To buy ADA, use a purchase method available in your country, then withdraw it to a Cardano wallet you control if you want self-custody. Before buying, choose and set up the wallet, secure its recovery phrase offline, and confirm the exchange supports withdrawals over the Cardano network. An exchange account is custodial while the exchange holds your keys; a self-custody wallet puts you in charge of them.
What you need to know before buying ADA
ADA is recorded on the Cardano blockchain, not inside a wallet app, exchange account, or hardware device. A wallet manages the cryptographic keys used to receive and authorize transactions. As Cardano puts it, “Your coins live on the Cardano blockchain.” Cardano’s wallet guide explains the distinction.

A receiving address and a recovery phrase serve different purposes. You can share your address with someone who needs to send you ADA; your recovery phrase controls access to a non-custodial wallet and must remain private. Cardano describes an address as public, “like an account number,” in its beginner guide.

Choose a wallet before you buy
Set up the wallet first so you have a receiving address ready if you plan to withdraw ADA from an exchange. Compare custody, convenience, device support, features such as delegation, and how the wallet connects to Cardano. No wallet type is risk-free or best for every user.

- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Custodial or self-custody
- Custodial: A provider, often an exchange, holds the keys. You depend on that provider to access or withdraw the ADA.
- Self-custody: You control the keys and are responsible for protecting the wallet’s recovery phrase. If the phrase is lost or exposed, the provider cannot simply reset your access.
Hot or cold
A hot wallet is connected to the internet and is convenient for frequent transactions. A cold wallet keeps signing keys offline and may suit ADA you access less often. Cardano suggests matching the choice to how often you use the funds and the amount you hold; neither approach eliminates risk. Read Cardano’s wallet overview for its explanation of wallet types.
Light or full-node
Light wallets are quicker to install and connect to the blockchain through remote services. Full-node wallets download and validate a copy of the chain, which takes more time and storage. Decide whether easier setup or more independent verification better suits your needs.

When to consider a hardware wallet
Cardano documentation lists Trezor Model T, Ledger Nano S Plus, and Ledger Nano X as hardware-wallet examples for ADA, and names Ledger, Trezor, and Keystone as supported brands. Compatibility depends on the device model and wallet software integration, so check current Cardano support before buying and use a source the manufacturer identifies as authentic. Cardano’s wallet documentation lists the examples.

A hardware wallet keeps signing keys off an internet-connected device, but it does not replace a recovery backup or careful review of transactions before signing. Losing or damaging the device is manageable only if you still have a secure recovery method; someone who obtains your recovery phrase may be able to access the funds regardless of the device’s spending password.

- Seedless by design, nothing to steal: Your private key is generated inside the EAL6+ chip and never leaves it. No seed phrase is shown or typed at setup, so a tampered device, keylogger, or phishing site has nothing to capture. 9+ years, millions of card.

- Backup without a seed phrase: Your wallet is copied to 2 backup cards with end-to-end encryption, so there are no words on paper to lose or leak. Keep them in separate places; if one card is lost, the others restore full access. Optional seed phrase for advanced users.
- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.

How to buy ADA and move it to your wallet
- Choose a purchase route available where you live. Centralized exchanges are a common option. Some wallets also offer purchases by card, bank transfer, or Apple Pay, but methods vary by location. Cardano’s ADA acquisition guide describes common routes, and its exchange directory says listings are not endorsements.
- Compare the provider’s terms. Check fees, custody arrangements, withdrawal availability, and which transfer network the provider supports. Do not assume a provider or payment method is available in every country.
- Set up your chosen wallet and secure its recovery phrase. Follow the wallet’s own setup instructions and confirm that it supports ADA before transferring funds.
- Copy the wallet’s receiving address. Use the address shown in the wallet and verify it carefully before entering it in the exchange withdrawal form. An address is intended to be shared for receiving funds; the recovery phrase is not.
- Check the exchange’s withdrawal instructions and network selection. Exchange screens and supported networks can differ. Confirm that the withdrawal is for Cardano and that the destination address is correct before approving it.
- Consider a small test transfer. If the exchange permits it, send a small amount first and wait for it to appear in your wallet before withdrawing the rest. Follow the exchange’s current process rather than relying on a universal set of screen labels.
- Confirm receipt in your wallet. Once the transfer arrives, check the balance and transaction details before making any further transfer.
While ADA remains in an exchange account, the exchange controls the keys. Withdrawing to a self-custody wallet changes who controls access, but also makes you responsible for keeping the recovery phrase safe. Cardano’s acquisition guide covers exchanges and wallet purchase options.
Protect your recovery phrase and avoid scams
The recovery phrase is the master backup for a non-custodial wallet. Phrase length depends on the wallet: Cardano’s glossary describes 15- or 24-word phrases as typical, while 12- and 27-word cases also exist. Use the phrase length and recovery steps specified by your wallet rather than assuming all wallets work alike. See Cardano’s glossary.

- Write the phrase on paper or stamp it into metal, then keep it offline in a secure place. Consider whether you need more than one protected backup.
- Do not photograph it, save it in a cloud-synced note, type it into a website, or send it in a message.
- Never disclose it to someone claiming to be support, a moderator, or an exchange representative. Legitimate help should not require your recovery words or private keys.
- Check wallet URLs carefully and avoid unsolicited links. Cardano warns about phishing sites and apps, fake support contacts, giveaways that ask for money first, and investment offers promising guaranteed high returns. Read its security guidance.
A metal backup can help protect words from some physical damage, but it does not keep them secret if another person can read the plate. If someone obtains your phrase, a device password cannot protect the funds from them; stolen ADA may not be recoverable.

You do not need to stake ADA to buy or hold it. If you later delegate to a stake pool, Cardano’s getting-started guide says the ADA stays in your wallet and remains spendable; delegation assigns stake rights rather than transferring the coins to the pool operator. That guide also describes no minimum ADA amount to delegate, no slashing risk, and no lock period under its staking design. Check current protocol details before relying on staking terms or considering any potential rewards. Cardano’s guide to getting started explains delegation.
