check both the ticker and exchange shown in your order ticket; the issuer name alone may not distinguish the listings.
Can an overseas investor buy CCB shares?
Access depends on the investor’s jurisdiction, account and intermediary. CCB (Asia) describes Northbound Stock Connect as a route for overseas investors to trade eligible SSE and SZSE securities, but that does not make every security or account eligible. Confirm that your provider accepts customers where you live and supports the specific listing or route.
Best Value
What is the minimum number of CCB shares I can buy?
CCB publishes board lots of 1,000 H-shares and 100 A-shares. Your intermediary may have additional minimum-quantity or odd-lot rules, so check its order terms. The cash required also depends on the live share price, charges and any currency conversion.
Does CCB (Asia)’s Stock Connect service accept market orders?
CCB (Asia) states that its described Northbound service accepts limit orders only. That is a provider-specific term; check the order types supported by the intermediary and route you intend to use. A limit order can remain unfilled if the market does not reach your price.
When do shares and cash settle through CCB (Asia)’s Northbound service?
CCB (Asia) states that stock settlement is on trade day, cash settlement is on trade day plus one, and settlement is in RMB for its described service. Confirm how those timings apply to your account and do not assume another provider follows the same arrangement.

Eligibility can change, and CCB (Asia)’s risk disclosure says a recalled eligible security may be restricted to sales through the channel. Trading calendars, quotas and foreign holding limits can also affect orders. Check the live eligibility status and your provider’s current terms before trading.
Are there universal fees or a current share price in this guide?
No. Fees, currency conversion costs and order terms depend on the intermediary, account and jurisdiction, while the share price changes over time. Use your provider’s current quote and fee schedule to estimate the total cost before submitting an order.
The Bottom Line
To buy China Construction Bank stock, first distinguish Hong Kong ticker 939 from Shanghai ticker 601939, then confirm that an intermediary serving your jurisdiction offers your chosen listing or eligible route. CCB publishes board lots of 1,000 H-shares and 100 A-shares, but your provider’s live eligibility, order, fee, currency and settlement terms determine what your account can actually trade. Verify those details before placing an order; this procedural guide is not a recommendation to buy.
