How to Buy China Construction Bank Shares Through a Broker

To buy China Construction Bank Corporation (CCB) shares, use a broker that supports the listing you want: Hong Kong H-shares (code 939 or 00939) or Shanghai A-shares (code 601939). These are separate exchange listings with different access, order and settlement rules. Overseas investors may be able to buy eligible Shanghai A-shares through Northbound Stock Connect, but access depends on the security, broker and investor eligibility. Confirm those details before funding an account or placing an order.

Which China Construction Bank shares can you buy?

CCB has two ordinary-share listings. The codes refer to different order routes, so check the exchange and share class shown by your broker rather than choosing a result by company name alone. CCB’s shareholder information lists the trading codes and standard board lots; its 2025 half-year report also identifies the H-share code as 00939 and the A-share code as 601939.

How to buy CCB shares through a broker

  1. Choose a listing. Decide whether you want Hong Kong H-shares or Shanghai A-shares. The route affects market access, currency, order rules and settlement.
  2. Confirm broker and investor eligibility. For H-shares, check that Hong Kong trading is enabled. For A-shares, ask whether the broker offers Northbound Shanghai Stock Connect, whether clients in your jurisdiction can use it, and whether CCB 601939 is currently eligible. Stock Connect covers selected securities, not every Shanghai listing.
  3. Check account and funding requirements. Requirements vary by provider and location. For example, CCB (Asia)’s Northbound service requires customers to maintain a securities cash account and an RMB settlement account; that is a provider-specific condition, not a universal rule.
  4. Review order size and order types. CCB reports standard lots of 1,000 H-shares and 100 A-shares. CCB (Asia)’s service information specifies 100-share Northbound buy lots, limit orders only, no day trading, and cash settlement in RMB on trade day plus one. Check your own broker’s current rules before entering a quantity.
  5. Calculate the full cost and currency exposure. Review commission, exchange and regulatory charges, custody or account fees, and any currency-conversion spread. Shanghai A-shares are RMB-denominated; if your funds or spending currency differs, exchange-rate movements can affect your return. The fees for your particular broker are not established by the sources here.
  6. Place and monitor the order. Search the issuer name or code, verify the exchange and share class, select a supported order type and quantity, and review the estimated total before submitting. Then check whether the order is pending, partially filled, filled or rejected. Sending an instruction does not guarantee an exchange execution.

What to compare when choosing a broker

Availability and terms depend on your country, account type and the broker’s current arrangements. Compare these items before opening or funding an account:

  • Hong Kong market access and/or Shanghai Northbound Stock Connect access.
  • Whether residents of your jurisdiction can open the relevant account and trade the security.
  • Account-opening, funding and RMB settlement requirements.
  • Supported order types, lot-size handling, trading hours, cancellation rules and execution handling.
  • Commission, exchange and regulatory charges, custody fees, account fees and currency-conversion costs.
  • Availability of statements, tax documents and corporate-action support.

Stock Connect uses eligible-security lists and daily quotas. Eligibility or quota conditions can restrict trading, so verify current HKEX and broker information rather than assuming access will remain available on every trading day. HKEX’s Stock Connect overview describes the programme’s scope and quota framework.

Risks and rules to understand

CCB (Asia)’s Northbound trading risk disclosure says: “The prices of securities fluctuate, sometimes dramatically. The price of a security may move up or down, and may become valueless.” The bank also warns that investors whose base currency is not RMB face currency risk, and that trading may be restricted or suspended if quota or eligibility conditions change. These are general service disclosures, not a personal assessment of whether CCB shares suit you. Read CCB (Asia)’s Stock Connect service and risk information.

Stock Connect terms, eligible lists, quotas, settlement arrangements and broker charges can change. Check the current materials from HKEX and your chosen provider before trading.
