Its H-shares trade on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under ticker 939 (often entered as 00939) in Hong Kong dollars (HKD). Its A-shares trade on the Shanghai Stock Exchange under ticker 601939 in renminbi (RMB). To buy either class, you need a brokerage account with access to the relevant market. Hong Kong and overseas investors may reach eligible Shanghai A-shares through northbound Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect, but access depends on your investor status, account, the security and the broker.
This is an access and mechanics guide, not a recommendation to buy CCB. No live share price, personal tax result or individual eligibility determination is established here. Check current broker terms, exchange rules and professional advice for your circumstances before placing an order.

CCB’s two listed share classes
The first decision is which listing you are trying to trade. The same company appears in two ordinary-share markets, with different codes, currencies, lot sizes and access rules.

| Share class | Exchange | Broker search code | Trading currency | CCB-stated board lot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H-shares | Hong Kong Stock Exchange | 939 or 00939 | HKD | 1,000 shares |
| A-shares | Shanghai Stock Exchange | 601939 | RMB | 100 shares |
CCB’s official shareholder FAQ lists the symbols as “939” and “601939.” Many trading interfaces add a leading zero to the Hong Kong code, so searching for 00939 can also return the H-share listing. The company says its H-shares were listed in Hong Kong on 27 October 2005 and its A-shares in Shanghai on 25 September 2007. The 4 June 2026 shareholder circular defines H-shares as Hong Kong-listed and HKD-traded, and A-shares as Shanghai-listed and RMB-traded. See CCB’s General Shareholder Information FAQ and the 4 June 2026 shareholder circular.

What the ticker does—and does not—tell you
A ticker identifies a listing, not a guaranteed price relationship, fee level or access route. Do not assume that buying 939 gives you the same operational experience as buying 601939. The listings use different currencies and market infrastructure, and your broker may support one while not supporting the other.
Board lots are not the same as a minimum economic investment
CCB states: “There are (1,000) shares in one block H-shares and (100) shares in one block A-shares of CCB.” That is the issuer’s stated board-lot information. Your broker may accept odd-lot orders, fractional quantities or only board-lot quantities, depending on its order system and the exchange service it provides. Confirm the permitted quantity before calculating how much cash you need.
How to buy the Hong Kong-listed H-shares
For most readers, the H-share route is a conventional Hong Kong-market brokerage transaction. You still need to check residence restrictions, account documentation, funding and the broker’s current market coverage.
- Open or use an account that supports Hong Kong-listed shares. Ask whether the account can trade Hong Kong equities, whether your country of residence is accepted and whether any suitability or identity checks apply.
- Fund the account in the supported currency. H-shares trade in HKD. If you deposit another currency, the broker may convert it, apply an FX spread or require you to exchange funds yourself. The exact process and rates are broker-specific and are not stated in CCB’s issuer materials.
- Search by exchange and code. Use “Hong Kong Stock Exchange” plus 939 or 00939. Verify that the company name is China Construction Bank Corporation and that the instrument is an ordinary H-share, not a similarly named security, derivative or fund.
- Review the order ticket. Check the displayed currency, quoted quantity, board-lot requirement, order type, validity period, market-hours notice and cancellation rules. If the ticket rejects a quantity such as 1,001 shares, try the broker’s supported odd-lot process or a full board lot rather than repeatedly submitting an invalid order.
- Submit only after checking all charges. The confirmation screen should show the estimated trade value and any commission, exchange charge, levy, stamp duty, custody fee or FX cost that the broker applies. Do not treat a quoted share price as your all-in cost.
- Save the contract note and holding record. Keep the execution price, currency, fees, trade date, settlement information and account statement. These records are useful for portfolio monitoring and any tax reporting that applies to you.
How Hong Kong or overseas investors may reach A-shares
A-shares trade in Shanghai in RMB. A Hong Kong or foreign investor may be able to access eligible Shanghai-listed securities through northbound Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect, provided the investor, account, security and broker satisfy the applicable requirements. The route is not automatic for every investor or every Shanghai stock.

- Ask whether your broker offers northbound Stock Connect. Confirm that the service covers Shanghai-listed A-shares and that it is available to your residence, account type and legal entity. A broker offering Hong Kong trading does not necessarily offer Stock Connect.
- Check CCB’s security eligibility at the time of the order. The eligible list and operating rules can change. Your broker should identify whether Shanghai code 601939 is currently tradable through its northbound service.
- Complete the required account and risk disclosures. The provider may require additional agreements, risk acknowledgements, identity checks, investor classifications or minimum account capabilities. The exact requirements are provider-specific.
- Arrange RMB funding or conversion. The share is quoted and settled in RMB. Ask whether the broker accepts RMB cash, converts HKD or another currency automatically, and how the FX rate and conversion fee are calculated.
- Place the order using the broker’s Stock Connect ticket. The interface may show different order types, trading windows, quantity rules and cancellation limitations from the Hong Kong market. Follow the ticket’s current instructions rather than assuming that an H-share order can be copied directly.
- Understand the holding structure before execution. Stock Connect involves nominee and beneficial-ownership arrangements. Ask how the broker records your interest, delivers company announcements, processes dividends and other corporate actions, and handles transfers or restrictions.
HSBC’s China A-Shares information describes northbound trading, nominee arrangements and operational risks. Its page contains historical quota information dated May 2018; do not use that old amount as a current limit. Verify today’s quotas, eligibility and restrictions with current official rules and your broker.
What to check before opening or funding an account
Market access
- Does the provider support the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, northbound Shanghai Stock Connect, or both?
- Is the service available in your jurisdiction and for your investor category?
- Can the account hold HKD, RMB and any other currency you intend to use?
- Does the provider support ordinary shares rather than only derivatives or contracts for difference?
Identity, ownership and account structure
- What identification, address evidence, tax forms and suitability information are required?
- Are the shares held directly in your name, through a custodian or through a Stock Connect nominee structure?
- How will you receive shareholder notices, dividend information and corporate-action elections?
- Are there transfer, selling, repatriation or ownership-threshold restrictions?
Order handling
- Is the minimum order one full board lot, and are odd lots accepted?
- Which order types are available, and can orders be amended or cancelled?
- What market hours and holiday calendar apply?
- How does the broker display rejected orders, partial fills and unexecuted balances?
Currency, settlement and the true cost of a purchase
H-shares are traded in HKD and A-shares in RMB. That difference affects the cash you need, the currency conversion step and the value of your holding when measured in your home currency. A movement in HKD or RMB against your home currency can change your result even if the share price in its local market does not move.
| Cost or operational item | H-share route | A-share Stock Connect route |
|---|---|---|
| Trading currency | HKD | RMB |
| Broker commission | Not stated in CCB’s issuer sources; verify the broker’s current schedule. | Not stated in CCB’s issuer sources; verify the broker’s current schedule. |
| Exchange, regulatory or transaction charges | Not stated in CCB’s issuer sources; ask for an itemized estimate. | Not stated in CCB’s issuer sources; ask for an itemized estimate. |
| FX conversion | Applies if your funding currency is not HKD; rate and spread are broker-specific. | Applies if your funding currency is not RMB; rate and spread are broker-specific. |
| Custody and settlement | Confirm the broker and custodian arrangement. | Confirm nominee/beneficial-ownership, settlement and custody arrangements. |
| Taxes and duties | Confirm the rules that apply to your residence and transaction. | Confirm the rules that apply to your residence and transaction. |
Do not infer a lower-cost route from the share code or local price. The relevant comparison is the complete cost for your account: commission, market charges, levies, duties or taxes, FX conversion, custody, settlement and any account fee. CCB (Asia)’s securities-trading FAQ illustrates how one provider describes securities access and an RMB settlement account, but it is an example of provider-specific onboarding, not a universal requirement.

CCB’s stated board lots are 1,000 H-shares and 100 A-shares. A board lot is an exchange trading unit, not a promise that every broker will accept only that unit. Some providers route odd lots separately; others may allow you to sell an odd-lot remainder but not buy one through the standard ticket.

Before entering quantity
- Confirm whether the quantity field means shares or board lots. Entering “1” can mean one share or 1,000 shares depending on the interface.
- Check whether the order must be a multiple of 1,000 for 939 or 100 for 601939.
- Ask how partial fills and odd-lot balances appear in statements.
- Leave enough cash for charges and FX movement rather than funding exactly the displayed share value.
Comparing the two routes without declaring a winner
| Decision factor | H-shares: 939/00939 | A-shares: 601939 |
|---|---|---|
| Where it trades | Hong Kong Stock Exchange | Shanghai Stock Exchange |
| Currency | HKD | RMB |
| Stated CCB board lot | 1,000 shares | 100 shares |
| Primary access question | Does your account support Hong Kong-listed equities? | Does your broker provide northbound Stock Connect, and is 601939 eligible for your account? |
| Funding question | Can you fund or convert to HKD efficiently? | Can you fund or convert to RMB under the broker’s process? |
| Operational focus | Hong Kong order handling, custody, fees and shareholder services | Nominee/beneficial ownership, Stock Connect restrictions, corporate actions, settlement and announcements |
| Price relationship | Not established by the cited sources; do not assume identical prices or perfect interchangeability. | |
The appropriate route depends on your eligibility, account, currency needs, costs and intended holding arrangements. The available facts do not establish that one listing is universally better or cheaper.
Holding records, dividends and corporate actions
Buying through a broker is only the beginning of the ownership process. Before trading, find out how the provider handles dividends, rights issues, share conversions, voting materials, notices and withholding. The answer can differ between a Hong Kong-held position and a Stock Connect position.
For existing registered holders who need a lost certificate, an ownership-record change or a transfer service, CCB identifies Computershare Hong Kong Investor Services Ltd. as its Hong Kong share registrar in the shareholder FAQ. Registrar services are for maintaining an existing holding record; they are not a substitute for a brokerage account when purchasing listed shares.
For Stock Connect positions, ask specifically how beneficial ownership is recorded, whether you can vote and how instructions must be submitted, and how quickly announcements reach you. The broker’s current terms and official market rules control these details.

Tax and regulatory checks
No single tax answer applies to every reader. Your result can depend on residence, account type, transaction type, dividend treatment, treaty status and the rules in the markets involved. The cited sources do not provide individualized tax advice. Before trading, ask a qualified adviser or consult the relevant tax authority about capital gains, dividends, withholding, reporting and currency conversion.
Regulatory access is similarly personal. A broker may restrict service by country, investor classification, sanctions screening, product type or account structure. Passing an online application does not prove that a particular CCB security is eligible for your account on the day you place an order.
Common failure points and fixes
The ticker search returns nothing
Search by exchange and code rather than the bank’s name. Try Hong Kong 939 and 00939 separately, then verify the exchange, currency and ordinary-share description. For Shanghai, search 601939 and confirm that the order ticket identifies the Shanghai listing.
The order is rejected for quantity
Check whether you entered shares or lots and whether the quantity is a multiple of the stated board lot. Ask the broker whether odd-lot trading is available and whether an odd-lot order must use a separate ticket.

The account shows the market but not the security
Market access does not guarantee security eligibility. Ask whether 601939 is currently included in the broker’s northbound Stock Connect universe and whether your account has completed the required agreements.
The cash balance is insufficient after conversion
Recheck the settlement currency and leave room for FX spread, commission and market charges. A cash balance in your home currency may not be treated as available RMB or HKD until conversion is completed.
You cannot cancel or amend the order
Stock Connect and exchange-specific order rules can limit cancellation or amendment. Read the broker’s current order-handling notice and contact support before sending a replacement order, so you do not accidentally create duplicate exposure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou cannot find shareholder information after execution
Ask whether the position is held through a nominee or custodian and where corporate-action notices are posted. Keep the contract note and account statement; the issuer’s registrar may not be the party that maintains your day-to-day brokerage record.
A pre-trade checklist
- Write down the intended listing: Hong Kong 939/00939 or Shanghai 601939.
- Confirm the exchange, currency and ordinary-share instrument on the order screen.
- Verify that your residence and account type are eligible for the market.
- For A-shares, confirm current northbound Stock Connect and security eligibility.
- Check the board lot: 1,000 H-shares or 100 A-shares, subject to the broker’s current handling.
- Obtain an itemized fee estimate, including commission, market charges, FX, custody, settlement and applicable duties or taxes.
- Understand funding, settlement date, order validity, cancellation and partial-fill rules.
- Read how dividends, announcements, voting and other corporate actions are delivered.
- Save the contract note and verify the filled quantity and currency after execution.
- Keep records and obtain personal tax or legal advice where required.
Company context and dated market-capitalization figure
CCB’s investor-relations material reports approximately US$265,545 million in market capitalization at the end of 2025. That is a dated company-reported figure, not a live quote, current market capitalization or valuation conclusion. You can find the issuer’s investor-relations page at https://eu.ccb.com/eng/investor/index.shtml. A current market value changes with share prices, exchange rates and the date of measurement.
Bottom line
To buy China Construction Bank stock, identify the listing first: Hong Kong H-shares use 939/00939 and HKD, while Shanghai A-shares use 601939 and RMB. Use a broker that supports the chosen market, verify your eligibility and the security’s availability, check board-lot and order rules, and price the full currency, trading, custody, settlement and tax costs before submitting an order. Stock Connect can provide a route to eligible A-shares for some Hong Kong and overseas investors, but neither access nor terms are universal.
